Which is harder to master, Fighting games or RTS's?

By that I mean to achieve tournament level skills against human opponents. I'm leaving Sports games out (the gap between experts and noobs is fairly small) and FPS (a few weapons and the mouse buttons)

1) Fighting games - pulling off moves, mind tricks against opponents, baiting, countering/reversals, decisions made within fractions of a second.

2) RTS - long term planning, resource management, micro and macro, click per seconds, multi tasking, build orders

Fighting games, no doubt.

You don't see people huddling around the Command and Conquer machine at the arcades, do you?

it probably depends on the person but I quit RTS cause each match just takes so long... in a fighting game the match is finished pretty quickly.

Edit: Probably RTS. But if not it at least requires a lot more patience than I have.

Play Quake, then come back and tell me in FPS there is a small difference between noobs and experts.

Edit: On topic, in my experience RTS, because you can get somewhere by just button bashing, but not having a decent strategy in a strategy game will make you lose.

RTS is a lot harder. Fighting games you can still be beaten by an arsehole mashing his controller. RTS doe require knowledge and skill to be good at.

I'm not sure what fighting game you were playing but I don't believe one like that exists. You would have to suck to be beaten by a button masher.

That would be funny and cost a lot I imagine.

Anyway it depends on the game. Tekken - any n00b may win. Smash bros and Street fighter - only people who train can win.

In general RTS need a lot of technique to win, seeing the best starcrafters play is extraordinary.

No but you see games like starcraft televised on TV

Worse, I am a button masher, who has beaten so-called experts at the game.

It's true, anybody worth their salt at a fighting game can smash a button masher simply because they know what they're doing. As for which one is actually harder to master, i simply say, that they require a different set of skills, and therefore are not comparable. You could say one is harder to learn then the other, but then it just boils down to how good a person is at the particular skill set that those particular games require, and everybody has different strong points therefore making it different for everybody.

How, in any way, does that mean fighting games are harder to master? People huddle around the arcade FPS's and they're not hard. It just means that people would prefer to watch 2 characters beat the crap out of each other instead of spend hours watching some select tactics and manage cities from a menu.

RTS's are harder, much more to be aware of, fighting games are a matter of timing and learning combos. Anyone with decent hand-eye coordination and some time on their hands can be good at a fighting game.

An RTS takes a lot longer to grasp the mechanisc and has waaaaaaaaaaay more considerations to take in to account.

It's like comparing chess to boxing. Sort of.

Then they arent experts. They're morons who cant even counter or block.

In my opinion fighting games are harder to MASTER. As that is the main point of the topic. They could be beaten by button mashers, most likely not, but they have mastered all the moves and like. Making them, in essence, masters.

RTS's are usually the good ol' click and manage scenario. But they do take alot of skills sometimes.

My ego maintains that they were experts and I simply pressed buttons faster than them, but I'll concede the point (about mastering).

RTS

The Korean Starcraft players, who by right are called among the best of the world, train 8h a day. And some have been doing it for years and are still not the champions.

In fighting games the reflexes are what matters. In RTS is both the quickness of your fingers as well as your ability to strategize, fight tactical battle and keep your base going that matters.

Many RTS masters have APM of over 300. That's over 300 actions per minute and that level is required to really challenge the worlds best. Otherwise you just aren't fast enough to do everything you'd have to do. And as said, you have to keep your strategy in mind while doing this and be able to adapt to enemy counter-moves and counter strategies.

I've been playing fighting games and RTSs for quite a few years now, so I decided I'd try this one.
Match was set up for a round of AoM and Tekken against the worst gamer we know.
In AoM I puked builders and he lost in under 15 minutes.
In Tekken (with the same characters) he could always pull off something crazy with just mashing and even won a few rounds.

Not saying that fighting games are easier, but they're usually more intuitive and easy to start off with. RTSs on the other hand usually requires a thorough understanding of the resources, units and buildings to successfully overwhelm the opponent.

As I see it fighting games are a lot about "polishing" your style and having the timing on your fingers.

I'd say fighters, the good ones anyways, when you can counter against button bashers then learn some insane combos and the exact timing to pull them off, that's some insane level of skill to me. Both can be very skillful though.
