Honestly, I can only really say Call of Duty and Madden. Most other series that I'm aware of tend to either mix it up enough to warrant sequels or stay interesting because of the story. Hell, I'm fine with Final Fantasy still happening because they DO change the gameplay up a bit with each new iteration. It's not for me, but some people like it.
Games like CoD and Madden simply need to take a page from Valve's book, the way I see it. Specifically, the way they run TF2. Why bother making a new game every year that people need to buy when you can just update and renew your current one? There's no need for a TF3, there was no need for a CoD 5.
And before someone says, "They have to get... money," I'm speaking optimistically enough that the people who labor over these games actually want, first and foremost, people to enjoy their creations. Not just to spend money on them.
