I wonder why there was no vehicles in fallout 3 .
I think it would have been great to have vehicles as that would lessen dependence on
fast travail

Yeah but that would have required to much extra effort on bethseda's part. When i first started i would go up to every broken down car i could find to see if had something like activate and drive.

The main reason is because it wouldn't add anything to the game. The map is too small and cluttered to allow vehicle use.

If you want to, there are mods that add in vehicles like cars, motorcycles and so on. My favorite vehicle mod is one that adds in a levitating chair armed with a chaingun. Fun as hell to run down Enclave troopers with a chair.

I don't think the Oblivion engine likes vehicles.
May I point to horses? They work fine, but the geography of Fallout 3 isn't too suited to vehicles. Rather than a huge open wasteland, we now have a demolished urban environment for a large amount of the game. There's simply too much rubble and such for it to be useful.

Plus you already have fast travel, and the game is pretty small anyway.

because you can fast travel anywehre, and the map was too clustered to make them viable.

Sorry to break the flow of the thread, but was I the only one who found it odd that you could drive a fully working car across the wastes in Fallout 2?

God no.
Cars wouldn't work in Fallout.
Not to mention, how would you keep it with you?

Although I'd like a rideable Giant Ant, Penny Arcade style.

If there were cars, you would be crashing into something every second basically. On top of that, you would have to pay to keep it in good condition (after being shot a lot), find the parts for it, and pay for gasoline as well.

Tl;dr it wouldn't work very well.

I like to stroll about the map at a leisurely pace, going nowhere in particular. Good thing I have Animal Friend 1.

As you may imagine, I've gained most of my XP from strolling leisurely into groups of Raiders, but the point is that if there were vehicles I wouldn't use them anyway.

relalistically because it has been two hundred years since any cars have been running, and that and no one would know how to drive the car seeing as anyone, except maybe ghouls would know how to start the thing, and that's only if they left the key in the ignition. and it would be hard to find gasoline.

Because it's over a hundred years after the nuclear war. Any vehicle around even in remotely working order would have either been repurposed, scavenged or hauled away by some of the major factions.

Which happened.

The major factions are also the only ones with the resources to maintain such vehicles over extended periods of time. No-one knows how to drive one anymore; the few remaining manuals would have similarly been repurposed or hauled away by the major factions.

Add to that the fact that vehicles would have drastically reduced the apparent emptiness and perceived danger-level all around you: You could have just quickly zoomed from one part to the other without having to worry about supermutants, rad-monsters etc. Most people would also have forgotten everything about actually exploring the surrounding, instead preferring to just grab the car/bike/vertibird/whatever and go from A to B the fast (and boring) route.
