What's the game with the most potential for a good movie?

With video game movies being in the gaming news lately (Warcraft gets a new writer, MGS gets a confirmed Snake as lead, Uncharted loses its second director, not to mention the new Silent Hill movie coming out), I've been wondering what would be a good game to base a movie off of.

Personally, and this might sound odd at first, think Fallout might be a good place to start. Now, hear me out on this, I know Fallout doesn't have the most fantastic story. It can be pretty good at points, but there are loads better out there. However, the one thing pretty unique to Fallout is its world. Not many people really do post apocalypse that much in any form of entertainment and the last good movie we got from it was Mad Max 2 (or 3, haven't seen it yet). I think that would help give a Fallout movie a good start, but there is obviously going to have to be a lot more to give it an edge. Another thing is that it already has basic plot lines to use as a starting point. One would be the Enclave, a semi-recurring baddy in the series. They already have a general outline layed out for who they are so (in theory) adapting it into a script will be easier than making it up from scratch. And, of course there is more than that you could use. Super Mutants, Brotherhood of Steal, raiders, etc. can all be used as plot elements, whether they be major or minor, and you easily use more than just one. Now I don't think that a movie should be tied to one single game, but taking central plot elements from the games could work to. One example I could think off of the top of my head is a situation where the Enclave has taken control over a large area of the country and the protagonist works to unite the different factions of the Wasteland to destroy them. Or maybe the main protagonist is a super mutant who is starting to go insane as he slowly remembers what happened to him in his previous life before being dipped into the FEV vats. Just things I'm throwing out but I think that there is lots of potential for a film from the Fallout universe.

Anyways, what about you guys? What do you think would be great for the first good video game film adaption?

Actually, I'm inclined to agree with Fallout. The main lead can be anyone, due to character creation, the plot just has to be "This is a nuclear wasteland with mutations, tongue-in-cheek humor, and bad shit going down (maybe with powersuits involved).", and you can shoot it all in probably Arizona. Just make sure it has all the usual mainstays that makes Fallout good - including the humor - and it practically writes itself.

The next thing I'd say is that - dependent on your attitude...you could make either a really campy B-movie horror classic out of Extermination...or if you make the dialogue better it could reach into A-level, for having a scary atmosphere, decent action horror sci-fi plot, and research done on the gun mechanics and other important details.

Finally, I would say like a Skies of Arcadia trilogy to take you through the game. The first movie handles beginnings through to the handling of two Gigases with the Little Jack, the second gets us into the Delphinus and through the next two Gigases, and the last movie handles the rest all the way to Zelos and Ramirez.

Depends how close the movie is to the game.

Any movie that just tries to retell the same story as a game is inevitably going to end up as utter garbage or, at best, a forgettable popcorn flick.

I think you could decent movies out of Bioshock and Deus Ex, provided that they were allowed to deviate a lot from the source material.

I think Fallout would be a LOT better as a TV series. Room for tons of one-off adventure-of-the-week episodes, with a big overreaching plot of the quest to defeat The Master/save Project Purity/destroy The Enclave/whatever.

Plus, that gives the potential to swap companions in and out as needed.

I thought The Witcher had alot of potential for a good movie.

That, or maybe Alan Wake. I know it sounds crazy, but Alan Wake was (in my personal opinion) an insanely well designed game, beautifully rendered, and wonderfully written, game. I would love to see a movie adaptation made.

And then they could make American Nightmare as the sequel :)

I agree with Zhukov.

Bioshock would be awesome if you didn't just retell the story.

Perhaps if we had a look at what went down between Atlas and Ryan. See rapture being awesome and see it fall due to the splicing.

I assume that Bioshock 2 covered some of this, as it was a prequel, but I think you could cover some of the stuff which would be boring to play, and could flesh it out some.

That said, I think it's a silly idea. There's plenty of things to make films about, games aren't one of them. It's the same as making a film of a book, the film is always inferior.

Could be, and I'd like to see that too. The only reason we're just saying movie is because that's the subject in mind.

Deus Ex could work if the idea of augmentation is explored, along with other themes.

Mass Effect could work for a film series on the basis of Shepard before he/she was a commander, or following the events of 3 afterwards.

Killzone could work for movies in a way, since it's mainly sci-fi action to the core.

A left-field contender here would be Alpha Protocol if we're working from events after the game ends.

Another left-field contender here would be the Ghost Recon/Splinter Cell series.

The Witcher already has a movie. It was craaaaaaaap.

