Wii Fit Helps MLB Pitcher Lose Weight

San Diego Padres [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heath_Bell], showed up to training camp this weekend 25 pounds lighter than he was a year ago. Who does he thank? Wii Fit.

Baseball players have never been known as the most svelte of professional athletes. They just sort of sit around waiting to bat, or stand around waiting to make a catch, or, if you're a relief pitcher, just sit around the bullpen waiting to get called in or just waiting around period. So it's no surprise to learn that a baseball player of all pro sportsmen would report having some pretty spectacular results with Nintendo's Wii Fit.

San Diego Padres pitcher Heath Bell, who, being a closer, never plays more than a couple of innings per game if at any, decided to spend his offseason playing the videogames with his kids. Apparently he completely embraced the cliche gamer lifestyle of sedentary gaming and Cheeto munching, because he suddenly found he'd ballooned to 270 pounds. His wake up call, however, didn't come until he stepped on the Balance Board, took a good hard look at his Mii, and received a good-natured scolding from Wii Fit.

"It said I was obese," Bell told The Philadelphia Inquirer [http://www.philly.com/inquirer/sports/20090216_Baseball_Notes__A-Rod_apologizes_for_calling_SI_story__baloney_.html]. "If you're obese, it makes [your Mii] obese. I was disappointed that I was that big. I literally took the game to heart. I did the work but I kind of credit the Wii Fit."

Bell trimmed off 25 pounds and showed up for training camp a lean mean pitching machine. As a testimonial for Wii Fit, though, we should take this with a grain of salt. Maybe Bell "did the work" the old-fashioned way by going to the gym and working out. For all we know all "the Wii Fit" (as Bell calls it) did was tell him he's fat and make him realize he needed to do something about himself. Wii Fit? More like Wii Guilt Trip.

If you don't state your sources, I don't think people will just believe you because you use three exclamation marks.

Isn't it a pretty well-established fact that physical exercise makes you lose weight? Wheter you do that by going to a gym, play WiiFit or by simply cycing to your work. Of course it is debatable if, in this particular case, WiiFit was the sole reason he lost his weight, but since playing WiiFit is a form of exercise it does have some effect.

Wii Fit doesn't work.

Poor attempt to get some money off a "celebrity".
Define work. He already said it mostly just motivated him by making him look fat, not actually giving him exercises.

I still enjoy the thing for stretching out my bum knee (ski injury from years ago) and stretching my back out. It's ridiculous for anyone to claim the thing is going to make you lose weight, but it does call you fat and get you working on improving your health as a result.

Yeah, did any of you even read the post? He worked out at a traditional gym. Wii fit just told him he was fat.

Wii Fit isn't an exercise machine, but if you're obese you can definitely lose some weight from it. Even if you're not, all that Yoga and the push-ups and stuff. 25 pounds in a year from Wii Fit? That's believable.

You can lose 25 pounds in a year if you walk for 30 minutes extra every day. Or cut off fried foods from your diet. Or do all three and lose a lot more. 2 pounds a month is easy.

So he's a pro ball player, but he takes it to heart when a Nintendo product calls him obese?

I would say that Nintendo invented Wii Fit for just this sort of person.

Ugh. See, it's things like this that remind me just how bad we need Seanbaby to come out of retirement.

IIRC the methodology was disputed and different studies have different findings so currently that's about as certain as videogames causing violent crime.

All you people who say Wii Fit doesn't work are completely wrong. YOU don't work. Let's face it, if you played Wii Fit, and actually did the workouts properly, you'd most likely gain some physical benefit from it.

If I was to purchase some well established exercise program and completely mis-use it, then it wouldn't really be the program that's at fault, it'd be the user.

This. After all "it's a poor craftsman who blames his tools"

I think half the people here
A) Didn't read the article because
B) they don't want to ever admit Wii Fit was good for anything, ever.

I used to be pretty obese and started putting on a lot of weight especially on my thighs and bottom in my late thirties. I started exercising as often as possible and also cut down on a lot of high calorie stuff. Unfortunately I hardly managed to lose much weight at all. I then recently read an article by a lady who claimed that she managed to lose nearly half of her weight using a particular weight loss supplement. I tried it out and it actually worked quite well. Within 4 months I managed to lose about 65 pounds. The results were pretty amazing and I feel so much healthier and energetic now. You can read more about the lady's article at
