What's so great about WoW?

I'm not in any way a stranger to what WoW is, how much people play it, or the culture that has come to be associated with it. A few of my friends played it constantly, and sometimes when over at their houses I would watch; I've seen countless videos and Leroy Jenkins ripoffs; I even tried it out myself once on a 10 day free trial I downloaded.

It's not that I don't like Mummorpepeggers--I loved Diablo 2 and its LoD expansion. I played that for hours each day for a long time. I guess I just never really saw what other people did in WoW that you couldn't get better from other games. The universe didn't really seem that epic, and the people my friends told me they met on there mostly seemed uninteresting. The raids, the text-filled screen... the fact that it was so huge, but seemingly empty, made me reject it.

So now I'm asking you well-informed and literate (and hopefully older than 13 years old) escapists, what is it that you think is so great about WoW? Were/are you addicted, and why?

Other than the fact that it's basically the most polished MMORPG you can find?

I always did like the trolls. They were cool.

I tried the trial and found it boring. I even asked this website whether I should persevere and if it would improve and got a resounding "no."

It can be really immersive and good fun, especially if you play with friends.

If you want to put the hours in.

Hmm... Well, I liked helping others level up. And by others, I mean my boyfriend, my brother-in-law, my other friends, and my brother-in-law's friends. Twas fun. They kept popping up alts, and since I only played my warrior, it was Arugal runs after Arugal runs (for instance. Pun intended).

Eventually, I just stopped. I had my fun, and that was it. I played roughly three years, maybe a bit more.

I've tried it, it seems more like people get addicted because of how much people like to get to the next objective, one more level, one more quest, etc... and before long, an hour has passed.

Immersion did it for me. The amount of detail Blizzard put in that game, the characters, the animations, the music (dear gods the music), the environments, the story-lines, everything. It all seamlessly blended together into the most immersive gaming universe (on par with Half Life 2) I have ever played in. No MMO, heck barely any other game, ever came close to what Blizzard did with WoW.

I still long back to it every now and then, even though it's been over a year ago since I've last played, and I won't be going back. But I still listen to the music on a daily basis, I mean:
Fuck me silly and call me a dodo, that is gorgeous! And it fits the amazing area of Grizzly Hills so incredibly well. The pine forest, the bears fishing in the river (they actually made them do that, how awesome is that?), trappers at work, it's absolutely perfect. I thought the Outlands were already brilliant, with the stunning Marsh and the gorgeous Terokkar Forest. But then Northrend came along, that's a goddamn work of art.

SW:TOR, the next MMO I'll play, has some big shoes to fill on the immersion front. But I have faith in BioWare.

That's a good question.

I think the free MMOs are better.
Also, did you know they do a Leroy joke in both My Name Is Earl and How I Met Your Mother?

[sub]And I think you spelled mumorpuger wrong.
I probably did too, but still[/sub]
No, but I'll look that up in a bit.

And yes, I probably did spell it wrong

i never answers these "whats so great" questions. Because the person asking the question has already made up their mind about the subject, so why should i waste time explain was i like abou it? its stupid

Yeah, it does seem like a futile attempt however; the best part of the game for me was the social side of it. Being able to communicate with people while playing was nice.

I've already made up my mind, but the point of discussion was that I was curious what other people liked about the game. You're not trying to convince me to like it, you're trying to convince me why YOU like it.

I think Leeroy Jenkins (that's how you spell it, not Leroy) is almost enough to make me want to play it, but I just don't have the time for something like WoW. Plus, it did look boring when I gave it a go at a friend's.

You mean what was so great about it?

For me it was making online friends to play and chat with. It was trying to beat difficult dungeons and encounters, and having to try and try again until success. It was having a populated world where you could see people in any zone, ask or give advice for tough quests. It was having amazing rewards for putting in time and effort (as in, exaulted BG rep for epics - <3 Lobotomizer).

There's still good things about it, but you might have to look a little deeper.

I could never get into WoW because it wasn't that challenging in the first 20 levels and the combat became really stale. I know this maybe different in later levels but none of the classes seemed that different at least in the early levels. The one thing I hated the most is probably how "alone" you were in those early levels. I've played FF11 and none of those were really a problem for me to care. The gameplay always entertaining and was increasing to be entertaining as you rose through your levels. Everything in the game you accomplished was and felt extremely rewarding, unlike wow where you basically just checked off what you did rather than enjoy the quest's story and journey. The only thing I liked about WoW the FF11 lacked in was flow between battles where you didn't have to rest, the difficulty wasn't discouraging when you started and the quests actually gave you at least some dirrection where FF11 it was basically like solving a riddle that even when solved doesn't make sense. I guess the PvP too but I prefer PvE but that's just my opinion.

I have no idea what's so great about WoW, but it still managed to get me addicted. I have no idea why I played so much, when I look back now.
