That would make sense if writing was ever a hallmark of the Tomb Raider series.
That's not fair. Much like anime, plot has always been Tomb Raiders most valued asset.

Personally, I'm going to have to say... Wolfenstein: The New Order. It really was a good shooter, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. But really, at it's core, it was just a standard shooter with little aspirations. Standard 'kill the nazis' plot, standard shooting mechanics, standard level design. Well done standard, but standard none the less.

Portal. Don't get me wrong, it was fun and shit. But I didn't laugh too much at GLaDOS nor think any of the puzzles were that clever. It terms of a puzzle game, Portal 2 was way better.

But Portal just felt so...bland. So humdrum. So "Yeah, that was pretty cool for 3 hours a decade ago."

"BioShock 2" was a pretty damn OK game.

Fine enough story (if unnecessary) with solid execution.
Atmosphere was sound though definitely lacking compared to "BioShock" and the Little Sister system was a tad unbalanced but helped invest me with the little bastards.
The combat is solid for what it is, though I find myself in the minority who much preferred its predecessor's single handed approach.

A perfectly serviceable, if kinda meh, game. Still better than "Infinite" at least.

I guess maybe Dishonoured? I still go back and play it again sometimes and the DLC is actually pretty damn good but the emphasis on non lethal playthroughs being the "correct" way to play the game killed it for me.

You have so many cool toys and stuff for lethal runs and the best thing you can get for non lethal runs are fuckin chokeholds and sleep darts? I feel like i'm missing half the content, plus I never cared for the non lethal assassination methods. The entire level is based around killing this one guy now you suddenly want me to not kill this one guy? Fuck off, he's getting a sword to the dick.

Also Hitman Absolution. Not bad and definitely worth the ?5 I paid for it on a Steam sale but it could have been better. Could have been a LOT worse though so good on them.

Ehhhhhhh...

Halo? As in, all of them?

I guess that's not entirely fair. I'm not a fan of run and gun shooters in general, so the Halo series is already starting out with a handicap, so to speak. But it's alright. If I'm with a bunch of friends and they want to load up some local multiplayer, or if one of them wants someone to do co-op, I'll agree readily enough. I just won't go reaching for it on my own. I can usually enjoy myself well enough if I get a hold of a shotgun, and there are a few instances where I can remember fun occurring (usually because of rambunctious friends), but for the most part my memories of playing Halo are a big ol' haze of 'meh.'

Assassin's Creed III

I was one of those weirdos who was actually invested the on-going meta-plot involving Desmond, Abstergo, and the Assassins. After all the intrigue, mystery, and set-up, the ending was just sort of...eh. Not terrible, not great, just sort of there. It did it's job, but it was really abrupt and didn't really satisfy. And it most definitely wasn't worth all the build-up and anticipation. (Heh, heh...)

On the historical side, the setting and plot were just "okay" compared to previous outings. As an American, colonial America was just too familiar to be really interesting compared to the Crusades, Renaissance Italy, or Constantinople. And as a history teacher, the idea that the same conspicuously-robed Native American assassin was at the signing of the Declaration of Independence AND the Boston Tea Party AND the Battle of Bunker Hill AND had face-time with several Founding Fathers and this wasn't mentioned in any history book? Sure. And then there's straight-up historical error: the Boston Tea Party happened at night and was performed by the Sons of Liberty who were dressed as caricatured versions of Mohawk tribe American Indians...not in broad daylight by random rebels who were cheered-on by people on the pier while Redcoats stormed the boats and were brutally killed by a conspicuously-robed Native American assassin! Even taking into account "the history books are lying to us" conspiratorial angle of the series, it was still lame. Again, I'm an American and a history teacher who spent years teaching early U.S. history, so the statement "familiarity breeds contempt" definitely applies here. I actually really liked the parts that deal with how Conner relates to his tribe and the other non-historically-based characters, but whenever the story brushed up against real history it just came across as silly. How much of it is "familiarity breeds contempt" and how much is the actual game's fault is arguable.

I'll second that.

I've enjoyed Halo on its own terms, both single and multiplayer, but it's never come across as "amazing, awesome, epic" or any other word that the fanboys would toss around.

At the same time, it's not "terrible, bland, overrated" or any other word that the haters toss around.

It's okay. It's solid. It is what it is.

Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning

Art style was decent, combat was simple but effective, crafting and gathering was also simplistic but useful, the Fate system for character class was a nice concept, story held together but seemed rather slow at times, up until the end area and, finally, gear and loot was on par for an RPG. It did everything...not bad. Ish.

Don't get me wrong, it was a solid "foundation" game and it could've expanded into something more...but it never got the chance to do so, probably because of how mediocre it was. But I still enjoy the hell out of it.

You've got a point. The first complaint was that the "plot" had been so greatly reduced. >.>

Also, I don't play fair. You should see me corner camp.

Dragon Age Origins! The game where you form a party of plastic-weapon wielding heroes in yet another brown, generic, fantasy setting. I had fun with the game for a while, it had one really good moral choice, nobody called me evil for gutting a child in front of its screaming mother, it was fine. I had my fun with Dragon Age Origins then lost interest about 3 or 4 hours away from the end and wound up just rushing through for the end-credits. It's no Knights of the Old Republic but it was more fun than Dragon Age 2 (for me).

I disagree in "All of them" but it did remind me of my answer which is Halo 4. Halo 1 and Reach are AMAZING! Halo 2 and 5 are garbage. 3 I suppose is better than ok, but its overrated, but 4, I truly feel no strong opinion either way. It didn't make me mad and I overall enjoyed it, but it wasn't anything special and certainly a step down from Reach.

Yeah that's Tomb Raider 2013 in a nutshell. That game was the digital equivalent of a shrug.

Currently it's The Division. It's not bad it's just... eh. It kind of feels like Ubisoft decided to make an early access title.

Also this:

I was going to say Virtua Quest since it was okay enough for me to play more than once with two of those times for Let's Play reasons... After much though, I think Cinderella Escape! takes the current cake thus far... A 3D puzzle porn game where you help Cinderella escape using only her legs... The story's okay, the twist was okay, and the gameplay was the most okay overall...

Other than that, series-wise, I guess Peggle would be the addictive kind of "okay" in this situation...

I bet those hair physics took a lot of effort and time for somebody.

Also, I doubt the same people who did the writing were the ones responsible for implementing said hair physics. It's not a zero-sum game.

Oh God yes. Totally agreed.

Like you say, it did everything okay. (Personally I loved stealth-killing dudes and using the fate execution mechanic... thing.)

My problem was that there was just too bloody much of it. Too big a map, too many sidequests and don't even get me started on the optional dialogue. I actually ended up finishing the entire game during a release drought and it felt like a digital death march by the end.

I just want everyone to know that I typed "digital death march" before Guppy posted.

So there!

Agreed. Actually just started a playthrough yesterday.

Here a bunch of fun death toys. But if you use them we will rap you across the knuckles.

Funny thing is, the talking heart on its own would have been enough to discourage me from killing dudes.

"Alright, time to stab a ************."
"He has taken to feeding a stray dog every evening. He named her Billy."
"... with a sleep dart. I shall stab him with a sleep dart."

"Okay, just kill this one guard and I'm in.
"When not on duty he searches the drowned district for his sister, missing two weeks now."
"Perhaps a chokehold. Then I shall need to find a place to put him so the rats don't get him.

Most recently probably Enslaved: Odyssey to the West. I like the characters and their interactions a fair bit and I enjoyed the setting, but ultimately the gameplay was at best a meh and the story ended on an unsatisfying note.

Verdict: It was alright I guess. A sequel would be neat since there was lots of room for improvement that could elevate it from alright to great, but otherwise it'll probably just end up being forgotten and I'm fine with that.

How so? I've played through dishonored twice once on a murderous frenzy and a second time ghosting it Thief style, both times were a blast and I never felt discouraged from either playstyle. If anything I wish the game had given more non-lethal and stealth related tools as it often felt the killing path was the one with far more options. Meanwhile if it's the ending you're worried about you only get the high chaos ending if you've done a lot of killing. You can safely murder your targets and still get low chaos, just try not to also murder every guard and servant on your way as well. Besides which the high chaos ending is awesome so I don't know why people try to avoid it.

When Dishonored 2 is close to release I plan to replay the game again doing a 'Punisher' playthrough, where I let the heart decide whether someone gets to live or die. Tell me something good about someone? They live. Tell me something bad? They die. It'll be fun to see how things go. Also the worse the crime, the more inventive the death I'll have to think up for someone.
