What WRPGs are good?

This is actually in response to the 'What JRPGs are good?' thread. Personally, I see RPGs as RPGs. I actually won't get into the whole WRPGs considered to be 'RPGs' and Japanese developed RPGs labelled JRPGs on this one just yet.

This is not just about your favorite WRPGs of all time, or which one is the best. This is a thread discussing WRPGs in general. Not only which ones are good, but also which ones you believe everyone should avoid, which are okay, and short reviews there of.

While a three word post about your enjoyment over Fallout 3/Oblivion and how you believe it was 'awesome' would be fine otherwise, it doesn't invoke discussion. I would like to know specifically why you thought the WRPG in question was good, such and such a WRPG was terrible, and anything at all in between.

Are there any WRPGs coming out soon that interest you?

What would you like to see in your ideal WRPG?

I"ll start by saying Jade Empire, I dug the anicent Chinnese setting. It had a great combat system with some cool fist fighting and magical styles. The story wasn't bad either. Only othe WRPGS i played were Oblivian and Fallout 3, tried to get into Morrowing fir the Xbox but just couldn't dut to some clunky controls and my poor sense of direction.

Coming out soon? Well only Mass Effect 2 but I really not that hyped about it.

I enjoyed alot Mass Effect, it was a great game and all, but I enjoyed much more KOTOR and Baldur's Gate(both from Bioware.)

Other than that...I liked alot Morowind,Fallout 2, KOTOR, Baldur's Gate, Oblivion(only with mods!) and Diablo 2(yes its a RPG so don't bother Abedeus).

But my biggest complain with WRPG's is the sandbox world. Unless its really good I get bored half way, low attention span and the feeling that I get that I'm not doing anything relevant puts me off the game. And theres some WRPG's that only become good with mods or these days, DLC.(Fallout 3 and Oblivion)

Which is why I prefer JRPG's they more linear and sometimes they give you some time to explore if you want to.

The only 2 RPGs I've ever really gotten into are Mass Effect and Diablo (as another poster said, yes it is an RPG, albeit a much more action-focused one).

I loved the story and combat from Mass Effect. I'm really not a big fan of turn based games, I just find them really boring. Definitely looking forward to ME2, even though they for some reason decided to add RELOAD to the combat system. Why, Bioware? Why?

I tried to get into KOTOR, but my god that game bored me to death. Star Wars + turn-based combat + sloooow progression = ZzzzzZZZZzzz

Now you're becoming redundant. I originally made my thread due to the 'what rpgs are good' thread that completely singled out WRPGs.

I kid, I kid. You are a fun member to see in discussions and are not redundant at all.

I have not played a western rpg in a very long time. I would say the Zork or Monkey Island series, since the term 'rpg' has been castrated over the past two generations. However those are both technically 'point and click adventure games', and zork could also fit under 'text adventure' comfortably. Other than that, I have played very old DnD computer games and a few other wretchedly old ones. Didn't they make a Hitchhikers game back then? Oh wait, that was more like a text adventure as well. Blast.

Fallout 1 and 2 were great. The story, characters, gameplay, all of it was great for the time. 2 was better for me because I am sandbox happy, and that time limit in 1 and I vowed to killed eachother one day. I am probably going to get Mass Effect before 2 comes out, and Alpha Protocal along with Dragon Age: Origin look nice. Kotor2 was OK but short. I am trying to get into Bioware more after Bethesda's massive Fallout 3 fail. But I must confess, if Brink is sci fi, I will probably be on that like Yahtzee on Portal covered in Branston pickles.

Knights of the Old Republics 1 and 2, both had terrific stories. The characters really felt empathetic, and the combat was pretty good as well, even if it relied on random chance a little some times.
Finished 1 on light side, but not dark. KOTOR, Mass Effect, Oblivion and Fallout always seem to be the recurring suspects when people talk 'WRPGs'. I'm interested to see if people can name quite a few others that they really liked.

For a more straightforward and enjoyable experiance their is Jade Empire for the original Xbox. The game had very fun combat and great voice acting, while your party members really only served to kneel down and boost your stats it was a real fun game to play if a bit short. I like how your fighting styles were actual weapons though I feel the final boss was a bit too difficult on the highest difficulty. Some things are really cliche but somethings are unique to. I never fully finished the game (like 100%) but still a solid game.
Jade Empire has been sitting on my shelf next to Fable, and I've played neither yet. I'll look into those soon.

Hmm, never heard of it, but it looks interesting enough. I'll check that too.

I can remember that game being pretty good. Anyone else here played it?

Fallout 2 - Painfully slow in the early game, but by mid-game it really starts to heat up, and by the end you will be having fun blowing people. The game is a sick thrill.

KOTOR1 - Great story, very good plot twist, excellent characters (Something bioware decided to kick in later games, absent in mass effect.)

I am hoping that obsidian succeeds with alpha protocol, and I believe they will with all the side work they have done for other IP's.

WRPGs are often more freeing, allow you to be what you want (TES being the leader there), and being able to move out of the way. Skill is more directly involved also, and there are more elements, like stealth.

This conversation pretty much revolves around Bethesda and Bioware - Jade Empire, KoTOR, Mass Effect, Oblivion, and Fallout 3 all kick ass. Lionhead is worth mentioning, but as good as Fable was, the second one was a letdown.

Jade Empire has a wonderful setting, some brilliant characters and one of the best stories I've ever experienced in a game. The number of main-quests make the game pretty big if you want a longer experience, and there are a wealth of side-missions. It looks gorgeous, especially for a previous-generation game; there are many, many different locales and on top of all that it's got the BioWare pedigree for voice-acting and story telling. And then, on top of all this, it's actually got a pretty awesome fighting system? It's no Ninja Gaiden, but it's a lot more exciting for me than even the nearly-realtime-turn-based combat of KOTOR.

I don't really see many people mention this game on forums like these - I know there are a few, but people nearly always mention KOTOR and the Elder Scrolls and Fallout series' - and I think it's a shame. The game nearly always seems to be overlooked, but it shouldn't be. It's very nearly a perfect game.

Oh, I have it now. There was a western rpg I noticed on a computer store shelf a week or two ago called DrakenSang. I have no idea if it is a good rpg or not, but it does not appear to be an mmorpg and I may buy it in the future once the price wittles down.

Two rpgs I really enjoyed that haven't been mentioned already are the Witcher and Vampire The Masquerad: Bloodlines, both despite being very linear in some parts, are excellent rpgs.
