Where has unarmed combat gone?

Alright, let me clarify this right off the bat:

Fighting games don't count.

You wanna know why? Fine. I cannot stand fighting games, or their standard mechanics. Meaning: a lingerie model and the concept art for a horror movie stand face to face and take turns whacking each other in the face until one falls over. Repeat 2-3 times as necessary. Really it's not all that different to watching someone play Rock'em Sock'em robots, just significantly flashier.

With that being said, it bugs me that modern games don't seem to bother with incorporating hand to hand combat into their core gameplay.

(And no, the fact that your left click becomes "ineffectual telegraphed punch" when you have no weapon equipped in an RPG also doesn't count.)

And when games *do* include it, it's almost always in a very "cinematic" way. For instance in DE:HR, you do have the option of beating people into unconsciousness with your bare augs. But seeing as how you can only do this when a painfully slowly recharging power bar is full, and that the scenario plays out in the manner of a 6 second cutscene- it just winds up feeling like you're carrying an extremely slow loading pistol with a 1 foot range.

Or say, The Witcher 2's example of fisticuffs. You're able to take part in fist fights for cash, but again due to gameplay problems it doesn't actually feel much like a fist fight. The actual minigame consists of a series of QTEs that feels kind of like a game of Simon Says.

As for what kind of combat I wanna see, I'll outsource explaining to Matt Groening:

As for how one translates the process of violently wrestling a wild animal to the ground and putting it into a sleeper hold into an elegant stream of button presses? Beats me, that's the kind of work one should be paid for. But I know to a certainty that in a game like... Skyrim, or Fallout, I'd love the ability to do so.

Explosions, sharp objects & minion mastery are all well and good. But personally, I find that beating someone to death with ones bare hands is alot more impressive- and engaging.

Assassin's Creed 2's unarmed combat is not only viable but possibly much better than any of the melee weapons in that game if used correctly.

Mattew94 got it in one. They may be getting a bit old now but the condemned series did it well. Some parts in the riddick game did it well also.

I liked Skyrim's "brawling" system. It was a nice representation of a fistfight; right trigger for a right hand, left trigger for a left hand, and move as you wish. It didn't lock you into anything and it felt as clumsy as a barfight would tend to be, you each throw flurries while tripping over the other guys feet. The problem is that it was underplayed. You had to openly seek out a fistfight. you could go through the whole game without knowing about it.

I liked the first-person melee in Stranger's Wrath. You could do stuff like shoot a skunk at a guy, then punch him out while he's puking. Simplistic, but dat game feel.

Overgrowth is still inalpha, but it's awesome. The fighting is supposed to be realistic too. Every move has the potential to kill you, so you have to block. Combat is brutal and can take 5 seconds. Unfortunately, weapons are close to 1-hit K.O.

I've always wanted an excuse to try Condemned, so I suppose this is as good as any.

And uh... any particular reason the characters in Overgrowth are creepy anthropomorphic bunnies?

The entirety of the mechanics for close range battles in real time are found in fighting games, you are basically asking for those mechanics and ignoring exactly what the conclusion of those mechanics in a game are.

Also your summarry of fighting games is really dumb. I'm not sure if you meant to express yourself so dismissively but I almost reconsidered even responding to you.

It's clearly still around.

But seriously, I guess it is something that's not being down well at the moment. Knights of the Old Republic 2 gave you the option to build a character around unarmed Echani fighting techniques. It was pretty cool.

Didn't Mirror's Edge have some unarmed fighting as an option? I didn't play that game, but I feel like I saw some of it in videos.

Look up The Matrix: Path of Neo. It's a really greab beat em up, that not only is free flowing and multi-directional, but perfectly captures the style of the films.

Also, Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks. It's a beat 'em up, essentially a really bloody Double Dragon, but also a blast.

Further, Jade Empire, on Xbox and PC, a BioWare developed martial arts RPG.

Is Jade Empire like Baldur's gate or kotor? I liked kotor and prefered it to Baldur's Gate.

Like KotOR, but it's action based, and not turn based. I really loved it,

Arkaham Asylum did it in an entertaining way. There are a few games that do it right, you just have to look a little.

I don't care much for unarmed combat, but The Saboteur sure made it a ball of fun. Snapping necks, right hooks, Haymaker punches, grabbing, hurling, plus beautiful ragdoll physics as the Nazis topple over the high platform you flung them against. Sure its no Arkham, but still immensely rough and ready fun.

Most actual fights in Mirror's Edge was unarmed since you couldn't carry a weapon when you were leaping buildings. However combat was something you'd have more success avoiding altogether.

The Batman games are mostly about unarmed combat and it actually got pretty good fight mechanics too. However I get your point. I could probably Deus Ex should have more options than it did.

While not really deep, Saints Row the Third has satisfying melee combat. Running into and just wrestling slamming people to the ground, then turning aorund and doing a small punch/kick combo to a cop's face. I did an entire mission doing nothing but melee and loved it.
