So many to choose from .

Nina breath of fire series[not 5] She always starts as a whiney princess but as the game progresses she turns out to be useful if not vital.

Felicia from Darkstalkers. simply put Meow.

Samus for most of the reasons posted above but mostly cause i remeber beating the first metriod game and discovering with my awsome shock at that age that she was a she.

Princess Peach Hold on hear me out here. She gets captured all the time but she never gives into the demands and the over grown dragon turtle has yet to eat her . I doudt its because of her fighting skill but in regards to that her diplomicy has to be insanely high .
The fact that she also has lasted this long with just a couple of plumbers to resuce her floating butt is impressive. The fact that shes inspired so much illicite art work from fans just for wearing a victorian era pink frilly dress is something to ponder.

-Samus Aran: Powerful and courageous female character that is virtually fearless and not the stereotypical sissy or pretty ditz

-Terra Brantford: Her origin and quest to find her purpose for existence is quite moving. Her origin is both her strength and weakness, inspiring courage and doubt in herself. She felt like a real person that could be related to, and did not fall into cookie cutter stereotypes.

Celes Chere closely shares the same as Terra.

I gotta say Captain Rachel Parker from Resistance Fall of Man because I'm a sucker for an English accent.

Ooh, good topic.

In general, FF6 has some of the best female characters ever to grace a videogame. As Seraph mentioned, both Celes and Terra deserve a mention.

But my favorite female videogame characters of all time, by far, are Led [http://www.valkyriestudios.com/LED.HTM] and Maya [http://www.valkyriestudios.com/MAYA.HTM] from Septerra Core. Led is this spunky, defiant character that bears an unnerving resemblance to my own sister (bless her obnoxious heart) and Maya has this intelligence and leadership that you rarely see portrayed in females characters, from videogames or otherwise.

Probably at least 3-4 of my top 10 favorite game characters of all time are from Septerra Core, actually. :)

Septerra Core was the first computer game I've ever played and it is still in my top 10.

Bridget....... Oh wait.... Nevermind..... -goes in corner and questions masculinity-

But seriously,

http://wildarms.wikia.com/wiki/Image:Virginia_Maxwell.jpg

Virginia Maxwell gets my vote, she's a great character because she's extremely flawed, fails at everything for a while because she is childish, she then matures then actually becomes capable of doing things, says a few cheesy lines, shoots stuff with her pistols, then gets the crap beaten out of her by a demon, but that's besides the point. She's a well built character compared to most these days, even if a bit annoying in personality at times.

And the only reason I didn't vote for Alyx is to spite her, because in HL2E1, I hated having to push a car in the way of the ant lions to turn the cranks, while Alyx just shot at them pointlessly with her pistol, when I could've taken my gravity gun and juggled them while she opened the damn door, the only thing I hated in the game xD

And Chell is (most likely) a human, remember in Portal, GLaDOS says. "The regularly scheduled test chamber was not available." Which was most likely a lie, but she used it an excuse for turrets.

I realized the wiki didn't have a picture of Bridget xD
If you want a Guilty Gear character picture, try here [http://ggxlol.highervoltage.net/]. Props for mentioning Virginia though!

To be honest, I'm going to have to go for Coco Bandicoot [http://crashbandicoot.wikia.com/wiki/Image:Cocobandicoot.jpg], mostly for the intellectual side.

Definetly Jade from Beyond Good and Evil. Beautiful while not forced, nice without annoying flare and a good personality with a healthy about of emotions. The fact that she took it on herself to raise a bunch of orphaned kids with her uncle tells you how good person she is.

Cate Archer is cool, I admit. Lovely, handy but still somehow believable.

Fatima from Anachronox. Granted she's dead and all, but she remained pretty helpful and nice after she died. Gotta have a heart of gold to be like that. Speaking of Anackronox, Stiletto was OK, but I wasn't that terribly impressed by her, not even with her dance thing. Same goes for the quantum physicist woman. She did have a "toughened wondering smarty girl" aura to her, but I didn't particularly feel any emotion from her aside "grrr, I'm tough". Kudos for making her not feel like a vulcan from Star Trek.

I sorta liked Rayne, but I never really got to know what kind of person she is. She is a gothy, super-strong action girl but she never really had much character. Then again, she doesn't need to be.

I may deserver the scorn of feminists for this, but I liked the mage girl from Dark Messiah. Sweet, cute, capable yet still looked like someone who's more then a bit of cardboard.

One more: the hacker girl from Project Eden. The game had a hilarious ending despite its very creepy build-up.

SHODAN from System Shock 2
Technically speaking, I wouldn't consider her a female. She's an AI gone crawling-on-the-walls bonkers.

Imoen [http://forgottenrealms.wikia.com/wiki/Imoen#Biography] from Baldur's Gate

GladOS from Portal, although I'm surprised people are saying Chell. Come on, she's an unremarkable vessel for the player who happens to be female, that doesn't mean you know anything about her (or rather, you are her; she is you).

Lyn from Fire Emblem, although I suppose I like the game itself and how she plays more than the actual character.

I'm going to cheat and say Storm from the X-Men, due to her appearance in the X-Men games, specifically X-Men Legends [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/X-Men_Legends_II:_Rise_of_Apocalypse#Characters].

Alyx Vance- the only female game character i've seen who is'nt a cardboard cutout
SUCH. A. LIE.

typical guy-designed generic "girl-next-door" style supposedly her own person but needs a man to do all the hard things and swoons all over them, improbably attracted to the geeky character that's a substitute for the player, serving her only real purpose to increase Loser Appeal
What? She's a crack shot, she rarely needs "saving" (she got that stomach wound in combat!), she builds bad-ass machinery, she's a famous figure in an underground resistance movement, she has amazing hacking skills and she cuts down enemies like wheat. I haven't finished Episode 2 but so far she's shown no overt attraction for Gordon, but of course she admires him: he's a legendary near-mythical hero in that world! Everyone is his groupie because he saved the entire world once.

She's the second-toughest character in the games, and Gordon is probably only ahead because he wears a high-tech suit of armour. Once again: Gordon does the toughest jobs because of his high-tech suit of armour, not his testicles.

And despite that, Gordon still needs her help to get through doorways.
