I have a Justice League of 5 (Silent Hill 2, Resident Evil 4, Shadow of the Colossus, Okami and Dragon Quest VIII) that I can never quite put in order, and the other 5 spots are reserved for series from which I just can't pick one.

You know I actually had a top 100 list going at one point? And I was having trouble trimming down to just 100? And that was with combining entire series into single entries? Like, all Ultima games as one entry, all Fallout games, etc.

Completely unwieldy.

Anyway I won't bother posting it here because ultimately the issue with these lists is that people never read or comment on what someone else has posted, they just post their own and close thread. I've often pondered ways to create a "top games" thread and actually force discussion in it, but I've never come up with anything that wasn't overly gamey.

One of these threads eh? Ok Ill join in this time its been awhile. I dont have a top 10 in all my many years gaming their have only been 3 games that have stood out among the rest and they are

1. FFVII
2. Valkyria Chronicles
3. Xenoblade Chronicles

There have been plenty others I have enjoyed such as Super Mario Bros 1 and 3, Street Fighter 2, Soul Calibur, Crash Team Racing among plenty of others. Okami is probably the closest to being 4th on the list but I dont feel its quite in the same league even though I absolutely adore that game.

I dont tend to make lists of my favourites I dont have a top 10 film list for instance as none have stood out enough for me to name even a favourite film. Ive got a favourite book list well top 2 anyway.

3. World of Warcraft (PC)
4. GTA 3: San Andreas (PS2)
5. Mega Man II (NES)
6. Street Gangs/River City Ransom (NES)
7. Pokemon Red/Blue/Yellow (Gameboy)
8. Fallout: New Vegas (PC)
9. Metal Gear Solid (PS1)

Honourable mentions to Ico & Shadow of the Colossus, Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask, Half Life 2, Arkham Asylum, Team Fortress 2, Final Fantasy VII, Battlefield 2142, Banjo Kazooie, & Super Mario World.

Let's see... I guess most of my favourite games came out looong ago. But the fact that they stayed with me since then should speak for itself.

Just for completeness sake: There are definately more than 10 Top games in my list. I've been playing loads of different titles in the last 35 years. But I'll narrow it down a bit.

In no particular order:
1. Xenogears (PS1)
A true epic in terms of soundtrack and story. And quite some thought provoking themes.

2. Chrono Cross (PS1)
Yes, I went there. I think almost everything in this game is surperior to 'Chrono Trigger'. But it's perfectly acceptable if you disagree.

3. Lost Odyssey (Xbox 360)
I'll repeat what I always say about this game: 'Lost Odyssey' is the best Final Fantasy since the 9th one.

4. Thief 1, 2 & Deadly Shadows (PC)
The atmosphere and lore sucks me in every time I fire them up. Check out the animated cutscenes to get a feeling for why they are great.

5. Okami (PS3)
Beautifully crafted in every way. I still remember a professional game reviewer/moron that refused to play the game just because of its art style. Shame on him.

6. Journey (PS3)
Again, it's the atmosphere and especially the soundtrack that strike an emotional resonance with me. While the plot is open for interpretation I always think it's about coming back to a place where you are deeply missed.

7. Super Castlevania (SNES)
While mostly forgotten by gamers, I loved the game the first time I laid eyes on it. I do appreciate the newer 3D and 2D Castlevanias as well, but in this game everything that I wanted came together. And concerning the soundtrack: In my opinion it's the best one Castlevania ever had.

8. A Link to the Past (SNES)
While not doing anything new like Ocarina and Majora, I enjoy this version of Zelda so much more.

9. Every Ace Attorney game (DS/3DS)
Well, I just enjoy the gameplay, quirky characters and bizarre cases. 'Ace Attorney' is one of the very few series that I will always buy, no matter the review scores.

10. Secret of Mana (SNES)
Mostly an RPG-Zelda-clone, but such a well done copy. And again it's the soundtrack that deserves special mention

11. Silent Hill 1-4 (PS2)
Yeah, the horror works. And I found the way Konami presented a haunted flat very disturbing.

12. Project Zero/Fatal Frame 1-3 (PS2)
I had to play through the games with two friends watching because we couldn't take it alone. But I guess I like the games exactly because of my memories of this time.

13. Metal Gear Solid 3
I've never experienced such a crushing ending like in this one. When I realized why the 'cutscene' in the field didn't continue, I had to take a deep breath.

14. Sly Cooper 1-4
There's something oddly charming about the gang. And I like the cutscenes and Sucker Punch's humor.

Hmmmmmmm...

