Why did Unreal tournament 3 suck so much?

Seriously, I loved unreal tournament, Unreal tournament 2003/4 was pure gold, and then epic games changed their style. With UT3 everything looks like Gears of War - game play is slow, and you are fodder if you're not in a vehicle, they took away all the game modes that were good (assault, onslaught - no Warfare is NOT the same thing, last man standing, bombing run) - and the new game modes aren't that much fun. The graphics do not scale in the slightest, yet UT2K4 was probably the best multiplayer shooter I've ever played, anyone else agree/disagree?

Obviously they're going to look the same if they both use the same engine and made by the same company. [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Unreal_Engine_games#Unreal_Engine_3]

UT 2004, the only other UT game I ever played, was better than UT3. This isn't because I played 2004 first, but because UT3 went for a somewhat more realistic feel, and that doesn't 'fit' with the rest of the series.

Oh God, yeah. How that could be called a "Campaign" amazed me.
The intro movie looked like it would have been far more fun than the crappy arena-with-bots thing they had going on for single player.

Though I got it for a tenner and bought it mainly to try out a couple of mods.

They could have at least made an effort.

I don't know what you're talking about. I loved UT04 and thought it was the best twitched based fps ever. And when UT3 came out, I thought it was a step forward in the UT series. Sure the game may look like Gears, but it doesnt play like it. The only problem I had was them taking out some of the game modes. Everyone has their own opinion on the game, you may hate it, but I love it.

The only thing that puts me off is the visuals. The actual gameplay is excellent, and it can be picked up really cheaply. Unfortunately, since the computer I'm using at the moment doesn't have the graphical power to run it, I've been playing UT'04 instead.

I'm gonna say crappy AI.
This. Everything else is really good except the AI. Sometimes it's almost impossible to win a mission because of the stupid AI.

The fact there isn't even a damn TOURNAMENT! I was really dissapointed, and the fact it pales in comparison to UT2004.

The main point for me was "All right, Epic. Why have you removed Assault mode AGAIN?"

It was a bad idea in UT2003, and UT2004 was all the better for them returning it. What goes on in the minds of the design team of Epic must be strange indeed, though I suppose that was partially obvious some time back with certain bits of the ZZT official worlds. :p

EDIT: Ah, I've remembered another problem I had - with my low-end PC I was running a far lower framerate with low-quality graphics in UT3 than I was with better quality graphics in UT2004.

It appeals to the PC fanbase more.

They nerfed the name, and the title screen says "PRESS START TO PLAY"
There is no start button on a computer......pc gamers get mad at console ports.

I played Unreal Championship, which I loved. I liked how there were different teams, and even a few "leadership" stats if I remember. It really convinced me it was a tournament. I also loved the Lightning Gun, which they got rid of.

I hate UT3 because the "teams" appeared to be thrown in there for the hell of it, and then focused on the "Ronin", who look all look like Marco Fenix from Gears of War.

I also did not like the vehicles. I liked the idea, but the maps that used them always gave you the regular, boring vehicles, and not the badass Necris vehicles, unless BOTH teams had the Necris vehicles.

The maps that used vehicles also sometimes used it as more of a "move faster" mechanic than a method of killing. In one level, Sandstone or something, I remember finding an amazing looking plane, and was eager to use it. When I tried to though, it was far too big to go anywhere but up above the plateaus, where there was invisible walls. Maybe it was just the confusing map, but it appeared the crack in the cliff was where the flag was, and the game wouldn't let me get there via plane.

UT3 was more of a "Gears of War Online" that DIDN'T just focus on heavy use of the Lancer.

I have a question.
Do you not know the meaning of "appeal", or did you contradict yourself on purpose?

what i hated was AI bots ONLINE!? i played online for weeks recently thinking i was amazing because i was owning all the noobs, then i realized they were bots when i wanted to enter a vehicle they hopped right out, it sickened me, i would rather play a server with less players than a server with 3 players and 20 bots, thats the reason they created Single play mode, to play against bots, ARGH my week was wasted!
i am literally sickened by it.

Lack of game modes previously in older versions.
Higher requirements meant it was accessible to less people.
