it's not racist to not be attracted to a race of person any more than it's bigoted to not be attracted to fat people or short people if you think about it
Trust me, I am from the Caribbean and we still have an unusual love for whites and mulattos. Even where I am currently living , girls ,for example, would rather be with a Spanish, European or Indian dudes because they want "pretty hair or light skin" babies. I even experienced this because, people praised me for having "pretty hair" due to my mixed heritage and praised my sister for being "clear skinned" which made me hated myself for being dark and made my sister to be unhappy with her afro-centric hair . I mean, even calling someone "dark" or calling their hair "hard" are considered to be negative traits or insults. I don't know what to think about this other than we will never progress with this "colonial times" mentality.Bob_McMillan said:As a Filipino, our obsession with whiteness is really embarrassing. It seems so pathetic, and screams colonial mentality. Or maybe its because I was born a lot whiter than a lot of my countrymen, Which is funny, because I'd rather be dark.Aerosteam said:My mum told me (who is Filipino) that it's because having light skin, for men and women, is seen as looking rich or healthy in those parts of the world.

As I explained earlier, stereotypes does not mean all, just that the mean has been shifted compared to the "control" group. The Rogue Wolf said:The human brain's inability to deal with large numbers of individuals and subsequent need to aggregate them into generalized groups based on easily-identifiable criteria?
Ouch. I remember that. I was 6 when we travelled through India (by 'we' I mean just me and my mother), And while I don't recall it being a gender thing, we were constantly swarmed, and being followed around by crowds. (in my memory, mostly beggars hoping for money)Carzinex said:Spent a good bit of time in India and asked a similar question after seeing my female friends i was travelling with get some serious harassment. Had to be seen to be believed, flashing of genitals and crowds swarming them on the beach. I know sounds like hyperbole but wasn't i assure you.
Anyway, reason i got from an Indian woman who sold jewellery on the beach is that most native Indians experience with white women is through pornography, so they get the idea that white women are more adventurous and have sex like porn stars do.
Not sure how accurate a statement it was but she believed it.
It's because Japanese culture hasn't quite gotten past the whole gender stereotypes thing. It's getting better, i think, but still far from it.Fox12 said:My big question is what is Japans obsession with a woman who can cook? Seriously, every anime I've seen involves a woman cooking a boxed lunch for her crush. Persona 3 built an entire social link around learning how to cook (snore). Persona 4 used it as a recurring joke. Most countries dropped the whole "the way to a mans heart is through his stomach" bit in the 50's. It's not even about gender stereotypes, I just think it's weird.

aside from Hollywood there are probably a lot of other factors cultural and historical (like colonisation ect) I think thogh its a mistake to assume all cultures view white women as a universal beauty standard....a bit like how when stories of chinease ect women getting eyelid-fold surgery people assumed it was to look more "white" which wasn't nessicaryly true...I don't straighten my hair to loom more AsianObsidianJones said:Why is there even a question about this? I don't mean that brutally or harshly... but EVERY CULTURE is obsessed with white women. And white people in general.

How aren't those things an example of prejudice? Do you think short men would be considered so unattractive if not for how height ties in to our cultural perception of masculinity? Would people be so dismissive of fat people if they weren't conditioned to see fat as gross?its big chope said:it's not racist to not be attracted to a race of person any more than it's bigoted to not be attracted to fat people or short people if you think about it
How is their personal taste "racist?"thaluikhain said:If someone won't 'settle for nothing less than a white woman'...yeahthat looks to be pretty racist there.heroofheroin said:I said that in jest. I'm sure it's true for a few asian\indian bros out there, but I doubt it for most.
Perhaps not in general, no.manic_depressive13 said:How aren't those things an example of prejudice? Well, generally agreed with this part. Societal associations almost certainly play some part, and acknowledgement never hurts. I would still tend to avoid terms like "racism" to describe romantic impulses over which people may have little control.manic_depressive13 said:I'm not saying that people should force themselves to have sex with people they aren't attracted to. But I don't see the big deal about acknowledging that maybe the bias you have for or against certain people is influenced by your social and cultural environment. I'm not attracted to fat people but I'm not going to pretend that it's innately just, like, my preference man. It's more than that, and yes, it is prejudiced.
Oh that's easy. Asian women are beautiful and stay beautiful for a lot longer than other races.Casual Shinji said:Well, what is it with white guys and their obsession for Asian women?
People have little control over their fear impulse too, but if someone is only scared of black people, they tend to be considered racist.Silvanus said:Well, generally agreed with this part. What is really weird and creepy is how often the "girl can't cook but the guy can" gag appears in anime. Its funny the first few times depending on the characters, but it gets old real fast. Its always this big embarrassing secret for the girl but then the guy is like a master chef and shows the girl how cooking is really done. This may or may not be the intent but after a while the gag seems to disparage women who can't cook by showing it to be something easy for men to do. Men who shouldn't have to learn to cook and who you want to feed for some reason.Fox12 said:My big question is what is Japans obsession with a woman who can cook?
