So i got a virus, and used system restore to kill it off. I just looked this practice up, and found it was a bad idea, though it seemed to work.

So now most of my programs, including anti-virus don't function.

What step should i take from here? D=

Reload your system... A system restore should only be used as a last resort to save data before reload. As a side note the virus, if a well written one, is still there, happily sitting in memory while your system has no anti-virus.
if by reload, you mean restart, i tried.

Even after, nothing is working =(

System Restore doesn't wip your pc... It effectively just changes all your settings and programs to the date you chose. Sounds like you got a beast of a virus, if a system restore didn't cure it. My advice is take it to a tec guy so if it fucks up so badly your not as fault.
All it was doing was bringing up this windows antivirus 2010 prompt telling me to register to fix some other "viruses" <.< Either way, i didn't trust it. I never installed that program, if it even exists, so yeah.

there is just one thing that you can do after you're pc is fcked up by some virus...
- completely wipe your pc and re-install the OS and everything else.
(there isn't a magical program which can simply heal your pc)

Windows Antivirus 2010 is a virus [http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&source=hp&q=windows+antivirus+2010]. For what it's worth, 90% of the time when a system restore is required to get the system to boot, all it'll be good for after the restore will be getting your files back before you do a full reinstall.

I've seen Malwarebytes [http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php] (despite the suspicious title) get rid of sticky shit like Windows Antivirus before. If you want to spend a few hours trying to remove it and get your system back to a stable state, then I'd say it's your best shot.

As for best anti virus, I happen to love ESET Nod32 [http://www.eset.com/], but it's not free. For free, AVG Free [http://free.avg.com/ca-en/homepage] is just about as good.

Sometimes Windows anti-virus itself is the virus. S'what happened to me.

I suggest copying over all important files and installs for programs you like onto a seprate hard drive, re install windows and copy back over.

from what you tell us it sounds like the virus locked you out of control panel. its most likley higher up in the rank in terms of viruses.

fast question what antivirus did you use before?

There's not a whole lot you can do at this point. I would strongly recommend you reinstall your OS and all your programs. Take whatever files are absolutely vital to your continued existence from it, then purge the hard drive.

It's already night time. I need to get some sleep..

Either way, i can't use that windows repair tool, Internet Explorer isn't even working.

So why in the hell is firefox working? o.o

I tried undoing the system restore, as a guide was showing me, but now system restore isn't working either.

It directs me to the select the program to launch it deal.

It seems that rstrui.exe isn't working either, it seems to be a major part of it, for what it's worth.

Can you gather anything off of that?
