Wii Predicted to Outsell PS3 and Xbox 360 This Christmas

Michael Pachter said that Nintendo is in good shape this holiday season and that Wii and DS sales would beat out its competitors again.

The financial analyst Michael Pachter would like you to think that he has his finger on pulse of the videogame industry. And this time, his finger is feeling the fact that Nintendo is looking at another successful holiday season because of evergreen titles like Mario Kart Wii and Super Mario Bros Wii as well as new releases like Kirby Epic Yarn and Donkey Kong Country Returns. Couple that with the recently announced Super Mario Bros. 25th Anniversary hardware bundle [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/104592-Red-Wii-and-DS-Bundles-Hop-on-North-America] and suddenly the Wii is looking like it may beat out Microsoft and Sony yet again despite its current drop in sales.

"I don't think that Nintendo's holiday season is in trouble at all," Pachter said. "The Wii has dropped from first to third, but the new models for Xbox 360 and the launch of PS3 Move had something to do with that, and it's likely only temporary. I think that Mr. Iwata is right when he says that the Wii is more of a holiday purchase, as the core audience has long been satisfied, and the more casual audience comprises the much larger portion of the addressable market.

"With effective marketing, a slew of great games, and some likely support at retail, I expect the Wii to once again become the best selling console in November and December."

Pachter did say that not everything is peachy for Nintendo, as DS sales are falling due to competition from Apple's handhelds and the impending release of the 3DS. "The DS remains challenged by the iPod Touch, and the new XL and regular DSi models haven't really captured anyone's imagination," he said. "Also, the impending launch of the 3DS has to have some continuing impact on sales of the existing DS models, but I'm quite certain that once the 3DS launches, handheld sales will rebound nicely."

Personally, I'm holding off on buying a handheld until the 3DS comes out and I think that a lot of other gamers are thinking the same thing. I'm not so sure that there are other people out there who just haven't bought a Wii yet and are thinking of doing so this year.

On the other hand, kids grow up all the time and perhaps parents are more inclined to buy a Wii to play with their 5 year old when last year it was just too early in the kid's development. Who can say?

Apparently, Micheal Pachter can.

Oh god. Not Pachter again.

Granted, this one is probably accurate, but his predictions are so often insanely stupid I cringe every time I see his name attached to anything.

Damn, that Pachter sure likes to furiously analyse the crap out of everything, it'd be nicer if he was more of a comedian because he wants to be in the gaming news constantly, we need a good laugh or a pantomime villain to make it more enjoyable for us.

Although I'm not surprised at this, I'm sure I've got aunts that want one, and no doubt my nephews have broken there's so I'll have to purchase one for them too.

Yeah at least Jack Thompson was good for a laugh.

Normally, I woulda thought this is a no brainer that the wii would outsell all the consoles, since it's been doing so during xmas for years. Except for one simple fact, and you just stated it.

5 years old is probably still too early for any sort of console gaming IMO (or any sort of electronic media outside of maybe a daily episode of Sesame Street). 6 or 7 at the earliest would be my recommendation and with limitations on intake there.

I predict that if it doesn't, then we will see Nintendo announce the "Wii 2" early next year.
I predict that if it does, we will see them announce the "Wii 2" a bit later on next year.

The 'Wii Fever' that struck in 2007-2008 has long since abated.

Current trends suggest that the majority of the market that wants a Wii already has one.

That means anyone looking to purchase a console now is most likely looking at buying a replacement for a broken console or an additional, different console (this is far more likely).

If Nintendo does beat out its competition this season (which it might), it will be due to price, and it won't be by that large of a margin.

For once, Pachter could be right. The Wii currently has a good stream of holiday titles that could prove to be big-sellers (Wii Party, Donkey Kong Country Returns, and maybe Disney Epic Mickey), and then there's the 25th Anniversary Mario Wii, which will help give them slightly more of a boost.

The only thing I'm curious about is why Pachter is suddenly predicting something positive for Nintendo. Usually, he's the guy who keeps saying that Nintendo needs to put out a WiiHD to survive and predicting disappointing sales for all the upcoming games.

This guy gets it about 50/50, but considering this is Nintendo we're talking about, he is probably right.

Also, he forgot GoldenEye 007. You want a console mover? Thats one right there.

That's what I'm thinking: Everyone who wanted a Wii likely already has one and I don't see many people buying multiple Wiis for different rooms in their homes like more traditional platforms or even handhelds.

I also don't see the iPhone as being an actual gaming platform but can you blame me for not taking a phone seriously?

I'm waiting on the 3DS and am unlikely to import due to fears of region locks (and lack of steady work anyway) Also, about people who wanted the Wii already having one? I think that will apply to Natal and Move selling slowly but, that's another article.

I'd like to see a scoreboard like the one made about Obama's campaign promises(can't find it. sorry), just to see how much he actually gets right.

It's true. Working in Toys R Us in the games section this past week I've been taking note.

Sold about 20 Wiis.
30 DSi/XL
1 PS3
0 360s

so unless Kinect manages to swing people onto it (gave up on PS3. Does it actually HAVE any games coming out for it in the next 2 months? Everything noteworthy seemed to be put back to January.) I can't see the 360 doing much better.

That isn't gonna happen, a 40 year old plummer can only keep a GROWING child's attention for only so long until they start playing shooter or RPGs
