I don't. I always play as a male character. I am a man, therefor I play as one in a game.

Edit: I'm aware my avatar is a girl :p Doesn't change the fact that I always play as a dude. I just like to look at scene girls :D

No wait.... What I meant was: Why do you assume all males play as females?

1) Bio-ware games have alternative NPC reactions/actions/choices and such which alter the game experience. These are usually the best reasons.

2) I like to create characters of existing characters, sometimes they are female characters. I attempt to create those female characters (with customization options and such available).

3) To get free things from male players. It happens. It's better to get stuff for free and especially if (and most likely) the gender roles are usually statically equal (unlike real life. It's true, whether or not you accept it. I still won't argue that games shouldn't have equal genders)

4) Aesthetically more appealing than their male counterparts. And you usually have an ass-side-view you'll be staring at for hours. Might as well be a sexy bum than a sagging old man's crevice.

If I get a choice, I use a male first then switch to a woman on my second go. Unless me friends have it too, at which point I go straight to a female character. If I can adjust the face, I go with the goofiest looking face I could possibly make. In the ME2 demo, I made a girl look a lot like a slightly uglier Marylin Manson (FYI, he is a guy).

Because humans are capable of making choices. And we like using that ability. That's why we sometimes play as robots.

Why do some women like playing as male characters?
Because it's not about "like". It's about "why the fuck not?"

I love that your avatar is a woman.

OT: It's actually kind of cathartic to see how the other side lives, games, especially RPG's, are all about stepping into someone else's shoes.

I like to dance naked on goldshire mailbox with my male characthers.

OT: Because males look like drag queens wearing tiaras and pink dresses. Thats why my casters are females.

I remember someone saying that if they're going to stare at someone's ass for a few hours, it better be a female's. It was probably from /v/ from what I can remember. But I think if you play a game that has certain female characters that are useful, you might play them for their effectiveness, examples would be certain fighting games or DOTA-like games.

As countless men have said before me and countless will say after me:

"If I'm going to be staring at an ass all day, it might as well be attractive."

I usually play as a male character. For some reason if I have a choice and I'm making a healer, I pick female. I'm honestly not sure why...

I do it because sometimes I want my character to be able to look faaaab-u-loussss! *jazz hands*

Plus caster items tend to look less silly on women in my opinion. Most often though it's because that's the type of character I felt like making at the time. On the rare occasions people ask in game why I'm playing a female character I just tell them I lost a bet to Ru Paul.

I don't. Partly because any role playing game in my house gets played twice once by me and once by my wife so i get to see or at least hear about the slightly different content for being a woman.

FYI Dragon Age has a much more heart rending ending if you're a female character. I hope that they will make the 'Warden' female in official cannon in later games.

I find it easier to create a character if it's a female, rather than a male. And I mean "character", not "avatar". It's easier to work out backstories, motivations, etc.

The whole "they're better to look at" angle doesn't really make sense to me.

I play as casters most commonly, tend to find that robes and the like look utterly ridiculous on men, it's just aesthetics mainly and I'm not gonna bullshit with any other excuse, I prefer playing as a female caster or a female character in general because they look better.

Just...Please don't give me armour that covers 10% of my character's body, it pisses me off that anyone would wear armour so impractical.

Woman protagonists can be more interesting depending on the setting.

Though in Mass Effect I always played a guy. Mainly because you're pretty much playing a guy no matter which gender you choose.