10. Beyond Atlantis - It's also on my bottom ten list. It's so off its rocker that it's awesome. I have an LP of it on my YouTube channel if you want to experience it.
9. Tomb Raider IV: The Last Revelation - It's probably the Tomb Raider that feels the most like actual tomb raiding.
8. Titan Quest - The best Diablo clone by far. And hitting satyrs so hard they get stuck in trees never gets old.
7. Minecraft - It's Minecraft! :D
6. Riven - A very solid adventure game, as well as having pretty much the best ending in gaming history.
5. Tomb Raider III - It's just the best package of all the Tomb Raider games. Plus, it's actually quite challenging.
4. SpaceChem - Chemistry + Visual programming = my braaaaaaaaaaaaaaain :(
3. Just Cause 2 - Screw reality, let's blow up everything for the good of the people!
2. Myst Online - It's the craziest experiment in gaming history, and I think it JUST works. Also, it's gorgeous.
1. Mirror's Edge - Too much fun, with all that adrenaline... WOO.

Heh, thought you were Signas. I was gonna respond saying where the fuck in Morrorwind. lol

Anyway, it's still too early for me to make this list, but I'm working on it. I have a layout at the moment, but it will probably change a fair bit. This is not a favourites list either, mainly basing this on the execution of their revealing.

10) Metroid Prime
9 ) Starcraft: Brood War
8 ) Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask
7 ) Deus Ex
6 ) Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater
5 ) Half Life 2
4 ) Super Metroid
3 ) Chrono Trigger
2 ) Castlevania: Symphony of the Night
1 ) Half Life

I still need to play some of these again to make sure, including some classics I need to replay like some of the Final Fantasy games, Silent Hill games, Warcraft 3, Fallout games, etc. etc. Won't be happy till I double check it all dammit. Edit: Oh yeah, I need to look at PoE again

I always read through them all, but your definitely not wrong about the lack of reply's.

I think the only way you may succeed creating discussion in a top games thread is by being a bit forward like displaying it was the truth while giving good reasons why you've listed it there. That or you become famous and get more attention that way.

Ay, 10 is a bit too many. I find discussion is better generated by just listing 2 or 3 and talking a bit about why you like them. For instance:

Ratchet & Clank: I love everything about this game. The brilliantly creative weapons & gadgets (what other game has a flamethrower, a giant boxing glove, and a ray to turn enemies into chickens?), the actually very well written plot and characters, the varied levels taking place on all manner of different planets throughout the galaxy. etc.

Gawd, too many contenders. I'll probably think of a few more after I post this too. Despite the numbers, in no particular order.

1) SaGa Frontier
2) Final Fantasy Tactics
3) Final Fantasy 6
4) Chrono Trigger
5) Super Mario World
6) Tetris
7) Legend of Zelda, Link to the Past
8) World of Tanks
9) Metroid Prime 2
10) Combat

My top two constantly switch places with each other:

1. Xenoblade Chronicles
2. Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time

Likewise, 3-5 constantly switch places with each other (though #5 is a relatively new entry):

3. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare
4. Super Mario Bros. 3
5. Portal 2

And the few also can easily switch positions:

6. Super Mario Galaxy
7. Mass Effect Trilogy (yeah, yeah, I cheat)
8. The Witcher
9. Mario Kart 64 (I freely admit this is more about nostalgia than anything)

The last one is really up in the air, as way too many games to list can take the spot at any time.

1. Conker's Bad Fur Day
This is what every comedy game should be; self aware & self referential without being obnoxious. Also the gameplay is absolutely perfect, with just frustrating enough puzzles and platforms that you want to scream and then oohhh...that feeling of seeing the next cut-scene and laughing your ass off at how the N64 censors let fellatio into a kids game.
Absolutely fantastic

2. Bioshock Infinite
Its rare to have a FPS with a deep story-line. Rarer still to have one with a protagonist(Elizabeth. Its clearly her game.) that's likable, sympathetic and bad-ass all in one go. Also her confidence in Burial at Sea is amazing. See, that's how you do confident sexuality right, Bayonetta fans. Tease. Leave them wanting more. Flashing your cheese every other move spoils things.
And one of the most re-playable games I know.

3. Mass Effect 3
Ending not withstanding, an absolutely fantastic experience. Kaidan, Jack, Liara, fucking Tali! I will hold ME3 as the standard for characterization for all RPGs.

