What is a nerd? I need a solid definition. And don't just cite Wikipedia...

Someone who's good with technology, movies, literature and video games and usually is a social outcast.

That about sums it up.

Personally, I view nerds as being more intellectually inclined than anything else, whilst still socially-awkward. Geeks I see as being the tech, movies, literature, Anime, etc.

Although the two DO overlap so much that more often than not the person is both.

Eh, wouldnt know, I have friends, I go outside a lot, I can go for more than a month not playing Xbox.

A nerd can be someone who cuts themselves off from the living population for electronic entertainment

I don't see how having friends and going out means you wouldn't know what a word means.

I'm the same as you yet I'd consider myself a nerd.

Well I wouldnt really consider myself a nerd, just probably like more than halfway to the point of being one.

Oh wait I have a better definition for the word, a nerd can be someone that focuses on one thing a sticks too it for a long time, like a fanboy

Well I only consider myself a nerd because I'm into programming and computer stuff, and getting into games more than I should do.
I think that's my only nerdy quality is computers, so I seem to associate nerds with technology.

Seems like a lot of people are confusing nerds with geeks and yes there is a difference. A geek will fix your computer, a nerd will quote full episodes of Star Trek.

Edit: Nerd - A person with an intense interest in a socially unpopular hobby (anime, star wars/trek, etc.).

My definition of a nerd is a person who plays card games (ie. Magic, Yu-gi-ho, etc.) only talks to other nerds, knows a bunch of jokes referring to a nerdy show, plays a little bit of video games. While a geek is someone who is more Tech Savvy, plays a lot of video games, loves something about japan, talks to geeks and nerds and a few others, looks up news on games at least 7 months before release. At least those are some traits I have for Nerd and Geek. I consider myself more of a Geek and a little bit of a nerd.

I consider myself to be an absolute Geek;
Among other differences are that Nerds tend to dress more obviously while Geeks tend to just dress casually; Nerds are much more sociable, while Geeks tend to (not dislike) but not care about interaction...
There are the odd exceptions to these.

Nerd: math wiz, can kick your ass in a quiz bowl.
Geek: l33t sk1llz more tech and game oriented.
Ubergeek/Ubernerd: that kid you think is most likely building a super robot in his garage.

At least, that's how I see it.

Someone who remains a child at heart.

I guess that's a romantic way of putting it.

I see a nerd as someone who chooses to pursue intellectual activities, like Math competitions, etc., while a geek is someone who is much more technologically savvy. I consider myself to fall into both categories pretty heavily. Though i wish there was a term for people who fall in both areas. It gets tough trying to distinguish which crowd you fit in better with.=/
