Why didn't anyone created an sci fi space opera MMO that rivals WOW?

Why has someone not created a sci fi MMO with spaceships, cool looking aliens, and cool futuristic technology that is just as popular and addictive as World of Warcraft? Is fantasy combat more fun?

That is not really up to the MMO. Star Trek Online exists. It just wasnt as popular.

EVE Online? Star Trek Online? Star Wars Galaxies? Star Wars: The Old Republic?

It's not so much that they haven't been created, it's more that no MMO has eclipsed WoW, regardless of genre.

Because nobody has yet made an MMO of any kind that rivals WoW.

The Old Republic is basically oldschool WoW, only with a Star Wars skin, and with full-on spaceship combat available as well..

Wait, isn't this the OP that make random thread but does not comment back into it?

OT- You haven't look around haven't you? There are already some scifi mmorpg games that could be a rival to WoW ONLY the game is popular enough to drawn in millions AND maintain that numbers!

The MMO market suffers from the same problem that the FPS market does;

WoW is simply so huge that it chokes out all competitors, even if they're better than it is. The same thing happens with CoD in FPS market - CoD is simply so huge it that drowns that competition no matter how bad it gets, and only a few stalwarts like Battlefield and Halo can even begin to think of surviving.

Oh geez buddy I do wonder if anyone has [http://www.swtor.com/info/news/news-article/20110924] ever [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_Wars:_The_Old_Republic] had [http://www.swtor.com/] that [LMNm3SCLfN4] idea [LbpDxrew4A0]. I mean it's not like there's some huge [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_Wars] lucrative [http://www.the-numbers.com/movies/franchise/Star-Wars#tab=summary] space opera franchise [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_box_office_records_set_by_Star_Wars:_The_Force_Awakens] that could do exactly that.

Because Blizzard decided they don't want to make Space of Starcraft.
I remember the whole rumor mill surrounding Blizzards plans for two MMO's, one unnamed and the other Titan, with people thinking either could be World of Starcraft. Lasted for years.

Titan eventually got canned, with many of its ideas repurposed into Overwatch. Don't know what became of the unnamed one. Probably canned too.

They did. It's called Star Wars - The Old Republic. It's actually a good game, a good MMO.
I thought everyone hated it when it came out?

It was strike 2 for the fall of Bioware?

Dragon Age 2 = Strike 1

SWTOR = Strike 2

Mass Effect 3 = Strike 3 and your out.

WoW was a unicorn and its absurd levels of success aren't likely to be replicated by anyone anytime soon. Even Blizzard realized this, which is why Titan was scrapped and eventually became Overwatch. To put things in perspective, WoW is STILL one of the most profitable/played games on the market, now 13 years after it initially released. Other hit games from the year it released include Half Life 2 (last relevant in 2007), the Sims 2 (last relevant in 2009), Knights of the Old Republic II, and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. These are games that are now considered, at best, "charmingly retro". And then you have WoW, still looming over its genre and bullying the competition with every content drop.

If and when another game captures the zeitgeist like WoW did, it won't look or play anything like WoW. It'll be another genre buster in its own right, like Minecraft, or League of Legends. Something that popularizes a formula and expands the audience for it exponentially.

It had issues, but it wasn't a bad game. Among the earliest issues were terrible performance in the Fleet (central faction zone) and crazy faction imbalance (many more Sith than Republic). Also the PvP planet, Ilum was an ill-thought out disaster. Following on 3 months later, the population plummeted and so it became very hard to find teams for anything other than level 10 (finished starter planet) and level 50 (max level at the time). They left it far, far too long to merge servers so from Feb->July 2012 the game permanently lost too many players.

As MMOs go however, it is very good. It's both accessible and nuanced and the changes they've made over time have improved it somewhat. Being able to customise our characters looks/gear is great, the companions are great for both story and mechanically make it easier to solo or play in smaller groups. The classes are a little kookie...ranged tank, stealth tank and stealth healer for example. It's not perfect, there are still issues, chief among them the rather unwelcoming F2P model. The engine is also a bit janky, some servers have low populations (and they charge a shit load to move characters) and a lot of content has fallen by the way side. What they've done instead with their expansions is create single-player focused adventures, in effect a sorta 15-20ish hour single-player KotOR game. At the end of that, it opens up the MMO part again, farming dungeons, raids, etc. It is quite different and works well.

I have been massively disappointed by the company BioWare became. DA2, DA:I and ME3 showed the downhill turn they took, but SWTOR isn't the same thing. It was developed by so-called "BioWare Austin", basically a completely unaffiliated EA studio that they renamed. The only thing it had in common was the senior-most leadership, but had nothing to do with anything BW pre-SWTOR.

Mainly because there can only be one WOW, it's so popular it's impossible to create something to rival it.
Basically this.

The problem with MMO's is that people have a limited amount of time, and MMO's by their very nature require a lot of time to play. So if you get invested in one MMO you are not likely to invest in another one unless there is little to no investment (hence why a lot of MMO's need to be F2P to maintain success).

Additionally, creating an MMO is very expensive and many companies shy away from it due to the unwavoring success of WoW. Chances are, that if a person is interested in playing an MMO, they are already playing WoW and are unlikely to switch to a different MMO for any length of time to be worth while.

Because Wow is so established, and people already have huge investments in characters and the like into that game, the odds of players moving to a new MMO and sticking around long enough to provide the development company a return on the investment required to even make the game, are very low. Again, unless the game is completely free to play so that players don't feel the need to divide their time.

So yeah, basically if the damn Star Wars MMO had to go F2P to stay alive, nobody else is going to dare make shit right now.

At least Mass Effect 3 as a game is acutally fun compared to the travesty that was DA: 2

Ah City of heroes/Villains RIP you crazy Diamond. I loved the insane alternate history that made that games lore...Wonder if I can still find it to read for old times sake.

WildStar feels like it's trying to be that. Though the WoW gameplay model feels really dated now, as does WildStar without even being anywhere near as old.

I don't even get why people keep bringing up TOR, WoW is like this giant open world game, TOR is like a glorified single player romp you can play in co-op. Sure it's based on a massive franchise but it isn't even trying to be like WoW at any stage, WoW was never as linear as TOR is.
