it's not racist to not be attracted to a race of person any more than it's bigoted to not be attracted to fat people or short people if you think about it

My big question is what is Japans obsession with a woman who can cook? Seriously, every anime I've seen involves a woman cooking a boxed lunch for her crush. Persona 3 built an entire social link around learning how to cook (snore). Persona 4 used it as a recurring joke. Most countries dropped the whole "the way to a mans heart is through his stomach" bit in the 50's. It's not even about gender stereotypes, I just think it's weird.

I am not Indian, but I look of Middle-eastern decent due to a phenotype resulting from un-pure African and Asian like decent. Aside from that, I think the appeal is due to media depicting white women in general. People of color(sorry if that offends any one) tend not to be popularized as much outside their own regions. Maybe some cultures historically value white phenotypes, since white can correlate with cleanliness or purity, while darker skin correlates with the working class.

Eh, I think racism is a bit too strong a word for what this topic is really about, it fits more with positive discrimination of 'x' race, then again I have an overarching principle to use discrimination instead of all those ism's the kids are using nowadays.

I'll go along with the whole 'exotic' thing, due to cultural differences on what is seen as 'acceptable' and 'taboo' can very easily be led into the whole fantasizing of women or men from a different culture. Especially since none of the actual cultural differences matter in the slightest and it more comes to down to stereo-types and presumption based on who knows what.

My mum told me (who is Filipino) that it's because having light skin, for men and women, is seen as looking rich or healthy in those parts of the world.
As a Filipino, our obsession with whiteness is really embarrassing. It seems so pathetic, and screams colonial mentality. Or maybe its because I was born a lot whiter than a lot of my countrymen, Which is funny, because I'd rather be dark.
Trust me, I am from the Caribbean and we still have an unusual love for whites and mulattos. Even where I am currently living , girls ,for example, would rather be with a Spanish, European or Indian dudes because they want "pretty hair or light skin" babies. I even experienced this because, people praised me for having "pretty hair" due to my mixed heritage and praised my sister for being "clear skinned" which made me hated myself for being dark and made my sister to be unhappy with her afro-centric hair . I mean, even calling someone "dark" or calling their hair "hard" are considered to be negative traits or insults. I don't know what to think about this other than we will never progress with this "colonial times" mentality.

As I explained earlier, stereotypes does not mean all, just that the mean has been shifted compared to the "control" group.

Spent a good bit of time in India and asked a similar question after seeing my female friends i was travelling with get some serious harassment. Had to be seen to be believed, flashing of genitals and crowds swarming them on the beach. I know sounds like hyperbole but wasn't i assure you.

Anyway, reason i got from an Indian woman who sold jewellery on the beach is that most native Indians experience with white women is through pornography, so they get the idea that white women are more adventurous and have sex like porn stars do.

Not sure how accurate a statement it was but she believed it.
Ouch. I remember that. I was 6 when we travelled through India (by 'we' I mean just me and my mother), And while I don't recall it being a gender thing, we were constantly swarmed, and being followed around by crowds. (in my memory, mostly beggars hoping for money)

It's because Japanese culture hasn't quite gotten past the whole gender stereotypes thing. It's getting better, i think, but still far from it.

Why is there even a question about this? I don't mean that brutally or harshly... but EVERY CULTURE is obsessed with white women. And white people in general.

I mean, it's the same reason why here in America, one of the most diverse places on the planet... we still churn out media that is white person centric. If skin and race didn't matter, tv shows like "Fresh off the Boat" wouldn't be 'revolutionary'. The "Mindy Project" wouldn't have had the scandal of her only dating White Men. "Friends" wouldn't have had to wait about eight seasons for there to be one character to date a black woman, and have that be some sort of revelation.

Most people are comfortable with only what they know. I grew up New York, so I 'know' most cultures. so I'm open to most cultures. Most people in Hollywood are white and grew up with white people. So they cast and show white people because that's what their default mind goes to.

And Since Hollywood is the most prolific brain washing source in the world... Well, yeah, Whites are going to be accepted wherever they go. They are shown to be the stars and the heroes. Blacks are sidekicks or criminals (if it's tv). Latins are pretty much gangstas or poor mothers and fathers trying to make it, stereotypically.

