The title is pretty straight forward, but it basically means Whats the worst advice you've given/been given or just heard from someone.

To me, the worst advice I ever was given is if my breaks go out, I should put hte car in reverse and try to drive backwards to slow myself down till I eventually stop.
This given by my friend who said hitting the emergency break would send me through the windshield and kill me.

Worst I gave: when you see a snow drift forming near the road, if its small enough, you should drive over it and break it up for other drivers.
Its somethjing a family friend does that I thought was weird.

So, Escapists, discuss. And if you dont have a car, or have never had any bad advice given, just think of what you think is bad advice that seems to be common knowledge or you heard others did in an situation.

*DISCLAIMER* I searched bar'd this and asked someone and they said they never saw one, but if its been done, I'm sorry.

EDIT: I am not dumb, I do not follow my friend's advice. This is about driving adivce you've RECEIVED or GIVEN, NOT whether you FOLLOW it. Also, I have an automatic, so dont talk to me about gear shifting.

I don't ever really give serious driving advice. There are alot of jokes lobbed around involving drifting around corners and 88mph but they are only ever made when hanging around with people I know and they know I'm being sarcastic about it anyways.

Worst advice ever given about driving?
That would probably be any of the advice I give to you. Anything I say disregard it, in fact... disregard this post!
-Tabs<3-
-edit- Seriously, I look at bicyclists and think "woo, 500 points!"

Reminds me of the advice my uncle gave me when I first started driving.

The person/object most likely to survive the crash has the right of way, no matter what the sign or light says

@XxRyanxX Well, I try. XD

"If your windscreen is frozen, pour boiling water over it."

My old driving instructor (!) once stopped me from using my wing mirrors while I attempted to reverse around a corner because they "only show you where you WERE". I cancelled all my future lessons with her after that.

If you try to put the car in reverse when going forwards, it will either refuse to engage (with a lot of loud grindy noises) and/or you will bugger the gearbox and clutch! Pulling / hitting the emergency brake at speed wont do a lot unless you do it hard enough, in which case the rear wheels may lock. Either way, the results would be negligible or worsen the situation - however there is no way you should be thrown through the window if you do that.

I sincerely hope the person giving you this advice doesn't actually have a drivers licence because he/she sounds like an utter pillock! I suppose they also think you cant get pregnant if you do it standing up.

Someone (who DOES have a licence!) once suggested that I remove the keys from the ignition to stop the rest of the bunch swinging against my knees when driving. Think about that one for a while...

Several people, usually girls / women, have tried telling me that you don't need to use the clutch when changing gear at speed.

Drinking and driving isn't bad, it's only bad if you are already drunk but you can still drink while you are driving. I forget where I heard this, but it wasn't said to me, I just overheard it.

He does. He's my friend, he's just being him. he's actually a really good driver, though I dont know if he's ever tried it.

besides, I didnt say I took it to heart. The point of bad advice is you (hopefully) dont follow it.

Worst advice?

"Everyone knows the red ones go faster". Or maybe that's the best advice, I can never remember.

Any advice given in YELLING!!!

I tend not to listen, no matter how good it may be it's instantly transcribed in my head as bad. This goes to parents teaching their own children how to drive mostly.

'Gears are for going, brakes are for slowing' from my instructor. Wrong! When slowing you should cycle down through the gears to remain in full control at all times.

To be fair, you can change gear without the clutch in an emergency but you have to match the revs exactly. Not as simple as they seem to make it sound!

my example isnt really bad advice, but when i went for my Ls i had to do a multiple choice test, one of the questions i was unsure of the answer so i thought about what my parents do in this situation. that ended up being the only question i got wrong.

where are these blind spots? i look over my shoulder before changing lanes but when i look in the mirrors i dont see anything i cant see if you knowwhat i mean. like for me to miss a something by looking in the mirror it seems the car would have to be like 30cm long or something.

True that. My dad would get all wound up while I was driving. Even if I was calm and collected he would get all tense and correct me with a very loud voice, which in turn would frighten and distract me and thereby make the whole situation more dangerous.

Seriously, just chill. Whatever is going wrong will sure as hell not be improved by yelling.
