Then why do you play a bass?

[sub][sub] Oh snap!!![/sub][/sub]

Anyway, usually because I get bored and I want to have my balls crushed by the game

Well often if you play on easy mode, and then later hard mode, it makes it HARDER than if you had originally played on hard cause you develop bad habits. Therefore I ALWAYS play on hard if i plan on playing the game online too, and since its almost a habit I play singleplayer only games on hard too. The first few levels are usually really hard, especially if you've never played a similar game, and after that you start getting used to it.

Many of the games I play nowadays I rent, so I play them on an easy setting to make sure I can finish the game and return it in time.
If I buy a game, I start out on normal difficulty and, if the game really tickles my fancy, I ramp up the difficulty to get more out of my game; the Devil May Cry games are a good example here: They're fun on an easy or medium setting, but don't require much finesse in playing... but try a difficult setting and you have to master your fighting styles if you want to get anywhere, which is great because deliberately pulling off certain giant combos is very rewarding in itself.

real men seek a challenge.
Eh, they're about the same level of difficulty really. If anything bass is easier.

OT:

Because overcoming difficult challenges is rewarding.

I think it's fun to play on hard. I know when it's not worth my sanity and I don't bother, but it gives me some pride to say I can beat something on a higher difficulty. I don't throw my controller or freak out, ever. I have that "aaawwwwwwwww" moment when I die seconds before I kill the boss that I've been stuck on but I never get mad at the game. I haven't gone back to IWBTG in a while though. I've been stuck at a single screen for a long while and I walked away for a bit. I'll go back later (maybe). At the moment, I'd rather conquer Ninja Gaiden 2 on hard so I can get on with Mass Effect.

I always play a game first on the default normal setting. I play Hard if I want a challenge, but this is if I think Normal is too easy or have already beaten it on Normal.

I play first person shooters on the hardest difficulty. I feel it is the proper way to play them.

RTSs I generally play on medium difficulty. It seems like the proper way to play them.

RPGs I leave at whatever the default is.

I don't know why I have different completion standards for different genres, but the reason I play on the hardest on FPSs has to do with my older brother referring to all other modes as "pussy mode" throughout my early development as a gamer.
I'm the same way. The reason I never crank up the difficulties in RPGs (by which I mean games like Fallout, Planescape, and Morrowind, not Mass Effect) is because quite simply: they take too damn long. In a shooter, you know that you can overcome every situation the game throws at you if you'ree good enough, and I like to see if I am. In an RPG, harder levels tend to just turn into level and stat grinding. It's not a challenge; it's manual labor.

Beating something that is kicking you're ass is the most rewarding experience you can get in games.

For a Challenge, thus making the eventual Victory turn into "Victory!" or even "VICTORY!"

Plus getting your Back end Handed to you over and over again by the Insanely difficult boss makes finally returning the favor all the sweeter, and all the more fun.

So pretty much because it adds to the fun

Well I usually play through on normal or easy the first time and then harder difficulties if I play a second time. A challenge is nice sometimes and it usually give the game a bit of a different style, so all your play-throughs don't end up exactly the same

Cranking up a game to hard makes the game feel that much more complete when you reach the end. Plus, you are justified to punch the air and go "yessss!"

I love going through an RPG on the hardest difficulty - good mix of conversation and being murderised by enemies.

I play on hard to challange myself.

Bragging rights too. If you're into that sort of melarky
Yup, same. I just finished GOW3 on normal and it wasn't that hard so I'm playing through it on hard and it's pretty challenging now. And again bragging rights, it's nice to be able to say you can beat X amount of games on a high difficulty level, and usually there are achievements/trophies to make it all the sweeter. But if it's too challenging then I'm happy to give up, like OP says I'm not going to sacrifice my own enjoyment for the sake of bragging rights

I'll admit it. For me its just for achievements, otherwise I would never play any games on hard, ever. I like feeling like a badass in games.

remember years ago my roommate and I playing Halo2 on Legendary. I think we spent 3 hours on the first mission (was our first real time playing FPS, we were both RTS guys) We were so frustrated but we had so much fun. We got really disappointed when the rest of the game was a cake walk compared to the ass kicking that first level gave us.

I try to find the difficoulty that gives enough challenge, but doesnt' piss me off.
If i can run through a game ony dying a few times, it just feels too easy, if i die a few times in every otehr fight it's too annoying.
Unfortunetely, it's pretty much guesswork, cause i just choose a difficoulty when i start the game, and i rarely play through it again, and i can't really figure out if it's too ahrd untill i'm far enouigh into it to not want to start over. Cause maybe it just takes some time to learn how to not suck at it, or maybe it gets harder as it progresses.

I've hardly ever cared to play a game on very very über hard diufficoulty, cause i know it's gonna bemore of a stubbornish kind of challenge than fun challenge, and i play for the fun og it.

Playing KH1 on hard mode.

The bosses could usually two or three shot you. Your allies were as powerful as a wet feather and you weren't much better.

I remember fighting Malificent almost twenty times WITH grinding and barely surviving the match when i did win.

But god DAMN did i feel good when i took the ***** down. Just that feeling of taking down such a powerful enemy. It feels good.

I don't usually play FPS games on hard mode simply because i suck at FPS games and normal mode is usually pretty hard for me.

Action and action oriented RPGs i will almost always go back and play hard mode. Normal the first time for the story then hard mode for the challenge.

Of course, i never touch easy mode. Easy is always well... easy. I want at least the feeling i need to try to get through the encounters.

When I play a shooter I'm there to kill shit, so I play on easy. But when I play puzzle games like portal I like it to be really hard, but not frustrating. Differance being learning the solution and doing it. In portal the puzzles make me think, in braid they test my reflexes more than anything

Bragging rights, achievements/trophies, unlockables....etc

Some games can be ridiculous on their hardest mode, people told me gears of war (both) and uncharted (both) would be, but with a cover system, it becomes obvious what your limits are and how you can manipulate them and the ai towards your advantage.

Playing GoW3 on the hardest mode is proving more challenging and daunting than I previously thought, I hate that frickin' scorpion! (also, fun whacky thing I found out, if you shoot Poseidon's princess or whatever as she's running through the gates passed the two golems, if you fire your bow at her, she'll stop, and you can pass through the gates and not fight the golems, neat huh?)
