Right now the world?s superpower is the US before that it was Brittan before that Rome. Given the shape the US is in now with our economic crisis and the fact that a good portion of the world hates us for one reason or another. Unless the next president does something in the next four years, the US will stop being the superpower of the world. So if that happens who do you think the next superpower will be? My votes on China or maybe the power will actually be in the hands of multiple nations.

The states won't fade out drastically unless a genuine depression starts, but it will lose a hell of a lot of influence. I foresee the re-emergence of a multipolar world; China will definitely be empowered, but Russia is also pretty resurgent these days.

I'm all up for it being Wales, or the Vatican City going militant. But realistically probably either Russia or China.

Is this based on mercantilism or military strength?
its based on anything you want it to be seeing as how this is a hypothetical question.

china and probly india

althought china really keeps to itself, it decided to expand, we're screwed
I have a problem with people claiming that India is going to be the next States. India has massive social problems, and some of the worst poverty in the world. The government doesn't really have the power to ignore those problems like the Chinese government does. I think it's going to take a lot of domestic work before India is anything other than a lucrative foreign market for other superpowers.

China and Russia. Hopefully the U.S won't fade away too much in influence because as a counterbalancing power that could work pretty well.

Simple answer-no one. India, chine and russia may be strong and rich but their too torn up internaly to become a superpower, I can't really think of any nation which can replace the USA.
the states was incredibly torn up socially and economically before it became all powerful. I think realistically pretty soon it will be more like, the EU, North America and east Asia competing to be the superpowers, when theirs more continental unity.

I'm all for Canada. But to quote he-who-must-not-be-pissed-off, according to history, biggest jerk wins. So you can't really have a militant based superpower because it'd be hard to fight the US with all the superweapons.

China sounds like one, but I think they'll probably collapse under the weight of their own economic growth. The land simply can't take it, and when the environment crumbles, what do you have left? Even if their standards are a little better than the US, they've still got 1.3 billion people.

I think it could be China because their Economy is pretty good but they have a few social problems, given that though they are experiencing a surge of national pride so who knows.

Personally I think if in some Parallel Universe it could be the EU, if they managed to ever pull it together and stop acting like bratty brothers and sisters who can't share. Real potential but its being wasted.

Not Russia though, they are just show boating. They may be acting tough again but their economy is going down the pan and Social problem wise they pretty much have every one in the book.

US ain't going anywhere for a while though.

It already is China

A few weeks ago the Chinese 'politely requested' that Fanny Mae and Freddy Mac be Nationalised, to 'secure the value of America's economic interests'. Shortly afterwards both were bought out, being able to control the US government and economy without firing a shot, that's power.
China holds the lion's share of America's vast national debt, essentially giving them control of the value of the US dollar.

It's amazing what you find out listening to Radio 4...
