I think Slayer kicks some ass in that department.. they never went mainstream for sure.. but they did change quite a bit with God Hates Us All. Pantera, also... although the band is done now.. they never went mainstream or sold-out they just shredded those fuckin instruments!

It's hard to say really.
Some metal bands simply moved on and changed their style. Honestly I can't really tell who "Sells out" compared to bands that simply evolve.
And rock, don't listen to anyone who play s on the radio....that solves that portion of the question.

*sigh* Define selling-out please? Actually don't. Just forget it. I'm sick of people throwing that term around. Slayer ARE mainstream, they're the biggest fucking thrash band on the planet. Just about everyone has heard of them, even those not into the genre. Same with Pantera, you know how many metal-fans hearts were broken when Dimebag died? A LOT. Just because something is mainstream doesn't mean it's not good, as we can see by those two examples.

However OT best rock band currently not in the mainstream.... I'd go with... Rolo Tomassi, although they're steadily approaching it.

Trivium or Children of Bodom. I would actually say In Flames since I don't really think they sold out, but almost everyone I've met claims they have.

What is "selling out" when you already sell millions of records? Why do people act like their favourite bands selling lots of records is a bad thing?

Also what is "going mainstream" when you're already on a major label and already have millions of fans? Slayer and Pantera are two of the biggest metal bands in the world. They are about as "mainstream" as metal gets.
