The game industry has recently played leap frog with numerous inovations and techniques. Some may argue, that the innovations are falling like dominoes, before the previous ones can be fully utilised and enjoyed.

As I am a bit of a nostalgic old schooler, I love retro side scrollers, for me, that is the definition of a video game. One simply designed cartoonish character churning their way through the hordes of the evil overlord, to save the princess and or world.

Not to say I dont enjoy the immersion of bioshock, or the instant brutal gratification that is Gears of War. But the 2 pixelated gods of Mario, Sparkster, Sonic and Shinobi, will always be what I hold dear.

So, back to topic, what defines games for you? Do you have any good memories of some of the old schoolers?

Nothing really specific defines a game for me - if it clicks with me, then I like it.

A fun, all around, FPS experience. Something with Co-op, Multiplayer, and Single that blows me away.

What defines a good game more than anything else, is the ability to keep playing it without getting bored with it. There are certain games I've been playing on-and-off for years now while still enjoying them just as much as when I first got them, or in some cases even more. To me, that's the real sign of a great game.

Being able to play it for a while, and then get up and go 'That was 8 hours?!'
...this.
Although perhaps some fun too, as I find that I may hate a game, but I'll still play it for hours because damnit I want to know what happens!
