Well Im depressed. Out of the forty-five people I know and study in my Highschool, only me and two more seem to regurlaly read books (I AM NOT EXAGERATING OR BEING SELF RIGHTOUSE!...IS THAT HOW YOU WRITE THAT!?) so...just throwing the thought up here, is it not cool anymore?

P.S: am I a nerd fofr liking comics, videogames and books over sports, going to a gym and lying about having sex to my other "macho amigos"?

It's righteous.
I like how you say "anymore", reading was never cool. :D
College is somewhat better mind, what with reading being somewhat of a pre-requisite.
Edit: Often in school I would have read my own book in the middle of class. Rebel I am!

You are a little bit, but nerdiness is more about attitude than activities.
And why lie about having sex? it just makes it worse when they find out you haven't. I don't do it

But reading's nothing bad, I know lots of people who read all sorts of things and they're still cool.

I'm very find of reading. And I know a fair few people who do it. But I don't think it has ever really been ''cool''. It's just a hobby, some find it ''un-cool'', and the rest either don't mind or enjoy it themselves, but I've never heard someone say it's ''cool''.

Also, people who think it's uncool, more often then not, are morons.

I love reading myself. Used to get beaten up for it.

See, people are jealous. They're pissed off that you're getting all this joy from books that they'll never get, so they take it out on you, and make you feel bad about it.

Don't feel bad! You're better then they'll ever be!
And people like this making avid readers all seem arrogant and patronizing.

What are you talking about? the book club at my school is 300 strong. Easily the largest club in the entire school.

I used to read alot, I don't really have the patience for it anymore which is a shame. I don't think reading is "uncool" but since I don't really use that terminology I wouldn't say its "cool" either. When I see someone reading a book on the bus I'm always interested to see what they're reading and often get involved in great conversations if I've read it too.

You're not a true nerd till you speak klingon either.

I don't think anyone even knows how to read anymore.*

For example, a girl in my (9th grade) American Government class was having trouble with the word 'insecticide'. The teacher had to say it for her.

Also, whenever someone reads out loud, they never enunciate correctly. It makes me sad.

the masses of people... are idiots. with ADD technology and resources today, its all fast. punch in and punch out.. currently reading "Romance Of The Three Kingdoms" VOL. 1. I just got past where Lu Bu and his adopted pappy fight over a woman. Some will argue that they can read on their new iFad thing. sure.. spend about 400+ bucks on a a thing and spend even more to download the books as oppose to sitting in at the borders or parish the thought of ever going to a library.
One other way too look at it is that reading is now for elitists and the rest of the world/society is screwed because the average teen these days has the language skills to still use LOLCat talk "omg i effing h8 u freaking n00b! I pwn u! fab fab fab fab lol rotflmaoyf!" this is the major downside to darwinism... unless natural selection takes place, its people like these we'll to communicate with, work with, and socialize with. we're all screwed.

Oh, well, I'm very sorry for appearing arrogant and patronizing when referring to people who beat up other people because they feel jealous.

Heaven knows I wouldn't want to offend them!

Poor delicate souls. You're right, I'm just being a big old meany.

/sarcasm.
You're presuming motivations for people, it's ridiculous. What makes you qualified to say what they're thinking?

People who judge others based on whether or not they read make reading seem less like something everyone can enjoy and creates an unnecessary us/them. They're as bad as music snobs who look down on everyone who doesn't listen to what they listen to.

Humans have become a more visual being than an imaginative one in my opinion. I still like reading, although I don't very often.

I don't remember a period when reading was cool.

People take enjoyment out of different things. Attention spans are dropping as of late, and reading requires a rather large one. You have a large attention span, so you can enjoy reading. Good for you!

I used to read quite a bit when I was younger, but now I just read occasionally.

I don't think they're jealous of the good time someone might get from reading. I think it's rather them trying to gain attention or express a misguided attempt at dominance and using violence or bullying as a means.

Straw-man argument.
Furburt isn't judging people who don't read, only those who beat up/ridicule people because they do read.
