My friends and I were having a conversation in our tutor room in school today and somehow the discussion got onto music. I commented about how Coldplay songs always sound relatively depressive, My friend then said that Metallica was a more "emo" (as we were putting it) band. My other friend agreed with me and another friend agreed with the "other party". So I decided to put it to the escapist to vote for us! :]

Edit:

>>>(By emo we meant depressive and about depressing songs just you you guys know.)<<< EMPHASIS ON THIS. Its just what we say. The only reason it came into it is because my friend was using it as an example to argue his point by saying that I listen to Metallica so it must be emo. We didn't mean it as in the genre.

Funny how being depressing doesn't make something emo.

Media, I hate what you've done to the genre of emocore. Jimmy Eat World and My Chemical Romance are nothing alike.

I don't really listen to Metallica, so I'm probably not the best person to ask.
From what I've heard, Metallica sound much more upbeat, whereas Coldplay are usually quite dreary.

Depressing =/= Emo.

I enjoy both bands, and both have their share of depressing songs. Even so, neither are emo or have any songs of the sort.

I'm pretty sure MCR ain't emo, the lead singer once referred to emo (at least the modern emo) as "bullshit."

Metallica are not depressing nor emo, far as I gather, and I'm a pretty big fan.

They aren't. Thats my point. Modern media has made "emo" the description for anything depressive. Which is completely wrong. Jimmy Eat World started the emocore genre. If you listen to their first album, most of those songs aren't anywhere close to depressive.

Coldplay are significantly more depressive in tone than Metallica. Metallica have done some depressing songs(and may well be darker in subject matter) but their general tone = is more angry and upbeat as a rule.

Then again, the existence of St. Anger probably depresses me more than all of Coldplay's songs combined, but that's another matter altogether.

Umm, no they didn't. Not even close. Emo(core) traces it's origins back like 15 years befroe JeW was even a band. Generally speaking, weezer is often credited with 'mainstreaming' emo via their pinkerton record, and JeW definitely plays a role in the genre, but you should be looking back to the 80's and early 90's, and bands like rites of Spring, Fugazi, Sunny Day Real Estate to see where the movement got it's start.

Also, in this thread: a huge disconnect between downtempo, melodic, emotional pop and "emo".

Neither. Ones metal ones pop. Just because lyrics of a few songs are sad doesnt mean they are that type of music

Metalica practically started THRASH METAL, Coldpay plays a rather slow and rhythmic melody.

Neither are emo. Sad lyrics or depressing themes do not make you emo.

and To be honest, I find enither deoressing

This. Using the standard I can see, I can include The Fray or even Lady Gaga in the "depressing" category.

Did you read the brackets at the end of the post?
