What's your 'I love it, but it drives me up the f&$king wall!' game?

The applies to most the games I'm playing right now. I adore Skyrim, but the glitches drive me nuts. Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines? Not as bad, but it's still there. Sonic Generations doesn't have most of the glitch issues, but there has been times where the bloody boost just doesn't respond when it's supposed to (though to be fair, that's probably just wear and tear on the boost button). And that "Defend the Flagship" quest in Bioshock Infinite is making be go prematurely bald.

Hitman, most recently absolution

absolution is a lot more forgiving than previous hitmans and ive found it to be slightly less linear and give you a bit more freedom in missions and also a lot more intuitive but as a result its less aggravating up until the point i had to get the fuses in the orphanage which are all right next to a big group of guards. Seriously that section is amazing but its hard as nails, trying to do it on hard or above with no kills or alerts is ridiculous. theres also this guy who is like the guards boss and he has a different outfit. i would assume this outfit lets you walk around anywhere unnoticed but the game decides that if you kill him (even if nobody is in the room) then you instantly get alerted. This section of the game alone took me ages. granted im a stealth purist (no kills no alerts on first playthrough) so i kinda make it infuriating for myself

Someone else beat me to it, but Fallout: New Vegas. Not for the difficulty (it's actually really easy unless you intentionally handicap yourself). The slowdown and glitches and game crashes have ruined more games of FNV for me than any Dark Souls boss. But when it's actually working, it's SO GOOD.

You said appearance mods and piqued my interest. Could you direct me to them, por favor?
Certainly. I actually have very few mods active but it's amazing how much difference there is in being able to play the game on maxed out graphics settings. That said, I currently have these mods installed:

- Natural Environments - Everything looks more vibrant and it includes varied weather patterns, better water effects, insects and birds and various environmental sounds.
- Tamriel NPCs Revamped (TNR) - Edits the face of nearly every NPC in the game to give greater variation between characters. I can't recommend this one enough.
- Slof's Better Horses - Just that, horses are more varied in colour and the saddles and tack have more detail.
- Francesco's Leveled Items and Creatures - Vastly overhauls every aspect of the leveling system and modifies the enemy level scaling to be fairer.

Another vote for Oblivion here, I loved the hell out of the game, but spent nearly as much time throwing internal ragefits about it's mechanics as I did actually playing. I could write a goddamn thesis about everything that was wrong with the leveling system. The number of entirely unintuitive things that you had to do in order to play the game without gimping yourself was/is nearly unforgivable.

Dwarf Fortress. It's not for everyone--and I can't even tell you why I love it--but I'm pretty sure it's become my favorite game of all time. Top three, at least. And the best part? After something like 40 hours of playing the thing, reading the wiki, and scouring the forums I still have NO idea what the hell I'm doing.

Dead Rising is a game I loved but absolutely hated when I started it. Fuck, it's hard to do anything when you're level 1-5.

dead rising 2 made me rage quit. it was a really fun game but it had stupid time constraints on missions meaning i didnt really have full freedom to explore and experiment which was the most fun thing about the game

StarCraft, and by extension StarCraft 2. Both are damn good games, and the AI in SC2 is a huge improve over the original. I love the universe and the lore, even if it gets a bit cliche at times.

The problem is, I'm just so damn bad at this game. Some of the single player missions I find to be a pain, and in multiplayer, I get pounded into paste. I just want to scream "Auuugh! How the hell did they get their second base up and create an army so fast? It doesn't seem possible!" And yet I keep playing, because for some weird reason I still find it fun.

Alpha Protocol. Its got a great story, dialogue system and the characters are interesting but the other half of the game is pretty much broken. Constant bugs, half of the weapons are pretty much unusable and its not very pretty to look at. Still worth what you can find it for nowadays but be prepared for some very frustrating moments if you dont spec your character right.

I'm not really sure. I guess, in a pinch, perhaps the Kingdom Hearts franchise [...]?

[...]

In the case of Kingdom Hearts, it's because they make actual, technical 100%-ing of the games so gorram difficult to do. I've got 99% in Birth by Sleep right now and doubt I'll ever get that last 1% because it would require me to beat the most BS boss in the game with two of the three playable characters.
For me, it's both Birth By Sleep and Kingdom Hearts 2... For Birth By Sleep, Terra just flat out SUCKS against that BS of a secret boss... In fact, how DID I beat the boss with Ven or Aqua? *mumbles* Stupid 1%... So fucking close... *stops mumbling* For Kingdom Hearts 2, I just hated Jimmy's Journal in general... That's TOO much shit for me to complete, dude... ESPECIALLY the synthesizing... Lucky Lucky or not, certain items just would not spawn for me... *mumbles* Fuck Standard difficulty... Proud or bust for secret ending... *stops mumbling*

ANYWHO, the games that I "love" but just get on my fucking nerves are:

Virtua Quest... Unbalanced difficulty mixed in with some awkward controls and poor excuse for "RPG elements' I have ever witnessed in a basically-a-fighting-game-driven game... It still one of those gems I ended up buying both the GmaeCube and Playstation 2 version...

Sonic Heroes... Music drags you in and the game punishes you in any way it can that makes it seem "fair" within the grand scheme of things... If you thought collecting the emeralds were "tough", then try to get all A ranks on every level and then come back to me on that..

Sonic the Hedgehog... from 2006 on the Playstation 3... Actually, the relationship I have with this game can be said with this one sentence: "This game has given me MAJOR Stockholm syndrome!" ...And yes, I can get all S ranks on every main level... The side missions are next, just you wait...

(I'm sensing a pattern... so, let's change it up a little...)

Rayman Advance... Out of ALL of the Rayman games I have played over the years... This is still the only one that I have yet to finish because I got stuck and this is still the only game I REFUSE to look up how to beat it...

Jak II... especially on Hero Mode, since after unlocking that mode... That's the only mode I play and, every fucking time, there's this one mission on the second act that I FUCKING HATE more than anything else within my gaming history... No amount of extras can help in beating this particular mission...

Nicktoons Unite! for the GameCube... I still love the premise and the reference to the FIRST Jimmy/Timmy Power Hour... Good luck maxing out EVERY weapon in the game on your first playthrough... (Still was a blast replaying this game with my own mother a year after getting the game...)

So far, those are the only ones that come to mind the most... I might dive back into Virtua Quest later now that I think about it... (Still not going to enjoy replaying that ruin level, though...)

Blacklight Retribution.

Sometimes you find a small anthill to stomp into the ground as a level 40 and up, and sometimes a bigger fish comes along and you're on the receiving end of the boot. So it can be fun, until said moment.

I'm actually going to go with GTA V for my most recently-played pick. :p

As much as I'm enjoying the game, there's a LOT of random crap that just pisses me off. Like those random police chases that go whizzing by. Sure they add a lot life to the city in that you're obviously not the only criminal in town so the cops actually do have other things to do, but they often end in big crashes, and if the crash happens near you you're more than likely to end up with a star or two just for being near the action.
Yeah, I've noticed that.

One particularly annoying instance was when I was on the way to a mission, and I was actually driving sensibly. Cue car chase. Criminal being chased's car plows the fuck into mine. Having made it quite some way without a scratch, this was... an unwelcome surprise.

So, I calmly exited the vehicle. Politely opened the door of the offender's car. And proceeded to beat him to the ground.

And the cops started taking shots at me, despite the fact they were coming after him with lethal force. :D

Sonic Adventure 2 Battle.
I love the game, especially the raising and nurturing of Chao. But the hunting missions always annoy me, the timed hunting missions make me want to eat babies, and the other missions sometimes just get cheap.
The camera is also terrible. One of the worst game cameras that I've had the misfortune of being exposed to.

But I can't not love it!

Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn.
I love the shit out of this game and the Fire Emblem series in general, but fuck me if it isn't relentless. Play on easy. Seriously, just fucking do it.

Oblivion, I absolutely love almost everything about it but it's actually more unforgiving than you'd think. If you specialise in anything that's not magic I hope you're prepared for a difficulty curve like running into a brick wall as you endlessly carry about 8 weapons (reducing the amount of other items you can hold) to do any damage to enemies with infinite health. You'll also have to stock about 50 healing potions just to make the journey.

There's also Remember Me, which if you've seen me posting at all I sing high praise through frothing bad grammar and punctuation. Damn the combat has it's frustrating moments, the gun's auto lock-on is as bad as GTA IV/V and the combos can be completely ruined by a dodgy auto lock onto enemies you don't want to hit (like the ones which do damage when struck).

Me too waiting Dark Souls 2.....It is one of the few hard games I really like.
Honestly, The Tomb of Giants didn't take me nearly as long as I thought it would, considering it was the last place I visited and I had grinded to Anor Londo and back by then.

Now Blighttown? That place can get bent.

Call me out all you like, but I wouldn't mourn the loss of some of the more dickish moves the first game made.

Dark Souls...

I love the dark atmosphere and vast unique environments.
I hate the time-sink of traversing across them two dozen times...

I love the creative bestiary and characters you deal with.
I hate the convoluted way side-quests and hidden paths are set up...

I love the style of gameplay driving me to explore and discover new things on my own.
I hate the style of gameplay driving me to shamelessly look up a guide for basic mechanics...

I hate Dark Souls. Can't bloody wait for the sequel.
Bahahaha that picture sums up Dark Souls so well!
OT: Ninja Gaiden 2... its so god damn fun but its so god damn hard, it makes DMD mode on DMC3 look like a piece of cake on the easiest difficulty

League of legends. Love the game, hate nearly all the people that play it.
As for a game that the mechanics drive me up the wall. Spellforce Order of Dawn. It has so much potential. An RTS and a 3rd person role playing game all rolled into one, with you able to take control of your character from a 3rd person or birds eye point of view. But the game has so many nasty mechanics that drag it out so much longer then it needs to be.
