Wii U Powerful Enough For CryEngine 3

Crytek's new game engine runs fine on the Wii U, but they still won't be making any games for it.

Current industry estimates are putting the Wii U slightly ahead of Microsoft and Sony's current-gen consoles in terms of hardware. Crytek CEO, Cevat Yerli, has confirmed the console is powerful enough for CryEngine 3 - there's at least one game already in development that's using it - but then went on to imply that Crytek won't be developing any games for the new platform regardless.

"My opinion of the Wii U is very high," he told CVG. "It's just that we didn't have a business case unfortunately that justifies us making a game for it.

"It doesn't mean that CryEngine 3 doesn't run on Wii U - it actually runs beautifully. In fact, there actually is a game in development from a respected developer that we will be announcing. I've seen the game running and it looks really great."

A Crytek rep has previously stated that it's unlikely that Crysis 3, which will be the last traditional retail game produced by the studio before it switches over to a free-to-play model, will make an appearance on the Wii U.

"From my perspective I do not understand the public's concerns that the Wii U is weaker than PS3 and 360," Yerli continued. "That I cannot see. From my perspective the Wii U is minimum as powerful as Xbox 360."

The Wii U is set to launch this holiday season.

Well that's kind of odd.

And who says the WiiU is weaker than the PS3 and 360? I've never heard anything of the sort.

I thought it was kind of assumed that it'd be more powerful by logic, though its interesting to hear it can run the CryEngine 3 so well.

Its hard to take any console seriously when its called the Wii-U though. Just reminds me of Wei Ling from Kung Pow:

Well that's just super! Nintendo managed to make a console that's "At least as powerful" as a console made over half a decade ago. Woohoo! Welcome to 2006 fellas!

I really won't be surprised if, when the next gen systems get in full swing, the Wii-U ends up continuing Nintendo's trend of having under powered hardware and terrible third party support. I also won't be surprised to see that the army of soccer moms and other such casuals that bought the Wii in stupid amounts largely ignore the Wii U.

It is two generations of graphics hardware ahead of the current generation so there are no surprises there. I would imagine Crytek are worried it wont be picked up by their current audience at this stage. Things could always change.

I honesty don't care what some CEO says. They could quite as easily adapt the engine for lower hardware specs. What gets me is to why Nintendo hasn't released the full specs yet? What are they hiding?

From my perspective the Wii U is minimum as powerful as Xbox 360.
Wait, what? Is this a hint? The xbox360 is something like a 7900GTX and seeing as the WiiU is going be an M series (mobile, less powerful) are we talking about the G8xxx/9xxxs?

Good news that the hardware has been given props by a company like Crytek, shame Crysis 3 won't be released on the system, but that's not a huge loss. Still waiting for a chance to pre-order my Wii-U though.

Dammit, I wish people would stop saying they won't make games for a system, I hope the Wii-U does IMMENSELY well! So when they start wanting to make games for it, they will look like idiots.
Ummm, Crytek isn't making games for any consoles in the coming years. And they are praising the WiiU hardware, including that a new game from another developer is already using CryEngine3 on the WiiU beautifully... I don't see the problem here.

Might I ask why they are not making games for consoles in the coming years?

You don't start a sentence with And *Grammar Nazi*
They're plannin some sort of switch to a complete FtP model which wouldn't work at all on consoles.

Its a big gamble if they actually do stick with their idea of of AAA style games that are FtP.

The thing i don't get is how nintendo have said they want to attract the hardcore players with the Wii U but they won't because while it's as powerful as the current gen consoles, the next gen consoles which are soon to come will just put it back down considering the new xbox is meant to be 6 times more powerful than the 360, i really can't blame Crytek for not bothering with the Wii U.

The only future i see for Wii U is that it will play this years and nexts (maybe another year after that) AAA games then most if not all support will be dropped by the third parties as the other next gen consoles will be out meaning they can make more complex games, then Nintendo is back to the original Wii styles games.

A lot of people use it as an argument saying WiiU isn't a "Next gen" console. The reality is the console has at least double the RAM. The rest hasn't been confirmed.

But the wii u is probably 4/5 times as powerfull as the 360.