Whites are where you go if it's different from your race because they are always shown to be the 'best' in media. And too many people get their information about the world from what hollywood puts out than what the news sites put out.

thease things don't always manifest themselves in "positive" ways [footnote/]see also: a lot of things pertaining to the apparent privileges woman have[/footnote]

like if I were an Asian Lady I sure as hell wouldn't appreciate the weird (borderline racist) fetishization some white guys can have, its just gross

or as a white person I wouldn't appreciate being someone else's "exotic slutty fling"

[sub/]disclaimer: I do find Asian people of bother genders (particularly guys) attractive, but I think there are ways people can take it too far[/sub]

aside from Hollywood there are probably a lot of other factors cultural and historical (like colonisation ect) I think thogh its a mistake to assume all cultures view white women as a universal beauty standard....a bit like how when stories of chinease ect women getting eyelid-fold surgery people assumed it was to look more "white" which wasn't nessicaryly true...I don't straighten my hair to loom more Asian

How aren't those things an example of prejudice? Do you think short men would be considered so unattractive if not for how height ties in to our cultural perception of masculinity? Would people be so dismissive of fat people if they weren't conditioned to see fat as gross?

I'm not saying that people should force themselves to have sex with people they aren't attracted to. But I don't see the big deal about acknowledging that maybe the bias you have for or against certain people is influenced by your social and cultural environment. I'm not attracted to fat people but I'm not going to pretend that it's innately just, like, my preference man. It's more than that, and yes, it is prejudiced.

I said that in jest. I'm sure it's true for a few asian\indian bros out there, but I doubt it for most.
If someone won't 'settle for nothing less than a white woman'...yeahthat looks to be pretty racist there.
How is their personal taste "racist?"

Perhaps not in general, no.

That said, we cannot really control what we find attractive-- which often includes features which go very much against societal conditioning.

Well, generally agreed with this part. Societal associations almost certainly play some part, and acknowledgement never hurts. I would still tend to avoid terms like "racism" to describe romantic impulses over which people may have little control.

Oh that's easy. Asian women are beautiful and stay beautiful for a lot longer than other races.

OT: I dunno enough indian bros to answer for them but of all the Japanese men I know, they all seem to share the opinion that Japanese women are mostly gold diggers and that any other race of asian is just not worth shit to them. Younger generations are a lot less in this boat that some of the Japanese men I've worked with in the past however, so this is improving. Attractiveness is entirely subjective but it's not uncommon for trends to appear in communities and for them to shift between generations.

Me, personally, I don't find most (keyword: most) black women sexually attractive but any other race I have no issue. Before someone jumps on me, I can say for sure that there are some black women out there that I find near irresistable. A good example would be Rihanna.

People have little control over their fear impulse too, but if someone is only scared of black people, they tend to be considered racist.

Pssst. When I was in India, I was in an area that never got foreigners. So while I was there, my presence drew crowds. CROWDS. CROWDS OF MORE THAN 20 PEOPLE, JUST STANDING AROUND AND LOOKING AT ME.

Was that internalized racism? Or do people just want what they don't have? Hint: It's the less insidious one.

If you go to Europe and (especially) North America, where people are mostly white, you'll find that tanning your skin is a huge thing. If you go to, say, Asia, you'll find that doing everything possible to keep your skin as light as possible is the "in" thing. Heck, while I was down there, I couldn't find a decent sunscreen that wasn't also brimming with "skin whitening" (because all I really needed was to be even whiter than I already am).

People want what they don't have, people want something different, up to and including race and skin color. Easy.

What is really weird and creepy is how often the "girl can't cook but the guy can" gag appears in anime. Its funny the first few times depending on the characters, but it gets old real fast. Its always this big embarrassing secret for the girl but then the guy is like a master chef and shows the girl how cooking is really done. This may or may not be the intent but after a while the gag seems to disparage women who can't cook by showing it to be something easy for men to do. Men who shouldn't have to learn to cook and who you want to feed for some reason.

OT: I think its a status thing to some of them. You would have the money to go overseas in order to get a white girlfriend, you would also have to be worldly enough to be able to get a white girlfriend that wasn't raised in India.

My ex is Asian and she absolutely hates Asian men. She prefers only white guys and refuses to date any other race.

Just a preference. You can never specify a generalized stereotype - it will always come out sounding racist/bigoted/sexist/etc.