4. Dawn of War II
Hands down the best RTS I've ever played, and I've played a bunch. A must have for any 40k fan.

5. Silent Hill 3
The only Silent Hill game to realized having a vulnerable & likable protagonist actually adds desperation to keeping them alive. Say what you will about Silent Hill 2 and its oh so oppressive and isolating atmosphere(except for all the dorky people you're constantly meeting), at least Heather was a person you wanted to help. James is a idiot and an ass from the begining and I couldn't care less what Pyramid plans to shove up his ass.
Though the cult scenes in SH3 drag along a bit, I consider its actually isolating(as in you're alone. You know, isolation) atmoshpere and creative monsters to be on an all together higher scale than SH2. Also when it comes to a horror game's metaphors, child rape is way worse than spousal murder.

6. FF VI
The first game I ever played and a paragon of what a truly epic RPG feels like. Sorry Skyrim and Dragon Age, you're messily 100hr gameplay can't hold a candle to Terra's quest. Hell i was at 99+hrs before the world ended in FF6, and that's the halfway point!
Sadly I've been searching for a GBA copy that works. First 4 were duds. Hopefully #5 will work!

7. Fallout New Vegas
Despite what I've said it other threads, I still love this game. Hell, I have an entire playlist in iTunes that's basically Radio New Vegas songs. A massive improvement on Fallout 3's clunky story, unlikable characters and near universal ammo shortage. I couldn't count the number of quests I had to abandon halfway through in Fallout 3 because I 100% ran out of ammo for everything and my enemies were...Super Mutants or giant ants.
Stay classy New Vegas.

8. Amnesia a Machine for Pigs
A massive improvement on Darkest Descent, which was awesome in its own right. A Machine for Pigs take a noble idea, how far are you willing to go to stop World War 1 and twists it into a nightmare where you're left wondering if maybe we humans deserve a world war. I mean any game where you throw up your hands and say "Fuck it, lets all go fight the Battle of the Somme! It's gotta be better than this!" has got to be fucking with your head.
Now have a stiff drink.

9. Mass Effect
A classic and probably a game that redefined character based RPGs. Shows a little bit more age each passing year, but still amazing. Last playthrough though I found myself skipping more dialogue than I listened to. Maybe in a few year it'll come back into its own, like aged wine.

10. KOTOR
Surprised this isn't on more lists. It's KOTOR considered the best Star Wars game of all time, and one of the few extended universe plots worth knowing? I mean Carth, Bastila, Mission! These characters defined my early teens.
I miss this game. I should go play it on Steam.

8. Zombies Ate My Neighbors
9. UN Squadron

-Valkyria Chronicles
-Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest
-Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2
-City of Heroes/City of Villains
-StarCraft
-Half-Life
-Telltale's Tales From The Borderlands (Shaping up to be a favorite of mine, but it's far from complete as of this time)

Okay, so the way I set this list up was list the 10 games I kept referring back to on my own time, including those that I would recommend to anyone at anytime and those that I have replayed more times that I would actually know... Then, I tried not to list a game from a game series more than once, so choosing between one game in the series over the other was mainly based on which one I enjoyed the most... Then, I got lazy and just placed numbers wherever I felt like it, but later rearrange them in order so that no one would know about me just placing numbers out of order... (Also, that list is mostly false, since I never usually label games on a "top X" list to begin with, so don't take it the wrong way... At least I can say that I enjoyed playing all 10 of them on multiple occasions...)
Now, I probably would replace some of those games listed, like replacing Rayman Origins with Rayman Legends, as well as probably adding either Rez, Child of Eden, Monster Girl Quest, or Monster Girl Quest in the pseudo-11 spot on the list... Other than that, I did have <link=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/jump/9.867658.21708304>another, more detailed list, but I digress... I guess...

I don't know if I can make it to 10 but this will be my attempt :
(ordered by love and in the case of ties, amount of time played)

1) Final Fantasy 6 - truly the most flushed out characters, 8 bit or otherwise, that I've seen put in a game
2) Baldur's Gate 2 - I can't count how many times I played this game through to listen to the banter
3) Warcraft 3 - the addition of heroes to the warcraft franchise elevated what was already the best RTS around
4) Dragon Age Origins - A great spiritual successor of BG2, great characters + interaction
5) Mass Effect 2/3 - Loved 1 too, but the series really took off at 2 and soared to the end

I think that's the short list of my all time favs. But I'll finish the list with the games that I have loved / currently loving:

6) Bioshock Infinite - an amazing combination of art + action and it makes you think
7) World of Warcraft - well it certainly ate up enough of my life to appear on this list, still get the craving to go back...
8) Shadows of Mordor - just plain fun
9) Gemcraft series - hard to pick one, if pushed I'd pick the most recent one on steam, just a great TD
10) FTL - Great strategy / space game, you should try it if you haven't already

I wont try to order them because I love them all for different reasons, which I will in fact mention.

