Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time. The gameplay was fantastic, and the development and dialogue between the Prince and Farah compliments it very well. The game was very short, though; I beat it twice in one day once.

Obligatory mention: Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory, Abe's Odyssey, FFVII, Sly Cooper, Sheep Raider, and Jak.

Portal only mentioned 4 times on the first page? Wow.

Impressive. I'm surprised.

Anyway, while it's very difficult to come up with just one, if I didn't, I'd be copy pasting a text file every time I see this thread come up (ie: at least once a week, and I'm not online as much as I used to be.)

So for today, I'm gonna go with Braid, because I just played it for several hours straight, completed it, and was thoroughly amazed.

Sam & Max (Series 1 in particular, seeming as whilst series 2 did finally allow you to run it did have some crappy moments, such as the homoerotic vampire one)
...you do realise that Sam and Max Hit the Road came before the two series? I'd say that while they were fun, the first game was much better.

...although DotT is better than all of them.[/opinion]

Half-Life 2
System shock 2
Bioshock
Ninja Gaiden Black
Civilisation X (doesn't really matter which one)
Advance wars
Sonic 2
Panzer Dragoon Orta
Grim Fandango
Monkey Island
Thief 2
Street Fighter 3: Third Strike

EDIT: Though it must be said, if Chess didn't exist Civ would be the greatest game of any kind period.

I keep a Notepad text file around for just such an occasion:

1. Rome: Total War
2. Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri
3. Rise of Nations
4. Tropico
5. Hearts of Iron II
6. The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion
7. The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind
8. Railroad Tycoon II
9. Mount & Blade
10. Empire: Total War

Empire debuted at #2 but I dropped it to #10 pending the fix to the naval AI and campaign crashbugs. If it doesn't get those fixes I'll drop it further, if it does get them I'll put it back just behind Rome.
Yes! Alpha Centauri! I loved that game!

1 -- Half-Life series, which pretty much includes portal because there's a friggin Aperture Science ship in Episode 3! I especially loved HL2E2, best bossfight e- WAIT NO. NIHILANTH!!
2 -- Total Annihilation/Supcom/Spring WHATEVER they're all exactly the same.
One of the best RTSes I've played. It was simple, but the battles were total nonsense and it was one of the first RTSes where you had to be watching 50 places at once and constantly pumping out units if you expected to not have the CORE player on the other side of the field carve you a new robotic asshole with his 50 Krogoths, FUCKING KROGOTHS! I of course played ARM, which instantly makes me a nub.
3 -- Fallout 3
I can't stop playing it because of my simple mindedness, I.E I JUST WANT TO GIB LOTS AND LOTS OF ZOMBIES OVER AND OVER.
4 -- Dawn of War Series
Another one of the best RTSes I've played. Gameplay was very solid.
5 -- KOTOR 1 AND ONLY KOTOR 1.
KOTOR2 was nowhere near as good as KOTOR1 was, KOTOR1 combined action, storytelling and force lightning to make a good RPG, I think it will be one of the only good Star Wars RPGs because George Lucas barely touched it.
6 -- Freelancer
Best. Space sim. Ever. Where's my damn sequel Microsoft!? you (long string of expletives)
7 -- Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri
Why the fuck did Sid Meier make CIV4 and not SMAC2? WHY. WHY?!
8 -- Morrowind/Oblivion
I don't like fantasy that much, but Morrowind and Oblivion both changed my mi- Ok, they didn't change my mind I just don't hate fantasy as much after playing them.
9 -- LEGO STAR WARS
WHY THE FUCK NOT?!
10 -- Halo 1. And ONLY Halo 1.
I felt Halo 2 was just Halo 1 with everything good about it cut down to support the retarded brains of half of the idiots who made up the Xbox community prior to it's launch, and Halo 3 was Halo 2 with sexy multiplayer. Hell, did Halo 1's story line actually CALL for a sequel, the ending cut scene leaves barely any hints towards it, they pretty much won the epic fight but Microsoft just wanted money.
