What is your (realistic) Dream Job?

Mine is the position of Ambassador of Japan because I'm quite interested in foreign affairs and I'm a huge weeb.

But seriously, the relationship between Japan and the United States is super interesting for reasons I don't really want to write about now.

What about you?

Just to throw it out there now; could you define "realistic"?

As in, is it something that I could actually do in real life or is something in real life that exists?

For example: I currently work at a bank and am looking for a new job. I just had an interview for a Underwriting gig; something that I think looks like a job I would really enjoy doing and it pays (relatively) well.

Or I love soccer. I would love to be a world class goalie. World Class Goalie is something that actually exists but with my age and lack of ability, I barely qualify for a "for fun" league, let alone play for the EPL or something...

You cannot be the space Emperor, so something that exists in real life or is feasible in your lifetime. my runner up best job ever was CEO of a pioneering asteroid mining company.

In your case, I would say look for the top position of your niche. So instead of an Underwriter, be an Overwriter!

I think being a voice actor for video games, anime, cartoons, etc. would be really fun. How awesome would it be to voice a video game character, play game with said character, and then listen to yourself why you play. Or same for an anime. That'd be so cool. Salary is not the best, but I'd probably enjoy everyday of work.

Independent comic (maybe novels too) writer that stays at home and watches the theoretical kids. May end up actually happening too depending how much bread my future wife's winning. Currently taking home the bacon while my girlfriend studies medicine, so the likelihood of this happening is far higher than many of my other dreams XD

I'd love to run a small/medium sized record label. Pretty much a label large enough to not require me to hold down a job to cover expenses, and pay rent and utilities for whatever facilities I need to work and maybe a studio apt. I'd also be doing some free lance illustration and design on the side as well.

More or less what I do now (composing music) but on bigger projects that pay better :p

A film or game at the commercial level, with a good chance of success would be really nice. I'm not necessarily talking blockbusters here (although that would be very fun!) but say, if I regularly got work composing for the bigger indie films and games out there that would be great. Especially since most of that stuff is depressing and I specialise in depressing!

Film critic.

I'm on my way. I've got the experience and once I've got the degree, there should be no stopping me. I hope.

I want to become a fiction Writer/Author.

After all the roleplaying I have done on here, why not?
I enjoy it, I read many books, and my imagination can extend/bend itself to my will. So it makes sense, it is something that I will love doing, but it isn't impossible.

Heck, I'm even planning a book right now!
Well, that and I am currently studying under a professional writing major (and already have a mass communication diploma).

Actually, I'd really like to have a graphic novel series set in the world I've designed for the set of novels I have sporadically been working on. And the best friend I grew up with is even an artist, so hey, who knows.

I believe I could make a passable editor/proofreader as well. I'd have to pay far more attention to grammatical structuring, but literature/the written word is what holds the greatest amount of my attention insofar as careers I'm interested in go.

At one time I would have entertained the thought of being a video game critic, but now? HAH. Yeah right. If I'm going to be getting hundreds of people talking about how I'm a terrible person on a daily basis, I'd like it to be because I wrote something with greater meaning than giving Grand Theft Auto VII a 6/10.

Tough field to get into, but I'd go for that one as well.
From what I hear, they audition constantly, even well known VAs like Steve Blum.

I'd love to work in academia.

I want to teach people at a university level for a living about the things that really interest me. For me, that area is religion, and because of that, there are a lot of metaphysical questions that I work through on a daily basis and I would love to be in an environment with students that are much more apt to working through those with me instead of just rambling on and on to people who could care less. I don't know... maybe it's weird, but I always really enjoyed ranting about things I'm interested in, so it seems to make sense.

Overthrow of the capitalist system from extreme inequality and the relentless advance of automation, followed by a post-scarcity society where all labor is performed by robots.

A 'job' would be something indistinguishable from play, or a hobby.

Screenwriter. I have the degree and I've already written on commission, but work stints come far in between. I've gotten more work as a film critic than as a screenwriter, and while criticism in itself has some very nice perks - including getting more readers than I ever did as a "proper" writer - I feel like it's the easy way out for me.

I had similar ambitions about getting into gaming press when I was studying journalism in college but changed my mind pretty quickly. I wonder why XD

Honestly, I have found that it's very difficult to rely on collaborators when it comes to personal projects. At the end of the day there is no incentive for keeping up with deadlines or getting any real results unless you're just a very motivated/goal-oriented person. That said, I have been seriously considering getting back into art. I used to draw a lot as a child and am still about as good as I used to be (which isn't very good at all). Despite my current skill level, I believe I have a natural talent for it, and believe I can become good if I put in the effort. I know a lot of great artists who have told me they would be willing to instruct me and help me improve if I step up to the challenge, so we'll see what happens there. Being able to write and draw my own comics will offer a huge advantage when I am first starting off, I imagine.

Cheater :p

I have been looking into how I could potentially break into the industry, but have been struggling to figure out in what capacity. I've been working in enterprise software for three years now, and though it's at least in a related industry, working on the consulting/business side, my job experience so far doesn't seem to have any obvious applications in the game industry. Not only that but even if it did, I am not sure I would want to do that kind of stuff in the game industry.

My current strategy is the maneuver myself into another position sometime within the next year or two that has a broader application to other industries/jobs. If it works out I may find myself there someday XD

Funny enough, my artist friend is actually a far more motivated person than I am. He's got a very "grab life by the horns and throttle it into submission" view on the future.

Unfortunately, I don't have any natural talent for drawing. Even my stick-men aren't symmetrical or proportional.
