Why does everyone love Bioshock?

Am I the only the only person who thought that Bioshock was deeply average?

Sure the story was decent with a few cool plot twists but that didn't make up for the tedious gameplay which became boring and repetitive. People kept on praising the story when games like Fallout and Mass Effect's story is 10x better. They also have better gameplay. I don't hate the game, I'm just pretty underwhelmed.

Does anyone else think it was average or do you think it was great?

I really enjoyed it, but I can understand what you mean about the repetitiveness. If you enjoy the gameplay style, then you'll love it. If you don't like it, then it's a grind.

The thing I enjoyed about it were the old school effects of the 1960's, how you could carry all those weapons, slowly working out the history of the characters and the general story. It was artistic without being so caught up in it the gameplay becomes obscure.

I really should take a look at Fallout, if it goes along the same concept...

Because you got to have more than 2 weapons. that's why. nothing more nothing less.

and the story, gameplay, feel was an extra bonus on top.

Fallout is fantastic. And yeah, Bioshock did remind me of that. And Dead Space.

OT:
I've only played Bioshock 2, but I couldn't really get into it. Saying that, at the time I was playing I had a lot going on. My housemate as bought it so I may have to borrow it and give it another try...

I didn't get on with it. Played it for a few hours. Didn't enjoy myself. Stopped and have not gone back. I think that has something to do with me not enjoying games designed to scare people, or make them tense for long periods of time - but I also found the control scheme awkward and I wasn't drawn into the story.

I think pretty much everything about that game was great, except for the gameplay, which was incredibly dull and clunky.

As much as I want to like the game, playing it is a chore.

I could never get into Bioshock 2. Being a big daddy is kinda cool, but it just didn't have the magic touch of the first one. The idea with Sophia Lamb is awkward to take in for me, because how did we hear nothing about her before? It shouts "committee design" to me.

I played it all the way through but i didn't really enjoy it that much, too easy...you can't die! What is the point if death isn't the end? It's like assassins creed lol

What I most like about Bioshock are the places where it differs in gameplay from most first person shooters these days. Namely, its GAME design is most like an old-style FPS such as Doom:
-the levels are large and sprawling instead of cramped and linear (they're still kinda linear but it feels more open to me),
-the enemy variety is greater than an army dude who yells in Arabic and an army dude who yells in Russian with a slightly different gun,
-Jack fires from the hip instead of having to look down the sights to hit anything further than a shotgun's range away (although the crossbow does have a scope),
-you have a health bar and health pickups instead of the screen being covered in blood for a few seconds until you stop getting shot at,
-and all the different guns have reasons for using them, and by that I mean more than "You have to change weapons with your downed enemies because you run out of ammo really fast!"

This is all wrapped up with graphics that make it appeal to people who won't play Doom because it doesn't have perfect 3D graphics and shading and such. And hey, if it gets them interested in Doom, all the better, right? Not to mention the story, writing and voice acting are all top-notch.

I originally thought it was pretty average, until I bumped up the difficulty notch on my second playthrough and turned off the Vita Chambers. I will say it doesn't transform the game into this mind-alteringly-good game that reviews seemed to think it was, but it does make the game noticeably better.

As for the rest, the story and philosophy behind the world of Rapture are far more interesting and thought provoking than the current "YOU ARE A WESTERN SOLIDER - KILL ALL THE ARABS IN THEIR COUNTRIES" setting and story that's puked about.
It basically comes down to this: on the same scale where Duke Nukem Forever scored a few 10/10s, Call of Duty nabs 9/10 every year for the same game, and Deus Ex: Invisible War scored 5 stars from most reviewers, Bioshock deserves its 10/10. Not because its so amazing, but because every game that doesn't crash on start-up, has half decent visuals and a little menu polish scores 6/10 by default; review inflations. Its why GTAIV got 10/10, when it was an 8/10 at best.

Mass effects story is fairly good but fallout 3 NOPE
Mostly due to the massive plot hole of going in at the end when you have a Super mutant standing next to you, who is immune to radiation
Bioshock is well regarded due to the political and philosophical elements about rapture, I would by no way call the gameplay tedious, and I would like your opinion on mass effects gameplay as from my point of view, it is vastly more repetitive.

I didn't get into it. I got to the first Big Daddy fight and I died a couple of times and lost any interest I had in the game.

I would call it a major plot hole, not a story killer, and what about the other Fallouts?

It's all well and good that Bioshock has deep political elements but without fun gameplay I might as well read a book.

I enjoyed the Oddness of it, the atmosphere was good in the game and there was always a new item/enemy/tonic waiting for you right up till the end so you stay interested. :)

well..it was pretty nice. but if you ever played system shock 2, you probably will only have a tired smile left for the consolized, dumped down experience that is bioshock. don't get me wrong, it's still a very good game. not great perhaps, but very good. a lot deeper than what console players usually get served. pc players who remember the hayday of deep games know what i'm talking about though when i say that it's not as big a deal as it gets made out to be nowadays.

I bought it for the PS3. Waited for it to instal. Fell asleep while it did. And no, I'm not joking. Played for a bit. Only got excited fighting the doctor. Got to where the flower women got gassed and put it on my shelf never to play again.

Bioshock is good but not great. Bioshock's gameplay is good due to pretty much everything this guy said:

The gameplay was really great for the first few hours but it did get a bit repetitive during the middle sections. I basically did the freeze/shoot combo for most of the game. I wish the game would've had situations that forced you into changing up your tactics. Later in the game, I choose to start using the wrench and with all the right tonics stacked, the wrench was so overpowered.

I also thought the game lost some focus as well. It started out more horror oriented with the ghosts and all. But then there's a large gap where you come across no ghosts for quite some time and the game doesn't really attempt to scare you whatsoever. Also, the ghosts were never explained.

The game's environment and atmosphere was top-notch.

The story, if you think about
Fontaine's horrible and very unlikely to succeed plan to get Ryan
doesn't make much sense.
