Why is blood/gore considered offensive?

I was quite surprised today to find out that I had been put on probation because I posted a picture that contained gore (if you've seen Sweeney Todd, you'll know what I'm talking about).
"How odd.", I thought to myself.
I never really considered gore to be offensive (in movies or art, of course).
I'm not talking about pictures of a person who was disembowled or something like that in real life, because I'd consider that offensive to his/her relatives/friends and disrespectful towards the person in question.
In Belgium, nudity or gore aren't normally censored on tv, so I was never really offended by either of them.

I'd like to know what your views are on censorship of gore and violence.

P.S.: I respect the fact that I was put on probation. This is not a hate rant.

Trust me, people can become really sick from seeing gore. I know people who are, without a doubt, disgusted by it. They gag, and other nasty things from the mention of it. Some people can't handle it, and they aren't faking. Have you ever come across a person that can't see human blood, like if you have a cut or something? They probably aren't faking it.

I don't mind it, and don't really care either way about the censorship of gore. It doesn't affect me that much. But if enough people do have a problem with it, I don't care if it is censored. I also believe in my vision of common decency, which is that everything has a place, but things like gore, excessive violence, and even nudity are not generally appropriate for the public, in that they aren't extremely necessary to convey a certain idea.

It's largely because blood, ect. are associated with brutal violence, and brutal violence can have an inuring effect on young children.
Granted, I believe the age group affected by this is significantly smaller than most people think, but then, I can't really judge, being in the affected age group.

Me? It reminds me of a painful accident where I almost lost my thumb.
Yep, me too. Lost 1/3 of the nerves in my thumb. I guess it's just the fact the sight/concept of blood/gore makes some peoples' stomachs turn. Sure many of us are gamers around the escapist but it's impossible to say whether EVERYONE is okay with blood/gore. Better safe than sorry I suppose.

Because it's more obvious than what would constitute "offensive violence" as opposed to "non-ofensive violence", I guess.

My general assumption was that people don't like to see too much of the stuff because it's generally a bad sign when it starts to come out of people.
But, yeah, I was surprised too when I read the little blurb you wrote - I thought that article I, subsection VII of the Treatise on How People React to Things stated quite clearly that people who hang around sites like these are generally ambivalent about it.
Still, I don't know the context in which the image was placed; if it was in a discussion about farmville or something and you threw that in there, then, yeah, I could see how that would be taken offensively.

You've got to be joking. At my house, EVERYBODY loves John Carpenter's: The Thing. I really don't know what to say. Maybe we're just different.

As for why it's offensive, people generally don't like to be reminded that they're little more than squishy meat puppets. I know people who actually faint if they see the magic fluid that runs all their bells and whistles.

Gore and violence doesn't offend me, but I wouldn't put pictures or videos where my six-year-old could get a hold of them. And I wouldn't use such material in a setting or instance where it could be considered offensive.

I don't think it should be called "offensive". I mean, how can someone being injured offend someone? If they said, it makes people squeamish, I would understand, but not this.

Well, you could folow the probation link underneath this text.
Perhaps it's a little out of place, but the first thing I think about when I hear "old-fashioned razor blades" is Sweeney Todd.

It was a thread about using a straight razor to serve as a "fancy" alternative, which lead to the Sweeney Todd reference.
OT: not all people can handle gore and it can effect people badly.

That's why I've always wondered why anyone would trust someone to use a massive knife to cut something so small.

There's a difference between Gore and Gore.
Blood pouring out of a gunshot wound is one thing; someone trying to stuff their eyeballs back into their head via the hole so big it could encompass bandwidth that's now sticking out of their chest isn't.

What really gets me is people getting fussy over nudity when there's a lot worse to get fussed over.

People actually getting revolted by the sight of blood notwithstanding, I have a better question: Why is nudity considered more offensive than blood/gore?

That's a cultural thing. Nudity in the was is akin to sex and sex is more of a taboo than death.

If you can't stand blood or little bits of brain flying across the room, then don't watch, or don't play the game. The first 'gory' game I played was Soldier of Fortune(1st) wich was fun: shoot someone often enough and their entire body falls apart, bloodstains are left on the walls, etc. it was arguably on the same level as fallout 3. possible a bit higher. It was awesome. If you shot someone's head at the right angle, the top part of their skull flew off and you could see their brain.

So no, I don't mind gore, but it would be nice if games had a parental lock-thing (SoF had it) that allows you to set the severity of the gore.

Edit: I was planning on putting a picture of SoF here, but I remembered that I maybe shouldn't do that. so here's a link instead:
