Team Fortress 2 is highly unrealistic. I mean, sure, there's the Source physics system, blood and falling damage, limbs flying after exploding and so forth... But come on.

I mean, it's one of the best things about TF2, but you have to agree that graphics are NOT realistic.

Quite contrary.

Same with Saints row but that was just a rip off that was more entertaining. And Gears of War2 and i could go on, and on. but would just be reapeating my self.
Gears is supposed to be dark and gritty. Saints Row 2 isn't supposed to be dark and gritty and doesn't look like that. I don't mind that there are dark and brown games, as long as they're supposed to be dark and gritty. GTA isn't supposed to be dark and gritty so GTA4 shouldn't be gritty looking.

If we angled realism to the degree some people whine for half of fallout 3 would have been taking pit stops for unruly diarrhea from all the foreign irradiated crap you scarf down.

Personally i like the cartoony colorful action and environments that jive together. I like games that understand they are games (things you play for FUN). Resistance 1 was much the same style and felt allot like half life, but they nearly abandoned it for a bucket full of grit and Call of duty in the second. I enjoyed Resistance 2, allot because it was somehow able to meet me in the middle. Realistic within reason but still aware of itself.

Saints Row 2 > GTA IV, it's so much more fun! I also miss the ubercolored games xD, I love what they did with Street Fighter IV and Mirrors Edge.

Darn you to hell Gears Of War 2.

i like the occasional fakeish awesome omfgijustdidahadoukenisms but realistic games are fun haha .. nothing like pummeling a man to near unconsciousness with real fist to jaw sound effects .. watching him struggle to get up and slowly limp away when you pull a gun out then capping his knee as he tries to escape .. then watching the fear in his face as he slips in and out of sonsciousness then finally putting a slug in his head and watching the movement stop .. the face go blank and blood slowly seeping out of their skull ... i don't know if the hardon is normal or not but just incase you were wondering that's gta4 haha

realistic ragdoll engine ftw hahaha
I get the impression you're joking, but still, that's the most disgusting thing I've read in a long time. -__-

All the question tells me is that you don't know how to look for games. There are plenty of bright colored games filled with whimsy out there.

Buy a Wii.

They should make a game where everything uses really bright colours but everyones psychotic like Psychonauts. That would be scary.

If you want to steer away from bland colors, buy a Wii. Your eyes will puke rainbows at the large influx of extreme friendly colors on the first game you play.

Look, can I say something about all the brown-colored commentary?

Some places are just freakin' brown and dingy. This certainly occurs a'plenty in any spot where...

...there is dirt.
...there is stone.
...there is sand.
...there are things blowing up.
...there are things made of wood.
...there is some guy painting things brown.

It's not worth complaining over unless you're a game writer who wants to set things in a mauve medieval castle. (This might be an interesting sight, but you get the idea.)

I don't see where all this "brown" is in gaming, it really is overblown (with notable exceptions of course(Gears 1). Take Call of Duty 4 for example:
Yes there is brown but there is also many other colours.

It sounds like OP needs to play Noby Noby Boy.

I thought Mirrors Edge had a really washed out look.

I find that a lot of my games have very different art styles and color pallets. The only realistic art style that bothers me is the attempted ultra-realistic Bethesda look. Unfortunately, even with the current gen tech, the most realistic they can get is the look of a Disneyworld automatron.

Seriously, the first time I played Oblivion, I thought it was made in Epcot.

It's really the problem with setting, have you looked outside recently (assuming you live somewhere vaguely urban)... it's not exactly much else from grey/brown.

Odd, I also see blues and whites and greens of many a shade. I see much more green and blue than brown, in all honesty. Oh, and don't forget all that snow out there.

Let's exclude the red bricks.

Looks like we've come full circle...we had people complaining that older video games weren't realistic enough, and now the great fad is to bash games that attempt to be realistic.

Or it could be a "Yahtzee said it, so it's my new opinion, I'm so cool" moment.

Games will stop being realistic when hell freezes over with realistic icicles.

People just crave the experience of watching blood fly in HD.

games are getting too brown and annoying to look at. For example there is GTA4 that is is so hard who is who during high speed chases and fire fights you are thankfull for the auto lock. Same with Saints row but that was just a rip off that was more entertaining. And Gears of War2 and i could go on, and on. but would just be reapeating my self.

When are we going to go back to "wacky colored" games?
Isn't this just a 360 problem these days?
Not really. I don't really get what the problem is, the only brown game that I could mention is Gears of War (and it's sequel to a lesser degree). GTAIV is just dull, Killzone 2 is mostly gray. And I don't really see a problem with realism, I do however see a problem with equating realism to quality (as some people do).

I like the brown in some games. have you guys never heard of mise-en-scene? That brown sets a mood for the game; it's gritty, dirty, unpleasant. But that doesn't mean it isn't fun. Games that go for this approach are trying to tell the story not just through words, but colours. this is one of the few complaints I have about Halo 3; it didn't tell its story through it's aesthetic design. Humanity is supposed to be on the brink of invasion and subsequent elimination, right?
I think that the idea was to make the game fun, a colorful world to fight hilarious bad guys with wise-cracking comrades is fun. Halo's story isn't all that grim anyway, really it's triumphant. One soldier whose efforts save the entire human race is really the focus and the true desperation is downplayed (but always there).

They won't go away because

a) there is a market for this stuff.
b).....

You know you don't actually need a b), because that is all that matters. Realistic games sell well, so they aren't going anywhere.

And am I playing different games than everyone else? Gears 2 was one of the best looking games I've ever seen, both from a technical standpoint and an art design one. Each level had a very different colour palette, none of the levels were just "brown". Halo 3 is ridiculously colourful and has a wide variety of weapons and vehicles to choose from. What other games have an over sized vehicle chewing motorcycle with dual cannons as a way to get around?

Also, this trend of praising "silliness" in games as being the most important aspect is getting on my nerves. You can't read a thread these days without someone wondering why there aren't more games where you play as an Australian deep sea diver who fights cheese men from mars by firing hot dogs out of a bazooka while attempting to seal off an ancient tricycle riding evil kitten who wants to make everyone in the world dance to bad music.

Sure that is creative, but it is also the worst fucking idea for a game I have ever come up with. No one would buy the damn thing.
