The ones that instantly came to mind were The Orphanage, Martyrs, Battle Royale, [REC] and Dead Snow (what? I like horror movies...).

Also, maybe this is cheating, 'cause it's not exactly foreign for me, but seeing everyone mentioning Let The Right One In, I'm just going to go ahead and mention another Swedish vampire movie; Frostbite

House of flying daggers
Crouching tiger hidden dragon
Snatch
Lock, stock and two smoking barrels
Non-US films is pretty broad, do you actually want foreign language films or what?

Lilja 4-Ever (a drama about sex trafficking )
Dead Snow (Nazi zombies in the Norwegian mountains)
Hotel Rwanda may or may not be American, but there aren't enough movies that take place in a contemporary African setting, so it's getting a recommendation.
Tetsuo: the Iron Man (surreal Japanese cyberpunk flick)

Battle Royal for Japanese

And District B-13. My favorite foreign movie /ever/. The first foreign movie I ever could watch the whole thing through.

I'm not sure if Pan's Labyrinth counts, but I absolutely loved that movie.

Also, Amelie. A really fun French film.

Amélie of course!

I'm surprised no one else has mentioned it yet.

Thank you France!

Ah yes, I'll second Lilja 4-Ever.

Also, that reminds me of another great movie by Lukas Moodysson: Fucking Åmål
(err... the English title is "Show Me Love" or something, I think...)

Foreign means non-US now? That's pretty Americentric. But the thread seems to be positive so I won't try to create any problems.

I'll have to go with Come and See (Idi I Smotri). It's a Russian film about the German invasion of Belarus during World War II, seen through the eyes of a 14 year old who wants to join the Partisans and fight the German invaders. I'd also have to say that it's one of my favorite movies period, it's so amazingly depressing. After watching it, I, and the people that have watched it that I've talked to just feel empty and hollow inside. I've never watched a movie that made me feel as strongly as Come and See, so I'd recommend it to anyone.

Fucking Åmål is a fantastic high school drama. I vaguely remember that the title was changed internationally because some film festivals didn't want to feature a movie with a somewhat severe curse word in its title.

OT: Another movie I'd recommend that's not American is Tyrannosaur. A British movie about a spectacularly angry alcoholic man who decides to try to change his unpleasant ways after kicking his dog to death, and befriends a nice religious woman. It might still be in theatres over there (it got a rather limited release here).

Less pretentiously, I'd recommend about half of the Toho Godzilla movies. Some of them are great fun! Also, if you haven't already for whatever reason, you really should see Troll 2. The movie may qualify as American on account of being filmed and cast with native actors and actresses, but the director and screenwriter were Italians who insisted that the lines were to be delivered as written. The result is quite mesmerizing.

Ikiru and Wings of Desires, hands down. Two of my favorite movies of all time.
