it just seems like a complete waste of resources. They're essentially keeping the site going for spambots.
My only guess is that, given the shitstorm over merging the two sites, they're now too scared to shut that site down completely.

Shhh, we don't talk about the Dark Limbo Brovengers.

It's scary over there...
They're the same as us but evil. Plus they all have goatees.

I have to agree.

Also, the recent forum layout change has completely broken the look of the warcry forums. And it doesn't look like anyone cares enough to fix it.
Exactly. The site is effectively abandoned so it seems silly to waste server space just for spambots. It could be put to better use.

I found this website called warcry. I have some questions:
1. why is no one on it
2. why am I logged in to this website?
God the Warcry Network... discovered it back in 2008, from someone that I used to know... it's basically another, older, dead arm of Thermis group...

It's a really sad place now, only inhabited by spam bots and a very small community with a short life expectancy... There's a lot of bad blood between older members of that site and the escapist for some reason... usually we get blamed for why the site is dead now...

In a lot of ways it's the basement of the escapist... a forgotten place only home to the things rarely touched by anyone living in the settlement above it...

It's really sad actually...

It looks like now it's forever lost in time on the eve of May 2011...

It's always the goatee, isn't it?
How else are you supposed to tell evil people apart?

...

The aura of evil which radiates from them as they suck the very living souls of the nearby happy living children which then turns them into slave-boys and girls from the depths of the Nether from which rises a horrible beast bent on destroying all that is good in the world.

Also the goatee.

Did some digging

Quote by mrcheese.

I actually found out about warcry last year, abit after the lulsec thing when the scapist was horribly horribly slow and groups wouldnt load.

Never knew the history behind it though.

also need to highlight this
most of the warcry regulars went there once and deemed it pseudo-intellectuals and children arguing over meaningless drivel
Good to see that the escapist never changed.
Woah, I feel bad for the guy.

Talk about destroying a website. The guys on the escapist seemed to have fucked up pretty bad. Destroy a website and drive away it's users. No wonder there are only about 2 users from 2003 and around that these days.
Actually, no.

Warcry used to be a collection of themed forums dedicated to specific MMOs. It was actually part of a business we ran for developers - we ran their communities for them. Then developers figured out they could do that themselves, and Warcry began to dwindle in activity and popularity. Less and less new content was posted as more and more fans and developers began to run their own sites for games.

As Warcry was winding down, The Escapist was spinning up with a completely different purpose and audience in mind. The original version of The Escapist was rather different from what you see now - no videos, no news, no forums, no reviews, just feature articles assembled into a magazine-style PDF. It was wonderfully pretentious wankery, but at that time, nobody was writing about games that way. We got mocked for it a lot. Now, everyone does it. Amusing, that.

The community left Warcry in droves, but there were a few stalwart folks who hung on, and didn't want to just switch off the lights and tell them to bugger off, so we attempted to integrate the two communities a few years back. The problem was, while The Escapist forums had always been very heavily moderated, the Warcry forums never were, and so we were essentially asking people to play by rules they'd never agreed to follow. That was our mistake. They, in return, resented that the Escapist community was on "their turf" at all, and some reacted rather childishly, coming to these forums and freaking out, attacking users, etc. Some of us here thought merging the two communities was a bad idea from the start, and we were proven correct. Many aspects of communication were just plain mishandled. But we didn't "destroy" a website. It died a natural death. It served a very specific purpose that simply ceased to exist, and the Escapist was just too different for many Warcry users to embrace. Some did, and are now active members here, but many just didn't care for this content or this community. The rules were too strict, the conversation "too intellectual." Not much we could do about that.

Truly THIS is the hero the escapist deserves!
But who will be the hero we need?
@thegoddamnbatman: Because if there ever was a hero he would have that name

But you kept the lights on anyway despite the fact that the site is dead and only used by about 4 users from the escapist.

Why bother integrating them if you are going to pay to keep the site running after all this time?
We talked about shutting it down, but there was no harm in letting it exist so that the handful of people who were left still had a place to go. The cost to maintain it is minimal, so we wouldn't really gain anything by switching off the lights. We could pull the plug, simply haven't yet. And the attempt at integration happened a few years ago, in an attempt to revitalize the community.

We don't have an overly compelling reason to devote resources to something that's barely used, though the proliferation of bots is news to me.

The bots seem to have completely taken over in some areas, there are indexes [http://www.warcry.com/forums/index/79-WarCry-Discussion] that are almost entirely bots. There seems to be very few legitimate users left and some of them are actually posting spam in other bots' threads.

Last I checked the mods were people from the community. They aren't "resources".
People count as resources, even when they're volunteers. And several of the remaining members of the community had, last I knew, moderator status, which means they could police the forum as needed. Those folks may have since left.
