The Mongolian horde spread like a plague within the 13th century and the expansions were especially felt during the rule of Genghis Khan. The empire then became known as the largest contiguous empire in mankind's history, surpassing Alexander the Great's conquests. Despite the failures (invasion of Japan as a notable example), and the fact that the Empire itself didn't last, it certainly left a mark on our history books as one of the most fearsome civilizations ever encountered. Heck the news of a 'Golden Horde' having their ways with the Turks struck fear within the European nations themselves.

The question is, what made them such a success? What made them spread like rats during a bubonic plague? What were the tangibles and intangibles?
