Where can shooting games go next?

What features do you guys think should be included in shooting games in the future?
Or is it a legendary formula already that doesn't need changes?
For example how could they change the feel of the guns, the storylines, the settings etc
Just anything in general really!

I dunno. I had an argument like this with my friend (except it was about guns, not gun-based games) and we came to the conclusion that the best advances in this sort of situation sound like terrible ideas until they become good, or are made by accident.

Far as I'm concerned the last major innovation to the FPS that really stuck was freeaim. Other than that it's the same Wolfenstein/Doom formula, just with better graphic. And sure games a lot of times DO put a spin on the FPS genre, but it's usually shunned and accosted for either a) Not executing this innovation well, or b) not being enough like Halo, and so the games and their innovations die. Where can FPS's go from here? Probably nowhere.

I'm propping up a tree and some nails for you guys to crucify me as I type this, but I'm thinking that a period where the games go back to original Doom and Duke Nukem might be a good idea for us to get some perspective - no cover systems, no regenerating health, no storyline, just good, old fashioned ultraviolence against random... Things.

And I may eat my own face in desperation if I see another World War 2 game. We get it, Amerians won it single handedly, now PLEASE STOP.

I got a simple reply for this one, Epic scale gaming.
I came up with the idea of players choosing a side in a world map and then the 2 sides fight for control of the world map. taking objectives KoTH style or annex from Gears / Halo.
Make the scale MUCH bigger. Give people jobs like pilots to fly / drive, engineers to build bases etc.

haha, wont happen cause the lag caused by such a thing would melt the servers but i reckon it'd be a good way to go.

I really think the wii remote has the capability to improve FPS in a more involving way, but it really hasn't been tested or made that great yet (spare metroid 3 which was pretty solid, and the upcoming conduit looks to have potential)

I would also like to see a better story line and for gods sake, make a game that has 2 player or 4 player co-op worth buying/renting.

Isn't MAG something like that?

On the other hand, it's on the PS3, of all things (why a console...)


For PC, maybe Huxley... but since that game will have a monthly fee, they can flip off for all I care.

i'd just like some work on the weapons.
-correct weapon foleys
-slide/bolt actons that actually move
-actual magazine releases that result in magazines left in the environment, so you can tell where people have been, and what guns they have (very useful for finding elusive campers)
-maybe some ricochet physics?

They can now only add gimicks and how to tell stories differently (ex: fps on wii, half life stlye games when it first came out...)

Seriously, it's BAD for innovation. You can't experiment with more interesting mechanics since you need to balance them around the capabilities of other players. Just look at the cover mechanic in Killzone 2.

How about full 3D controls. Think Wii controls, but with a sensor bar in every direction. You could dual-wield weapons and fire on 2 different targets at the same time. You could run down a corridor shooting enemies on either side of you. Combine it with a wrap-around display and 7.1 surround sound, and I think you have the next FPS revolution.
