Ok, so I was looking through some of my old games, and I found System Shock 2 there and I started playing it. It's been years since I last played it, and it STILL scares the crap out me. Its probably the best Sci Fi/Horror game ever made, Bioshock doesn't even come close. It was so difficult, the enemies freaked me out, and your guns jammed at the WORST time possible. Who else remembers this game?

Never played, but near everyone else here probably has. It's praised around these parts.

we all know of the (obvious) comparisons between SS2 and bioshock. and while yes, it is a brilliant game i think people forget that bioshock is still very awesome, even if it does take some elements from SS2. i have played SS2, definately worth playing if you haven't. go pick it up now!

Never played it. Never really played anything on PC aside from The Sims and Medieval Total War.

You know, I heard that there's a third game in the making. Just a rumor, I don't know if it's true.

System Shock is, alongside Deus Ex, the prime example of blending rpg and fps done right. Deux Ex 3 is in development and there are rumours now and then of SS3, but chances are they'll be diluted versions of the originals, like Invisible War and Bioshock.

Yes, of course, but it is a DOS game with a very awkward user interface so most don't bother with it. Some who played it at the time rate it higher.

System Shock 2 has frustrating controls, it looks terrible, and the last few levels are so rushed they feel like a totally different and substantially worse game.

It's also one of the most genuinely scary, engaging, and thought-provoking games I've ever played.

The monkeys.... the fucking monkeys... to this day, I wake in a cold sweat, memories of late nights, walking through the labs, with monkeys all around me. Angry monkeys. THEY'RE SO GODDAMN ANGRY.

EVERY TIME I hear that screeching, I cringe. It's like reflex, now. If I ever went by the primate house in a zoo, I'd probably end up in the fetal position in a corner, begging someone for a psi hypo and a handful of AP rounds.

Never played it, I was born 94. Also, about Bioshock, I don't think it was meant to be really scary. It was more meant for it's deep story and great atmosphere. At least from what I see of it.

I'm hoping Deus Ex 3 will be good, but deep down I know it probably won't live up to the first game. Bioshock was really good, it had an excellent story and cool plasmids, but it wasn't as scary and it didn't have the rpg elements that SS2 did.

I remember the original System Shock, I played the demo on my high-end 486DX2-66. Thank you very much.

I do! I used it for inspiration in my D&D campaign. A lot of people remember it around here, as a matter of fact; I'm sure you can find some old reviews of it in the User Reviews section.

EDIT- WOO! 2000th post! :D

Indeed there was, it had the poor fortune to come out at about the same time as the original Quake, and had a lot more interesting concepts and gameplay within it, but got simply steamrolled by the far more polished game that was Quake.

To be more precise, SS1 is to SS2 what SS2 is to Bioshock, that is to say: SS1 had poorer graphics, poorer story, harder and less intuitive controls, more complex gameplay, less forgiving gameplay, and arguably more pure fun despite all that.

However, I will give SS2 the honor of being the scariest of the three.
Please turn the statement around: SS2 had even better graphics, a better story, better control, easier gameplay, ... When SS1 came out it was groundbreaking both technically and storywise. SS2 built onto all that. It's like saying that Daggerfall had worse graphics than Red Guard or Morrowind. Well of course it had, Morrowind was released six years later.
