why is she popular?

I've never heard any of her music, so I listened to "Tik Tok."

I thought it was alright. The synthesizers had sort of a retro video game sound.

And I actually like that she's not super perfect and attractive. She looks more like a normal person.

The one thing I do like about a lot of pop music videos is how bizarre they are. Stuff like Lady Gaga or this [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2ZCUtnuAXg8]. It's sort of interesting how all of the imagery, the rhythm, nearly everything appeals to sex or style in some way. That's why a lot of pop we see today is so popular, it's so sexual and bizarre. If you want to get people's attention, those are the two main things you need to do, make it sexual, make provocative, and make it bizarre.

And I'm not just talking about how attractive the singers are, but look at the video. The weird outfits appeals to fashion and fetishes, it sort of adds a cloud of mystery to the singer, which people tend to find sexy (that mysterious girl with a suggestive smirk on her face). The spiders, snakes and scorpians in the video kind of add that "sting" to the singer. The pink car, the pink outfits, the bright pink lipstick, the pink hair, the pink helmets, see a pattern here? The rhythm is sort of tribal like, the video has a sort of jungle theme to it, which a lot of people also find sexual. It's an artistic way of directing appealing to our sexuality.

Yes the BAND is good but the singer sounds like he has throat cancer mixed with shit.

Yet every **** loves them.

I really cant stand them
God yeah. The band itself I don't mind, but that arsehole's voice just pisses me off. It sounds like he's on the verge of tears everytime he sings. I just want to punch him and tell him to stop being such a whiny *****.

Same with Basshunter. I don't like them, but many of my close friends do, so I inevitably hear it. I hate those fuckers.
But you gotta admit, Russian Privyat is a great song
I'll admit most of their songs would be great if they had a different vocalist. Until they get a new one (which will probably be never), I will continue to hate.

Katy Perry's a terrible singer, BobDobolina. Have you ever heard her live?

I love all kinds of pop music, but not all pop musicians are talented (I'm not saying Ke$ha is either).

I feel a little bad for Ke$ha. She's one of those people who's so obviously going to be just chewed up and shat out from the lower intestine of the celebrity culture machine. If she's lucky she'll make a comeback on the club circuit a few years later doing something totally different, like reggae or country or something. (Fun fact: up until fairly recently, Vanilla Ice was still touring, fronting a metal band of all things.)

As for her appeal: blandly danceable, forgettable music that delivers just a teensy dash of inconsequential and non-threatening pseudo-rebellion. Trashily-cute but not intimidatingly hot; girls will be convinced that they can successfully emulate that look and that cool guys will like it.

Depressing fact: the much more talented Katy Perry has put out a song that sounds almost exactly, like note-for-note, identical to Ke$ha's "Tik Tok."

That video you linked was really, really freaky. Especially the second half. I wonder when it got modern to make them so freaky. I remember back when it was a rarity to make the weird in that way, and they were few and far between, at least in mainstream culture. Wasn't it Madonna or Missy Elliot or someone who made one with a lot of really weird people being kinda zombie-ish or something. Really freaked my out back in the day. Seems like Gwen Stefani started making it popular, and people just ran with it.

Back to the video you linked, holy cow Nicki Minaj has an epic "badonkadonk".

Edit: Missy Elliot also made that freaky one with all the crickets back before she lost some weight.

Also, excuse the ramblings of a tired guy.

Oh, I'm not saying Katy Perry's good. Just that she's more talented than Ke$ha. (No, I haven't heard her live, I'm just talking as a producer of studio product.)
*shrug*

They're both vocalists that rely heavily on Auto-Tune/Melodyne. The only difference is that Perry has better songwriters and producers.

Anyway, it seems like we're pretty like-minded. Why do you think so many of the users here are so outraged at people liking pop music? I find it fascinating (if a little cliche).

Katy Perry singing with an acoustic live: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BO0mPWgal-o

This is purported to be an unreleased demo from ages ago by Kesha: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RPWzYDnbkzc

The first one is pretty convincing. I think the real problem is poor management, sticking to formula by investors. I can't say I blame the companies, or the artists themselves. There's just not a lot of money in being an obscure folk singer.

What he said. Although I don't really like the BAND in KoL either.

Electro, Auto-tune and phat bass lines are in right now.

Mind you, not like I'm complaining I like the above but I do find her somewhat obnoxious.

So i'm not hating on kesha's music but what executive thought she was a talent worth signing. I was just watching television and one of her videos came on and it made me go WTF. She has no vocal talent and is not exceptionally attractive. Usually you would expect a music artist to have one of those qualities, so it leaves me to wonder why someone thought she was worth signing.
This may be an unnecessary rant but i hear her music all the time(at parties, on television, and at friends houses) and the frustration just built to a point where i felt like vocalizing my thoughts.

So anyone either refute my thoughts or maybe have some insight as to why she's popular?

Also any WTF music moments of your own?

I personally thought Kings of Leon sounded like a Coldplay ripoff.
You...what? Have you just never heard either of those bands play? Kings Of Leon make hillbilly-ish rock, Coldplay make somewhat mopey, artsy indie. They sound absolutely different!

And as for how the guy got signed, I'm pretty sure they're brothers, so you're not going to get the band without the singer. I actually quite like his voice, on some songs, but I've heard 'Sex On Fire' so many times now that it makes me want to punch my stereo.

"Artists" like Kesha are just record companies proving a point. They can drag any no talent hack off the street, feed em through autotune with a backbeat they paid some DJ 2 dollars for the rights to, and people will download that garbage for 99 cents a track. Then they use that money to sue the people sad enough to steal the garbage. It's like a 1 2 cockslap teabag when you turn on the radio. Luckily todays technology allows you to carry around hundreds of songs you actually like and never listen to this nonsense. Every generation has it's shitty music and unless 2020 has people Kesha Rolling on youtube, no one will remember who she is.

I still think she is better than Cheryl Cole. :/
Seconded. Why do people like her so much? She isn't even all that attractive. Hot, sure, but not as hot as people make out. I found that 'Fight For This Love' song hilarious though, since it was played a lot while the rumours of her divorce were spread around :-D

I don't think males are really the target audience for a lot of music in the top 40 music. It's why 90% of the escapist will hate on the top 40 because we're males

The other 10% are either women or males who like it (not exact figures). Mainly because teenagers and (in my history) girls are much easier to predict and satisfy with music
Accurate, generally speaking. 8-10 and adolescent girls are the main support of the blockbuster pop star business model the music industry is gradually moving away from. Stores like iTunes provide a long tail business model for older demographics who (naturally) specialize their taste into specific music. The state of the music industry is still confused and lurching to steady itself after the business pyramid got turned on it's head in 99 by Shawn Fanning.

He was thinking this "hmm, there is possible money in this. Her debut song is really catchy and there is nothing wrong with her appearance. However, we really need to ask what this guy aceverhart from the escapist messaging boards thinks before we sign her. As you all know he is the person that serves as our representative sample for American and possibly world-wide youth"

Only two-thirds of that statement was sarcasm!

seriously though, if a record company thinks someone will make them money they will sign a contract with them. It doesn't matter what your personal opinion of them is.
