Why is PS3 Last?

Don't jump to conclusions, I'm not a biased fanboy wanting his favourite system to come out on top in sales just to feel reassured about his purchase, I'm genuinely wondering. PS3 has free online gaming, a Blu-ray player as standard, and nobody can deny that it has some of the finest and most imaginative exclusive games in the bizz. Toss in neat features like 3D gaming, Move, and PSP and Vita connectivity, as well as the fact that it's competitively priced, and I'm just curious as to why people find what the 360 and Wii has to offer more desirable. Are the repercussions of Sony's botched launch still being felt even today, perhaps?

Well, the PS is only a bit behind the 360 (which had a year jump on it). Ps sitting at 62 million (as of dec.) and Xbox sitting at 65 million. It's currently 2nd in all other markets besides the US. (Japan isn't big on the Xbox, ps outselling it by 5 million units)

I think most of it has to do with the original launch price. Sony felt it big time and only recently (last couple/few years) started making a profit. The WII is cheap and 'casual' (for lack of a better term) friendly. The XBOX has a wide demographic, more people see it as for both 'casual'and 'hardcore' crowds.

I didn't buy the PS3 because I already had an X-Box 360, which launched much earlier. If the PS3 had launched first, I probably would have had that instead.

That said, I don't really find the two systems to be significantly different enough to justify (in retrospect) spending more money on the PS3 (assuming they both came out at the same time). I don't play much online multiplayer with consoles, so it's really not a selling point. I have no interest in handhelds, so handheld connectivity isn't a selling point. I have no interest in motion control gaming, so the Move isn't a selling point. I HATE 3D anything, so not a selling point. The Blu-Ray player, while nice, also isn't a selling point since most games aren't going to take advantage of that very much, and I'm not going to pay twice the price for a movie to get it on Blu-Ray so I can get a picture quality increase that I won't notice and DVD/Digital copies I don't want.... so no, not a selling point.

Additionally, I can't stand the Playstation controller. Maybe I have freak hands, I dunno, but Playstation controllers have always been super uncomfortable to me.

The exclusives are really the only selling point... and even then, I'm not interested in the majority of them.

I'm not calling it a bad system or anything... it's just not the right system for me.

Well, the way I look at it is there's the Wii and then there's the PS3/360. The Wii has exclusives you won't get anywhere else, whilst the 360 and PS3 share a fair number of titles and are roughly at the same hardware level (Compared to the Wii). People are more likely to get a Wii + 360 or a Wii + PS3 than a 360 + PS3. It probably helps that the Wii was cheapest too.

As for the free online, sure that's swell. The blu-ray? Well, I imagine the people that wanted blu-ray players mostly bought blu-ray players. And the Move has never really seemed that much different to the Wiimote to me (and I've seen very, very little advertising of it after the Christmas of it's release).

I'll quote myself:

Mainly price:

Original Prices for The Seventh Generation consoles:

Xbox 360:
-Core: $299.99
-Premium: $399.99
-Elite: $479.99
Wii:
-Original: $249.99

Playstation 3:
-20GB: $499.99
-60GB: $599.99

Notes: Prices in the Eurozone countries had a ratio of one US dollar = one euro. Prices in the UK were adjusted for the value of the GB pound sterling.

Also at issue was the lack of launch titles and brand loyalty being stacked against Sony: The Xbox 360 had a massive advantage, being released long before both the PS3 and the Wii. Since the Wii is not truly in competiton with the Xbox 360, yet the PS3 is, the PS3 suffered, while the Wii thrived in it's own space:

Release Dates for The Seventh Generation consoles:

Xbox 360:
-US & Canada: November 2005
-Europe and UK: December 2005
-Japan: December 2005
-Australia: March 2006

Wii:
-US & Canada: November 2006
-Europe and UK: December 2006
-Japan: December 2006
-Australia: December 2006

Playstation 3:
-US & Canada: November 2006
-Japan: November 2006
-Europe, UK, Australia, all other PAL: March 2007

Total Worldwide Sales for The Seventh Generation consoles:

Xbox 360: 66.0 Million consoles (as of January 2012)

Wii: 94.0 Million consoles (as of January 2012)

Playstation 3: 62.0 Million consoles (as of December 2011)

Total: 222.0 Million consoles (as of December 2011-January 2012)

The great hardware of the PS3 was what raised the price, and also what likely pushed the release dates back so long. Also factoring into the PS3's woes was the many problems befalling the PSN over it's lifespan, which may have deterred later sales.

