Drambuie is DELICIOUS. I had it on my mum's birthday (mixed with vanilla ice cream), and it was awesome. Strong, but awesome :D

Like a few people already mentioned, you can't really go wrong with rum and coke. That goes down pretty easy. I little bit too easy sometimes and it's a little too sweet for me...

Something that I like and that's more refreshing is gin with grape tonic. Don't mix too much gin in it though or it'll taste like a wunderbaum.

Another thing I like for a party is some nice, aged tequila. It's usually a bit darker in color than the cheap common one. If you go down this route, don't forget about the lemon and salt since that's half the pleasure!

Apart from that, I'll just give you the advice to take a stroll around the room every now and then while drinking since that's the best way to find out how drunk you really are! (especially important if you're drinking tequila shots =))

Well, happy birthday now!

I don't drink myself so I can't suggest anything for you, with any serious tone. (despite my new avatar)

I can suggest something you will never be able to get hold of but for it's name alone deserves a mention.

Ready? ....

Tactical nuclear penguin, Apparently it's the world's strongest beer at 32%.

Buy the alcoholic piss knows as Bud Light. That way, alcohol can only get better.

My own personal rant:
How come EVERY SINGLE party I go to, there has to be Bud Light or some over American beer that tastes like piss?! I'm American. I love my country but, we suck at making beer! Why can't the people that throw the parties that I go to understand that the good shit comes from Germany? Oh well, I do always have my Handy-Dandy Flask filled with Canadian whiskey!

Happy 21st and enjoy the wonderful world of alchohol you now have access too.

Remember, only drink what you enjoy drinking and NEVER just drink to get drunk, it's a waste of time and good booze!

Since you're just getting started I would avoid the beer. Wait until BBQ season and then pick up whatever folks around here recommend on a nice, hot summer day after a good steak. That's the time for beer and once you acquire a taste for it, you can drink it all you like.

However as your FIRST ever real Alcohol Purchase I would recommend some Captain Morgan's Spiced rum. Mix with some coke in a tall glass until it tastes good to you and enjoy. A Rum and Coke is a good all rounder, it actually tastes good and has enough punch to see you through an evening. Similarly, Vanilla Vodka and Ginger Ale has the same effect and is just as tasty.

If you want something "straight," Peach Schnapps is tasty when sipped and Bailey's is very easy drinking.

I would avoid shots, since you're new at it, and holding the alcohol in your mouth longer than you're supposed to can be unpleasant.

Again, since you're new, avoid Whiskey, Gin, Rye, Brandy and anything powerful that was meant to be had "straight" or "on the rocks".

If you want to try Martini's I recommend going out to a restaurant or bar that does them well, learn from the best before you try it yourself.
For the most part, this guy knows what he's talking about. BUT (and this is a big but) first time drinkers SHOULD consider grain based drinks because of the more positive relationship with memory. Drinks such as whiskey and rye don't mess with your head in terms of hangovers like other drinks will. his puts both whiskey and rye back in the game.

I would suggest and edit the following to this fine person's post:

-No shnapps. Ever.
-Glenfiddich Single Malt Scotch Whiskey. Very cheap (around $50 CND for a generous bottle) and gives a manly 'oomph' on the way down. Mix with Dr. Pepper if you feel brave for an aquired taste.
-Jägermeister. don't drink this straight. If you go out to a bar, get it mixed with something. A good combination that my prefered bartender found out one night is 1/2 Jager, 1/4 melon, 1/4 citrius. We call it the "Golden Sunshine" because it makes you smile all the way down. Any good bartender should be able to know how to mix it if you give them that. If they don't, leave and never go back until they switch bartenders (seriously).
-No martinis. These have vodka and vodka is bad for people starting out drinking. I've seen too many people fall to the dreaded tasteless devil and ended up needing me to nurse them the night over. (insidently one reason my ex is my ex.)
-Grains before grapes. Champagne with nothing else. Just to avoid being sick.

These tips are a mixture of both personal experience and those engrained into my soul from The Man's Book by Thomas Fink (very good read and VERY useful guide.)

But no matter what, have a good birthday and a rockin good time with friends and company alike!

If you really want to have a 21st to remember, don't go buying a crap load of alcohol for the sole purpose of getting smashed. For it to be memorable, you need to actually be able to remember it. :p Plus, not having an awful hangover the next day is a bonus.

With that in mind, I'd go for something you wouldn't normally be able to have during your regular socialising time. Splash out a bit, it's your 21st. A good wine (or champagne as has been previously suggested) is ideal. I would suggest a medium German white, but that's my preference. If you can find a nice medium-sweet red, they can be lovely but hard to find.

If wine isn't your thing (you don't know if you don't try) then there's been a few suggestions on good spirits as well. People have suggest rum but in my experience that's the only spirit I tried that, when I drank enough, actually made me forget what the heck I did. I used to enjoy Southern Comfort, but again this is all personal preference. While I'm not a whisky drinker (can't really stand them normally) if you want to go that route I suggest a reasonably ages Scottish single malt. Glenfiddich has been suggested already, I believe.

Anyway, Happy Birthday and have a great time. :)

Try out a few sampler packs of beers from your local microbreweries; they're always better than the shitty mass-produced beer that the United States is infamous for. If you want something specific, I'm pretty sure you should be able to find Blue Buck at any reasonably-sized American liquor store. Sam Adams is also a good pick.

Happy birthday! I believe it is traditional to get a bottle of champange, but may I also recommend a whiskey, a proper whiskey mind you not Jack Daniels. I would suggest a bottle of Johnny Walker Black Label if you can get that over the pond, it's not overly expensive and well worth it.

Glenlivet, or Glenfiddich, both are delicious.

For beer, try Guinness or Okocim, for dark beers, or, well, just about anything for a lighter beer. Just buy lots if you prefer a lighter beer, rather than a heavy one.

JD's and Crown Royal are both pretty delicious, and I'd suggest you try both at some point.

The #1 pick for me remains absinthe, if you can get REAL absinthe, not the cheap liquor store knockoff shit, which is horribly overpriced.

Happy 21st, us Canadians are lucky and don't have to wait that long.
