This was the first song to come to mind, but I'm sure I've got more.

I think it just perfectly purveys that feeling of downtrodden sadness.

Oh my god. Metalocalypse. I LOVE YOU SO MUCH FOR POSTING THAT.

I forgot to post this one; the saddest song in the history of sad songs. EVER. The Buffy sad song. You know, the song they play on the show whenever anything really, really sad happens? Guh. I hear this song and immediately start bracing myself for someone near me to die or lose their soul or get sent to a hell dimension or something.

Brandon Flowers of The Killers wrote this after his grandmother died. It's one of the hardest hitting songs the band ever made.

This song evokes a ton for me, especially having essentially listened to them since they started. RIP Rev.

Hm.. My favorite would be Fade to Black by Metallica, but a couple runner ups would be Casimir Pulaski Day by Sufjan Stevens, Mad World by.. I can't remember who did this song, and You Don't Know How It Feels by Tom Petty.

Sad Song, by Paul Williams. And here is my favorite version of it--the version he sang for the Muppet Show.

Let those tears and sweet memories flow...

The Aria proper begins at about 0:47. It is a father pleading with his son. And this version in particular is gut-wrenching.

Stuid embedding. :-/

I have always found this song by Killswitch Engage particularly sad http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JDWrnC4ZQoA
Maybe it's just because of the bad relationship I was going through at the time... But this is always one of the songs that comes into my head when I'm trying to think of something sad.

Wow. Where has this band been all my life? That was really good.
I'm assuming you're talking about Cloud Cult.

Yeah, they're pretty special. Some of the most interesting, thought-provoking music I've ever listened to.

It's especially sad considering that the singer killed himself later....
