What Was Wrong With Amy Pond?

Also known as how many Ws I can get into the title.

Anyways, I'm wondering why some people were against bringing Amy back for a second season. I rather liked Amy's character, and it was kinda vital for her to still be involved, lest the Doctor cease to exist.

I make the comparison with Rose, who did come back for a second season as well. A lot of people seemed to like her, while I thought she was vapid and incredibly rude to anyone not the Doctor, even his other companions. So much people liked her that they started hating on Martha and Donna for not being Rose.

I'm wondering if this is a symptom of people still not over Rose that they hate Amy, or if it is because they realized that having a character for more than one season might be a bad idea.

But those are my perspectives. I like Amy, and I love the dynamic she shares with the Doctor and Rory.

Do you like her and would enjoy it if she stayed on a bit longer as a companion? Or do you not like her, and why?

Captcha: Two Cents Worth.

I guess so.

I didn't like Martha and Donna, because they both had less interesting dynamics with the Doctor than Rose. (Well, Donna got interesting towards the end.)

I am an Amy Pond fan, though not so much Rory. I find all the storylines celebrating him, or relying on how much Amy loves him more than the Doctor, to be almost intolerable.

It may have something to do with
the way they kept "killing" either Amy or Rory in every episode. The first time Rory died and came back to life, it was cool. The next 10 times either he or Amy was temporarily dead or believed to be dead, not so much. It's a testament to how much this happened that I'm honestly not sure whether or not that's an exaggeration.

Other than that, I liked Amy, quite a bit in fact. Donna was awesome towards the end, too. In fact, Rose was my least favorite of all of the new series companions, with the possible exception of that one dude they picked up on Dalek and dropped the next episode. Yes, I am saying I prefer all the one off companions, like that chick from the Easter special, to Rose.

For all of the new companions the one that I've disliked the most is probably Rose. She had some of the best writing and story lines in my opinion and just came off as whinny and annoying most of the time. Martha has probably been my favorite. It just seemed like she had the most Independence and voice from the Doctor. Donna towards the end was interesting as well.

The problem with Amy is that she's too damn hot and keeps distracting me from what's happening in the show :p

The Doctor: Blah blah wibbly wobbly timey wimey exposition
Amy: *Just hanging out in the background*
The Doctor: And that's what we have to do to save the world. Again.
Me: Wait, what just happened? I was busy ogling the eye candy. Again.

She was just kinda...There, y'know? Not contributing, not taking away, but always...There.

She was very hot though. *Insert euphamism involving sonic screwdriver*

Amy was annoying... at first. The main problem is that she was trying to be strong, but failed. She gets better once Rory joins the party. And Rory is awesome.

Meh. I'm just tired of sexual tension with the Doctor.
Thats why I liked Donna so much- she didn't have Time Lord cravings.

Plus the whole... having to make every companion SUPER IMPORTANT. Why can't they just be normal?

I did kind of love Rory though, even though he was a bit of a doormat.

I really like Amy Pond. She was interesting, and was in many ways just as strange as the doctor. She was actively involved in ways that made sense, without detracting from what the doctor was doing. Of course, ive only seen her and a bit of Rose. Maybe this means I just don't have as narrow expectations. Though I do like Amy a lot more then I like Rose.

Also, yes. Amy is super hot. Gotta admit that.

I like Rory, I didn't like her. She's seemed a bit bland.
But I did like Martha and Donna. And I hated Rose. I don't like the whole romancing the Doctor Arc, I don't think it works in the show. And Rose seemed even more important than the Doctor, which I really hated. It's his show, the companions are there to assist, and help move the story along as it's about him, but she just stole the show. But I really didn't like the whole of the last season anyway.

Damn you Moffet. You can write induvidual storys (I hold that Blink is one of the best episodes in Dr Who history) but you really screw up the Arcs. It's too bloody complicated. And I realise it's supposed to be, but it's also a kids show. I could just barely understand what's going on, my parent's really couldn't, and jeeze, and kids watching would have no Fucking idea.

Plus it's a really obvious arc too. Not like bad wolf, or Saxon. :/

She was alright. However I found Rory to be insanely annoying. Especially how they kept teasing me by almost killing him off but then he'd magically come back -.-

I don't know. I liked Amy. Rory, not so much, but I did like Amy.
You could be right, it could have everything to do with fans just not willing to let go.
As for me, I liked Martha, didn't like Donna so much though found her to be loud and a bit obnoxious. On the other hand, she did have a good dynamic with the Doctor though.

This.

I feel like the writers are trying to recreate the Rose x 10th Doctor romantic chemistry.

Personally, I have rather enjoyed all of the companions thus far because they all seemed to bring something new to the table. Though I have liked some companions more than others. For example:

I feel rose is my least favorite. Her appearance was so-so but that's the least of the issues. i felt as if she didn't really have much talent in acting (as such her talent was more spent as a singer which, I could see happening). But either way, in the end the writers of the show made me like her to a certain degree. But honestly, I preferred Micky to Rose.

