As stated in the previous thread I am considering studying abroad in Australia. I was looking at two cities Brisbane and the Gold Coast. However it seemed a lot of people had an issue with the Gold Coast. Can you explain to me what some people hate this city a lot?
It seems fun. Lots to do and many consider it the party capital of Oz.
That depends on what your going there for. If by "study" you mean hanging out with other young adults and raising hell, that's probably the place for you. If by "study" you mean actually studying, well then it's not the place you want to be because of everyone else acting that way around you.
I haven't been there, but I'm making a guess simply based on how people choose locations to study in the US. For example in Connecticut we have a number of big universities, and let's just say the areas they are in are reviewed according to the attitude of the students that attentd there and fill those towns and areas.
It's also noteworthy that you'll find politics are also an issue. Theere are very few truely "conservative" academic institutions anymore unlike what the movies imply. Almost all of them are massively liberal in their attitudes and falculty and the "save the world" students are the norm rather than a fringe. This by and large spills over into the area
where your going to see tons of "rallies", stunts, and wierd activities. Students deciding they want to feed the homeless for a week or whatever, means that a lot of homeless people gravitate there for food, and when the "event" ends you've still got tons of bums running around causing trouble (heartless as it is to say).
To put things into perspective, one big issue I'm aware of in Australia (vaguely) is the issue of Aboriginals sniffing gasoline fumes to get high and hallucinate. I've read some stuff on it over a period of time. There are even issues with merchants doing things like mixing it with liquor and refridgerating it apparently for consumption of the natives. There is apparently a movement to produce odor-free gasoline to prevent this, which of course has lead to some backlash based on this apparently being of cultural importance. You'd have to ask an Aussie for all the details, but let's say that Gold Coast is a liberal party town, even if you agreed with the issue would you still want to be around when a bunch of college students decide to invite a bunch of natives over for an apologist petrol huffing rally or whatever? For that matter would you want to even live in the area? (most people want quiet).
No offense to anyone, as I said I don't know the area, this is just a guess based on what was said and words like studying and hearing "it's a real party town". In party town drunk students run around throwing fake blood at buildings screaming "no nuuukes! nukes are murder" and then videotaping it so likeminded students can think it's awesome and the like. Some of the most "WTF" police stories you've heard about probably happened in "party towns".
