I've come to the conclusion that this websites pretty split on the usage of memes. On one side some people view the usage of memes, annoying and repeated way too often, and doesn't ad anything to the conversation or topic at hand. While on the other hand some people view them as humorous, sometimes witty inserts into a thread.

I view them as one of the manifestations of internet culture, and although sometimes immature and offensive, its adds to the community as a whole.

Memes are just a way for bland people who are lacking in personality to co-opt the personality of others. People use them for the same reason that people quote from TV shows and so forth - it's an easier process for the mind than having an original thought. Memes are therefore an indicator of laziness, and they're used because people would rather have other people do the thinking for them.

I like memes. I think they are pretty cool things. They make funny catchphrases and doesnt afraid of anything.

In all serious, I like some memes (the one used above and "then a skeleton popped out" being my two favorite). Some are annoying and get way overused though, like the cake. God damn that cake.

If I hear people use more than one in a conversation, or more than one in the course of five minutes though, I generally try to stop talking to them. Don't bring them into every day conversation. That's just lame.

I agree with you on most counts. On one hand, these things are overdone, and discourage original thought. This really gets me, especially when people who should know better and put in the effort to speak to me.

On the other hand, sometimes people simply find them amusing and wish to share the joke.

I find them annoying more often than funny, however.

I love memes, they can make me smile, laugh and crack up.

However some can be rarely annoying.

I'm really only into the memes that are associated with the games I play and the anime I watch.

If they're passing off that other person's thoughts as their own - exactly the same.

To clarify, some of the original ideas that spawned the memes themselves are indeed very amusing. I enjoy going on ED and looking at the origins of memes as much as the next person. However once a meme gets in circulation and used out-of-context to apply to various things where it doesn't actually apply (in other words, once a meme actually becomes a meme) then it's supplanting the spaces where people's actual personalities are supposed to go. Instead of telling you how I really feel in my own words, that reflect my own personality, instead I can just parrot something someone else said on some site somewhere - it's a mentally lazy way of communicating. I don't communicate personally or professionally with people who do that, because I don't feel I'm actually communicating with their real selves.
