What Would You Do?

Inspired by the apparent conspiracy angle of the upcoming Godzilla 2014, this is an odd conundrum. Imagine, if you will, that you are head of an agency whose job is to bury incidents involving giant monsters. To make it easier to swallow, until now said incidents have been isolated, and easily buried. Without warning, however, one of the monsters attacks a significant population center. While not a major city like LA or New York, there are enough witnesses that sweeping it under the rug is significantly harder. What do you do? Do you go public with the knowledge that your department has known about the creatures for years? Do you fight to keep them under wraps? Consider the potential fallout of whatever decision you make when you answer.

Do what Michael Bay would do and just forget it ever happened. Easy peasy.

Or MIB could just neuralize everyone in the world at the same time through the television like they did in the cartoon.

I think if I were the president, and I did not have Michael Bay or MIB to back me up, I would just deal with the situation without saying anything. News is going to get out anyway, but there's no need to give everyone information like that as it's happening. Wait until you either kill it or things calm down to start telling people stuff otherwise they are just going to go into full panic mode.

If there is no containing it, then there is no containing it. That doesn't mean you have to tell people everything. Act as surprised as anyone else, roll out your anti-monster jets, and just pretend that normal ordnance works just as well on giant lizards as it does on people and buildings.

I'm going to steal a page from "Monster Hunter" (a book series you people should all read!) and blame it on a terrorist attack. Not just any terrorist attack though...the people in the vicinity were hit by massive explosions (hence all the destruction) and nerve gas, which caused hallucinations in the population.

Any leaked videos will either be immediately shut down or "proven" as a horrible hoax by some people wanting to capitalize on a national tragedy. The shame in some people...*tsk tsk

I'm Swedish, so I'd follow our tradition of putting on a musical number that blamed it all on gay men.

This is how I imagine Swedish parliament.

Given my beliefs on government and transparency... I can only imagine I've been waiting for the perfect time to tell everyone about the monsters. I'd absolutely let everyone know.

*at a public press conference*

*tries to talk it over with his lawyer, which is being heard through podium speaker*

"Wait a minute... Let me get this straight... Are you telling me that everyone already knows the secret I'm trying to hide about the existence of giant creatures that may or may not be coming from the sea, presumably from the Pacific area since they have yet to figure out that they also come out of the Atlantic and Indian sea area as well? ...Well, then I don't have to tell them anything new then, do I? Exactly! Now, all I have to do is not tell them that certain events during the second World War as well as certain smaller events that happened during the Korean war AND the War on Terror cover-up are, in fact, linked to the rising sighting of said giant creatures that we have been trying to cover up for over 50 years and this little press conference will go as smoothly as my wife's-"

*realizes that everyone in the room overheard everything I just said*

"Shit... Did not see this one coming..."

*tries to think of something quick*

"I actually have no idea what's going on... I'm just speculating on all this... I will not rule anything out... I will also not be taking any questions until threat levels go pass red... Thank you..."

*tries to leave the scene as fast as possible*

"What giant monster?" :)

This is probably the best course of action. You certainly can't ignore it or try to brush it off as something else or people will riot. At the same time you can't spill everything to the public or you'll create needless panic. What you'd need the public to do is take the situation seriously and seek refuse somewhere without getting in the crossfire. You need them to trust the military that they can handle it.

Whether or not they can handle it is another question.

While this is indeed the best course of action in OPs hypothetical, this sort of thing always makes me wonder. Why doesn't normal ordnance work? The sort of munitions that can punch through feet of steel shouldn't struggle with biological matter. Some do this better (like in Pacific Rim, where it does, but Jagers are better at it, plus those beasties at least have the alien defence). But something like Godzilla, essentially just a big Earth lizard, there doesn't seem to be any reason why a couple of Mavericks or Hellfires wouldn't ruin its day and at the very least leave it bleeding out on a Manhattan street.

Being a competent leader I would have already anticipated that the monsters will not obligingly continue to remain in isolated locations - I would have conferred with my employer and put in place a contingency plan for this very scenario. Resources will need to be made available for civic defence in locations that are most likely to be hit (and Tokyo - for obvious reasons). There's money to be made with monster insurance, hunting licenses, and exploitation of the creature. Or - ahem - work that needs to be done on protecting such a rare specimen.

I would also be very clear about why the news about giant monsters needs to be withheld in the first place. I can't imagine a more pointless mission for an entire agency without further information. I don't buy the idea of mass panic at the news - but I can imagine anger at a government that is paralyzed by wanting to withhold information as opposed to making reasonable preparations.