I have all 3 and I only use the PS3 as a Netflix player. I don't use the Wii or the 360 for anything, my son uses the 360 for games and Netflx and the Wii, well it collects dust.

I will play Xenoblade Chronicles on the Wii, Tales of Graces on the PS3 and my son plays shooters on the 360. This gen I have become more of a handheld gamer though. The PSP/Vita connectivity thing is pretty worthless if you have a PC.

We'll I've owned a 360, PS3, and Wii and out of those 3 the PS3 was the only system I had issues with. I've never had my 360 or Wii break. But 2 of my 3 PS3's I've had, have had problems so bad I had to send them back. The only time I had a great time playing my PS3 was when I first bought one when they came out (the 80g version) or when I was watching a bluray. What really killed my love for the PS3 was when they came out with 2039849284093 different versions and some were backwards, some weren't, some were only ps1 backwards, it just got ridiculous. Also, when I took the 2nd PS3 I had that broke to gamestop for them to switch it out they gave me the wrong kind and I couldn't play any of my old games on it, when I went back the next day and told them they said I couldn't have my old one back. (i know that's more of an issue with game stop than sony but like I said I've never had to take my 360 or Wii back).
There are pretty good games out for PS3 now, but when I fight bought it there wasn't anything that really caught my attention. I ended up playing Persona 4 and Shadow of the Colossus on it till about 5 months in when I got my first PS3 game.

Also, all my friends own a 360 but only a few PS3 so that really impacts what system I get my multiplayer games on. IMO, no point in getting a game that looks better on a PS3 but have no one to play it with...

Isn't there simply a PS3 that plays PS2 games and one that doesn't? That's one revision, not 2039849284093. They all play PS1 games.

Did you know that there are also two Wii revisions, one doesn't play Gamecube games? The 360 never had complete backwards compatibility in the first place.

There was a fully backwards PS3, one that only played PS3, one that played PS3 and PS1 my issue with that like I said was more gamestop related, but why would any company release a system that played 3rd gen and 1st gen but not all 3?
I know the Wii made 2 systems but honestly I'm sure a lot more people had PS2 games they want to play on a PS3 than gamecube on a Wii (I have about 20ps2 and 8gc games)
Also, the 360 IS backwards compatable. I've play Fable and Jade Empire on there.

I Googled and I saw no PS3 model that couldn't play PS1 games. Also, doesn't the 360 require an update for each XBOX game in order to play them? If so, that's not what I would call backwards compatible.

I didn't say it wouldn't play ps1 games. The one they gave me at game stop to replace my fully backwards compatible one didn't play my PS2 games. I didn't find that out till the next day tho and when I went back they were like "uhhh well, you can't have your old one back that one we gave is good enough" LITERALLY what the guy said. But my problem as I said in the first post is I've never had my Wii break or either of my 2 360's red ring. But 2 of my 3 PS3's have broken. (apparently the 2nd one was caused by a design flaw involving glue dripping down on a graphics card or something, i don't remember but other ppl were having the same problem I was)

As for the 360 update thing...I don't remember if I had to update but if I didn't it wasn't a problem. I mean any game you put in the 360 after a while will go "do you want to download the update for this game" it's not really a huge deal. Takes less than a min to do it.

But I don't hate my PS3. It's just my least favorite console. I LOVE that I have something to watch a blu-ray on and my cousin like's to be able to play his PSP games on a TV screen when he comes over. But other than that I don't get much use out out of it. 99% of my multiplayer games are for the 360 cause a lot of my friends don't own a PS3. Now I did get the special boxset they released in Japan for ICO/Shadow of the Colossus and I'm glad the PS3 isn't region coded. It's not a bad system but in my book I'd give it a 6.5/10 (only reason Wii would be higher than PS3 is it has Monster Hunter Tri and Harvest Moon games lol)

Then what did this mean:

A PS3 that only plays PS3 games would not play PS1 games, right?