Bioshock would translate well I think. As long as they don't dumb it down for a PG rating. Isn't that part of the reason why Gore Verbinski left the project?

Hahaha. Really? I never knew that, was it only released in Poland or something?

OT: They are already doing a Deus Ex movie apparently

For those saying Fallout, enjoy:
But otherwise... I'unno, Uncharted? Alright for a decent dumb Indiana Jones type popcorn movie.
I can see Alice: Madness Returns or that franchise in general working well too.

Zone of the Enders: 2nd Runner. It's already there, with all the cutscenes and whatnot.

Mass Effect could make a good series, as can KOTOR 1/2, Planescape Torment, etc.

The key is a good world and good supporting characters.

Why does that sound crazy? I absolutely adore Alan Wake. I've only played the first DLC, but I want to play the other one and American Nightmare too. I love the light mechanics, the atmosphere, how Bright Falls almost feels like Silent Hill at night, yet in the day-time it's simply small-town America at its best. And the music, oh the music! The radios everywhere, the segment where you're on stage at the concert, it's just great. And of course, it's designed like a movie/tv-series, so there's that to help potential producers along. But I do think, given its episodic design, that it would do better as a miniseries.

Right now, I'd very much enjoy a Fallout or Dark Souls movie.

The Fallout one would be a sandwich made of scraps of awesome, layered inbetween amazing visuals and a soundtrack that does not involve Skrillex. There would be copious amounts of black humour, and it would taste like bacon chicken vanilla ice cream meat pie, and it would fizzle, snap and pop in your mouth, making you giggle like a little schoolgirl.

The Dark Souls one would look like some medieval fantasy fare, but it would soon develop into psychological horror. The first time our main protagonist dies would be well before the title crawls up on screen. The main character would die anywhere between 15 and 616 times in the movie, we'd have some laughs, we might be invited to cry once or twice, and we'd be shocked into peeing our pants and having our hair turn white a rough three to four dozen times. Also, there cannot possibly be a happy ending for everyone involved. That would just be too cheap.

Think outside the box, people! What about a movie adaptation of Tetris, done in the style of 'torture porn'? The inevitability of failure, coupled with an incresingly frenetic pace. Don't tell me that couldn't work!

Or how about an adaptation of Psychonauts, but directed in a way similar to Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind? Eh?

Oooh! A World of Warcraft movie, done in the style of Requiem for a Dream. As in: addiction causing the disintegration of one's life.

I may be a genius...

The clear winner in my head would be Dragon Age. I consider it's world to be of massive interest, and there are countless of possibilities to create stories that would rival the story of Origins. Dawn of the Seeker was a preety good story in my opinion, and i would love to see more of the kind that would explore the backstory and lore of the universe, rather than try to tie in with the story of the games.
Fallout could work in the same way, but I don't see the same kinds of possibilities as with Dragon Age.

And for the authentic dark souls experience, every five minutes the film will start again from the beginning, and the ushers will take all the money from your wallet.

As much as I love dark souls, I don't think it would make much of a movie. A dark, gritty, western medieval fantasy is a great setting for a movie, but I feel actually basing it on dark souls would be a mistake. The minimalist story probably wouldn't map too well to a film audience, and when you think about all the things that make dark souls great: A great combat system (gone), the multiplayer when the connection's strong (gone), the loneliness conveyed through atmosphere (still there, but harder for a movie), and music (still good). That doesn't leave too much. But I do agree that a setting with similar characteristics to dark souls would be good.

I think the problem with games at the moment, and movie adaptions, is that a lot of the games with high quality stories that would make good movies have a degree of choice in them, which is lost in an adaptation, eg DA: origins, DA2 (which I thought had a better story setup than origins, they just fluffed it a bit with the stupid time jumps), mass effects, the 2 deus ex games, skyrim had a pretty rubbish story, but the lore and setting could be used well, etc. And when these are adapted to movies, I think some of the quality will be lost.

I would propose bioshock 1/2 as a decent game to adapt, as the choice in the story is pretty minimal. I haven't played Spec ops: the line, but from what I hear it may have the potential to be a good movie, as the gameplay is apparently pretty standard, and it's the story and setting that makes the game.

As for MGS, who needs a movie? they're almost movies already. But seriously, I think they'd make good movies. Perhaps not MGS2, that was a bit weird, but snake eater might work. The problem would be finding an actor who can climb a ladder for long enough.

I think Assassin's Creed could actually work as a live-action, but the story would probably have to take place in the past so we could see more of the Assassin's history and such.
