With video game movies being in the gaming news lately (Warcraft gets a new writer, MGS gets a confirmed Snake as lead, Uncharted loses its second director, not to mention the new Silent Hill movie coming out), I've been wondering what would be a good game to base a movie off of.
Personally, and this might sound odd at first, think Fallout might be a good place to start. Now, hear me out on this, I know Fallout doesn't have the most fantastic story. It can be pretty good at points, but there are loads better out there. However, the one thing pretty unique to Fallout is its world. Not many people really do post apocalypse that much in any form of entertainment and the last good movie we got from it was Mad Max 2 (or 3, haven't seen it yet). I think that would help give a Fallout movie a good start, but there is obviously going to have to be a lot more to give it an edge. Another thing is that it already has basic plot lines to use as a starting point. One would be the Enclave, a semi-recurring baddy in the series. They already have a general outline layed out for who they are so (in theory) adapting it into a script will be easier than making it up from scratch. And, of course there is more than that you could use. Super Mutants, Brotherhood of Steal, raiders, etc. can all be used as plot elements, whether they be major or minor, and you easily use more than just one. Now I don't think that a movie should be tied to one single game, but taking central plot elements from the games could work to. One example I could think off of the top of my head is a situation where the Enclave has taken control over a large area of the country and the protagonist works to unite the different factions of the Wasteland to destroy them. Or maybe the main protagonist is a super mutant who is starting to go insane as he slowly remembers what happened to him in his previous life before being dipped into the FEV vats. Just things I'm throwing out but I think that there is lots of potential for a film from the Fallout universe.
Anyways, what about you guys? What do you think would be great for the first good video game film adaption?