It doesn't matter if it's a problem for you. If you were to buy an old game on GOG, it would be updated to work on Windows 7 64 bit. However, if you were to put in the original cd or buy the game on Steam, it probably wouldn't work because it isn't backwards compatible.

The update from GOG didn't enable backwards compatibility, it changed the executable to make it compatible. That's not backwards compatibility. Backwards compatibility is when you can pop media in from another system/OS and have it work on a new system/OS without a patch. Think Gamecube games on the Wii.

It doesn't have full backwards compatibility though as not all original Xbox games work on 360.I have several Xbox games that don't work on my 360 because MS never bothered to release updates to make them compatible with the 360

OT:price. When I was buying a HD system I went for a 360 purely because the PS3 was way too expensive.People like me who had no brand loyalty were more likely to pick up a 360 because it was significantly cheaper.

Ah I wasn't aware it didn't play all games. Yeah I think price is the reason most of my friends went for 360 as well. I got my PS3 when they first came out and I remember it being about $700. Can't believe how cheap they are now compared to then lol.

3d gaming is a feature? To me it's a bug.
I recognize my bias towards 3D but it doesn't work with every game. I remember that in some games the FPS drops made some games unplayable.

Useless gimmick.

Sony convinced itself they could steal the Wii's market share. Yeah, right. Most of the people who want motion controls already got a Wii.

Also, it's implementation was awful. It sucked on SOCOM Special Forces (a dude on youtube found a way to fix it, though) and in that boxing game you need TWO sensors. Each move pack only brings a sensor and one "Nunchuck".

and PSP and Vita connectivity
Gimmicks. Not everyone has a PSP.

First: two of these features were not available at launch. The PS3 has had SixAxis since launch. But it seems you couldn't even remember it while writing the original post (don't worry, my friends with PS3s also forget it's there).

Second: you just scored an own goal. Basically you're pointing out that Sony likes to make castles in the clouds and they have become completely disconnected from reality.

This coming from a former Sony fanboy. I'm sorry but I couldn't support a brand that doesn't know what they're doing.

Why I bought a 360: the console was cheaper, and the games are also cheaper (55-60? instead of 70?). Nothing else.

My girlfriend has one, can't say anything actually BAD about it.

Several of my friends had unrepairable errors or whatever but those were Fats, not Slims.

Most people in Portugal do not know what a xbox is. In fact, Microsoft Portugal must be trying to keep it a secret. If you have a xbox, the first thing anyone asks you is "Is that a new PlayStation?" because they don't know anything else.

Yeah, I just said that the PS sells a lot here because we are stupid consumers. Come at me, bros.

Several reasons, mostly dating from the time the system released:

- The 360 released one year before the PS3.
- The 360 was much cheaper than the PS3 (at least originally, now the difference has narrowed down). Most of the difference was attributed to the blu-ray player, which was not matured as a technology and not widely adopted by the public. It even lead to the awful joke Kaz made about people having to have 2 jobs to be able to afford it.
- The 360 online service is perceived as better than the PS3, even considering the price difference...
- The 360 had a very strong line up of exclusives early on. By the time the PS3 launched, the 360 already had Halo 3 and Gears of War. The first exclusive worth noticing on the PS3 was Metal Gear Solid 4, released 2 years after the console. That, not even counting downloadable games, whose offer in the beginning was almost null.
- The acceptance of the 360 made some games that were usually considered Sony's exclusives (or at least, system sellers) to go multiplatform. Examples of these are Tekken, Final Fantasy and Grand Theft Auto.

Sony has improved the situation and eventually caught up, but it gave the competition several million units of advantage, and for several years the PS3 was the clear underdog.

Online might be free, but let be honest, it's pretty shit, you get what you pay for.

The XBOX also have more popular (and some may say better) exclusive titles, tbh I think that's the real deal breaker.
