Super Stardust HD for the PS3. its just so damn addictive, cant remember the amount of times ive meant to play something but ive ended up just launching Stardust instead and spending several hours playing it.

But if i had to choose from the "mainstream" games, i really cant figure out what to choose. Now that i think about it, i cant think of any game that would deserve the GOTY award. Either ive melted my brain while playing Stardust or then there really hasnt been any games this year that would be in some way different from the mass.

Is this "Game of the Year" in the GameSpy sense? What are the criteria supposed to be? (Because they just seem to use "Whatever we kinda liked".)

Because of the way games pricing works for AAA titles I never play any of them in their year of release anyway, so I have no idea which of the obvious contenders really wins. My game of the year so far has been Armadillo Run, but even that was released in 2006.

Lets not forget Hellgate

I think the toss up will be between Halo, Bioshock, and Hellgate.
The big media spinners almost always win GotY
You did not just...

Hellgate London...my god that game is going to be awesome. Having MMO elements mixed into a Diablo 2 like game is badass.

But, I have to say that Mass Effect has a great chance of being GOTY in my book. The new interface for picking a dialogue line looks slick.

In terms of the depth, I can only hope that it is deeper then KotOR. But it may seem too streamline, and with only two possible outcomes. Something like Chrono Trigger would be a better avenue for BioWare to tread. Also, you can have lesbian sex in that game. I don't know if that's a plus or a minus, considering how many private parts does an actual alien have. Yuck.

Surprised that no one said Assassins Creed. Completely interactive environment, and the beautiful historical accurate cities, I'm a sucker for this game. I think I'll never see the amount of exploration that Assassins Creed has to offer in any other game. I bet I can spend the first 1 hour in the game just climbing and jumping.

I'm still a little bit questionable about the combat system though. Looks a little bit slow IMO.

Most of the GotYs are going to go to Halo 3, whether we like it or not. Thats safe to assume. But stranger things have happened.

I'm going for Halo 3 and The Orange Box for GOTY, although there should obviously be a different GOTY for each genre and platform.

Also, I'm personally hoping Bioshock doesn't get a GOTY. It was a good game, but not worth all of the over-hype.

I'm going to have to say Ratchet and Clank Future. Any game that gets a 9.4 from IGN is in serious contention for GotY.

Should we wait until the rest of the games come out this year? I don't know, just a thought......

I gave serious consideration to Ratchet and Clank Future and Overlord, but I'm beginning to think I'm bias against platformers of any kind.

If Portal doesn't win most of the Game of the Year awards this year, then I take that as proof positive that most of the game journalists in the world are on the take.

Should Portal win, or should the entire Orange Box win? Because I'm thinking that the Orange Box is pretty win.

There's a big controversy over whether a pack of games can count on its own. Something like the Metal Slug Wii anthology can count, but SnM Season One can't. It's gonna eventually be up to the reviewers...I kind of hope that OB can count on its own, but I'll acknowledge that's not how everyone sees it.

I fully believe portal is the most innovative game of the year, and should win, straight out.

Other favourites of mine this year, are..

Halo 3 [the multiplayer really shines through for me, but the campaign is weak, in my opinion]
Bioshock [it was a blast, i liked the atmosphere]
Team fortress 2 [Straight out one of the most entertaining games i have ever played. But that could be because its still quite new.]
Lost planet: [old, coming out in january i believe, but still an instant classic in my opinion]

Im biased, as i play alot of shooting games, and not a terrible ammount of anything that doesnt get the adrenaline pumping.

About Halo 3, I felt much the same, until I started my 2nd play through. The skulls, the campaign scoring, and the difficulty changes really made it work for me. I forgot how much effort Bungie puts into the design of the different difficulty levels. In terms of gameplay, playing any Halo game on Legendary is a completely different game from Heroic.

And for Lost Planet, that game lost my enthusiasm when I had to kill a mech by hand. The stumble mechanic just ruins that game, and at points makes it totally unplayable.