But here is what I see differently in each companion:

Rose-the girlfriend: she catches on quickly but still needs a hand to hold but overtime forms an everlasting bond with the doctor; one that becomes "more than just friends" if ya know what I mean.

Martha- the rebound: Overall, story-wise Martha had much better qualities than Rose in many aspects. She was smarter, more independent, caught on quickly and could handle herself even if she was away from the doctor. Really, I liked Martha more than I like Rose honestly but story-wise she just had terrible timing and was never really well liked and appreciated enough from the doctor because she was just that, the rebound... Getting a bit more away from the story, her acting was pretty okay, better than Rose's in my opinion but far from professional.

Donna- the best friend: Donna has to be probably my favorite thus far because she was such a unique character. Sure she was a bit loud and did get annoying more than a couple of times, but she usually kept things light and when things did get serious you knew that there was something bad going. Story-wise: There was no complicated relationship going on between the doctor and Donna, it was a chance to get away from concentrating so much on "the bond between the doctor and his companion" and just concentrate on "the purest form of the story: What's going on in each individual episode". Really, as far as companions go Donna was the least burdensome one. She could always handle herself without the Doctor, even going so far as the take control of the situation around her and use that to her advantage. She kept the doctor in check because, out of all of the companions, she was the one most equal to the doctor. She stopped him from doing foolish things every now and again, and had enough depth to keep her interesting.

Finally you have Amelia Pond- the child: Really story-wise Amy never stopped being the little girl that waited for the doctor and that's exactly how the doctor looks at her: a child that must be kept on a semi-tight leash at all times. However, this isn't necessarily true as she usually can handle her surroundings, not becoming the leader of them but quickly adapting to them to make sure she survives. She has a good amount of character depth (more than any of the other companions) from within her story, other than that she's a lot like Donna in the respect that she can handle her surroundings and can really adapt for survival.

Overall, out of all of the companions, I've actually liked Donna the most but Amy comes up with a close second. Then after that I'll go with Martha and then Rose at the bottom. But when you look at it from the perspective that I just typed a wall of text about: none of them are really so bad, they all bring something new to the table and it all makes it very interesting.

tl;dr: each companion brings something new to the show and if you look at it that way, none of the companions are particularly bad.

After awhile, Rose got annoying. I began to hate her with passion. For Amy, though, she couldn't act her way out of a wet paper bag. The only reason I put up with her for this long was for Rory.
She also tried to sexualize the Doctor. My Doctor has no interest in sex. Stop it, Moffat.

All the recent ones have had there good moments, but I think I'm in a huge minority when I say that my favorite was Martha. I liked how, though she very clearly had a big thing for the Doctor (Tennant Era who wouldn't?), they didn't feel the need to make a huge deal out of it all the time. Which made it all the more poignant at the points when it did come up how he was completely oblivious because he still wasn't over Rose. She was smart and capable, but not unrealistically so and it was always consistent (although I'm one of the many people who loves Rory, I do have to raise my eyebrows at all the times he's been a bumbling doormat one minute, then an absolute badass the next).

So yeah, loved Martha, like Amy and Rose, thought Donna was ok.

As for the secondaries: Rory is awesome if inconsistent, Mickey was ok, River was a good idea but ultimately overused... but none compare to Capt. Jack Harkness. Seriously, bring him the fuck back Moffat! The dynamic between him and the Doctor was just perfect.

Of course he is. The universe tried to erase him at one point. And it ended up dying.

OT: I've got no problem with Amy. Yeah, I do like Rose a lot, but I could say the same about every New Who companion, to be honest. I even liked Mickey for the short time that he was a part of the TARDIS crew. As for Martha and Donna, they're great companions as well, and both have their own achievements that raise them up to legendary status.

I think The Master of all people said it best when referring to Martha: "Such a disappointment, this one. In the days of old, Doctor, you had companions who could absorb the Time Vortex. This one's useless." And then she managed to spread the legend of the Doctor across the whole planet and pretty much beat you single-handed. Who's useless, again?

I think every companion really has some sort of amazing moment that makes them unique. For Rose, it was becoming the Bad Wolf and destroying the Dalek Emperor's fleet. For Martha, it was the above moment. For Donna, it was becoming the Doctor-Donna, inadvertantly creating Meta-Crisis Ten, and defeating Davros' fleet. For Amy, it was giving birth to the woman who was destined to marry and kill the Doctor. You can argue that this makes Rose and to some extent Donna a couple of Mary Sues, but that's up to your own interperetation of the companions.

I could imagine it happening for the 50th anniversary. Meta-Crisis Ten, Eleven, and Rory berating him for flirting with Amy. I'm envisioning three simultaneous "Stop it!" exclamations at the very least.