The 2 that came out last year( the shining beacon of glory in the sludge of pure shit that was last year) are:

Transistor-Amazing music, still listening to it. Great combat, perfect story. My only complaint is that the challenge mode bosses read your inputs and thats cheating, rest of the game is perfect though.

South Park The Stick of Truth: It is the perfect transition from the show into a game. I cannot recommend it enough if the game trying its best to offend you sounds like a great time. O god so many perfect moments that I wish I could mention but it would spoil the game so I wont.

Killing Floor: It's what evolve wishes it could of done. It's JUST a horde mode... but the game feels so good that years later its player base numbers mock evolves. It's gory and beautiful and the guns feel great.

Super Mario RPG: If you have to ask, you're a horrible person. Top notch RPG, with brilliant music and combat, the plots hilarious and the only gripe is that its too easy, but well worth playing regardless.

Tactics Ogre Let us Cling together: You like Final Fantasy Tactics? This is FFT only better polished. If you have a PSP or a VITA, buy it NOW. If not, buy a vita damn you! Its a better handheld than the 3DS :p.

The Secret World: A Greatly under appreciated MMO. There are no "classes". You make your own build from over 100 skills that you pick and choose. Theres also no levels. Then theres the absolutely amazing story and incredibly difficult research missions. They also have the best B2P model in the MMO genre.

Jade Empire: Back when Bioware was good. Like Kotor? This is an epic Martial Arts game in the same vein as KOTOR, only it works way better, is way deeper and has an amazing combat and story system. It's on steam right now, get it!

Saints row(series): I just can't pick one, I'm so sorry. They're all great and everytime I play them I'm screaming and laughing at how badass it is.

Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines: Buy it, install it, install the unofficial patch, profit. An amazingly deep RPG with great characters, sweet music and where you get to play the monster.

Fallout 3: Such a great game, pure exploration fun. Sneaking through tunnels, sniping mutants, talking to tree, find lost lore. So great.

10. Command and Conquer Tiberian Sun
Yes, I know Red Alert 2 is probably superior in almost every way, but this was the first C&C game I actually owned and I absolutely adore the Tiberium universe's setting, so it gets major kudos for atmosphere and nostalgia. It brings a lot of innovation to the original C&C and Red Alert, with huge graphical and gameplay improvements.

9. Skyrim
The sheer content, freedom of open world, and friendliness of modding make sinking 100s of hours into this game a joy. Loses point for unfortunate shallowness of many gameplay features and bugs.

8. Fallout 3
Massive open world, loads to do. Excellent setting. Really brought the previous games to a whole other level by being an FPS. Loads of bugs though.

7. Hitman Silent Assassin
Excellent stealth game that provides versatile maps with dozens of ways to pull off each hit. Stealth is emphasized, and is a lot better balanced in this than the sequels which tend to be more violence orientated.

6. Pokemon (Red or Blue)
The graphics have aged poorly, and future games have far better balances of moves and types, I have to give the originals huge kudos though for doing the Pokemon formula first, bringing the huge worlds and not-too-intense grinding. Absolute hours upon hours of fun.

5. Splinter Cell Chaos Theory
The balance between Bond gadgets and old fashioned sneaking is near perfect, combined with punishing (but not impossible) combat if things go south that is again perfectly balanced to encourage stealth, but allow more combat oriented strategies as well. An intriguing storyline and twist involving a character established in previous games also catapults this to a really high polished game.

4. Pokemon Crystal
Huge leap in graphics, much better balancing, and new Pokemon add a very welcome diversity to the original roster, without any that really seem out of place or glaring retreads. Loads of new features and content make everything fresh and provides a really well fleshed out new world. A really, really worthy sequel.

3. Halo CE
Excellent gameplay, generic storyline has an excellent twist with the Flood and a rip roaring ending that really brings this game into a whole other level. One of my favourite Sci-fi settings.

2. Medal of Honor Frontline
The emotion of the Arnhem Knights level was breathtaking. The action in most other levels was fantastic, the storyline was engaging enough and the soundtrack was absolutely, gobsmackingly, unbelievably, outstanding.

1. Knights of the Old Republic
Good gameplay mechanics, great world-building, excellent characters, and a fantastic storyline.

Probably forgetting some really awesome games, but these were pretty much the first games that sprung to mind as being worthy.
