So By nintendos logic, I already have several devices to play mario games on so are they going to take out that part of the system

How will this negatively affect us? (and please don't slap a low content post ban on me, I'm asking a question)
As long as you have another way of playing blu ray or dvds not at all.

Pretty damn stupid but his reasoning makes perfect sense, plus he's kind of admitting that the Wii-U is late to the scene with this as well.

OK, seriously, how is this a bad thing?

First off, like they said, your typical household already has enough means of viewing DVDs. Have a sound system? Most of them function as a DVD player, don't they? You've got a computer, otherwise you wouldn't be reading this. And hell, most small/portable TVs nowadays come with a DVD Player on the side.

Also, for the people who want to "experience" their DVDs AND games on a ginormic screen with stunning surround-sound...don't most TVs have like three or four input ports now? I know most of the TVs in my household are over 10 years old, but all of them can support at least three different peripheral devices. Is it really that hard to have your game system in one port, your dvd/surround sound in another, and switch between them?

For all the people who cry out "gimmick" when they see Nintendo's consoles, I have to say the downloading/storing/viewing of ANY form of media other than video games on a video game console, to me, is the very epitome of "gimmick." Why do you need to listen to music or view pictures on your game console when an 8GB MP3 player is like $20? The PS3 may be a "cheap" Blu-Ray player, but by that very respect, how popular has Blu-Ray gotten, and how popular would it really be if it didn't hang on PS3's existence so dearly?

I'll stop before I go into full-blown rant here, but suffice it to say I got my point across. The WiiU doesn't need to be a DVD player, and if never having that functionality means I save $30-50 off the finished product, then I say to hell with it.

Awesome. Already have a DVD player, so there's no point in paying more for the Wii U to have another built in.

I think the people complaining would probably complain about anything nintendo said. A DVD player probably would not be worth the extra cost since I allready have so many, and for those complainging OmGZZZ now I have to switch mmy system if I want to watch movies. Thats the equvilent of pressing a button on your remote and switching from video 2 to video 3

To me it suggests that they're already anticipating that the Wii U will not be many people's primary system, since it can't necessarily fulfill all potential needs.

This sounds familiar, less features and storage as possible, no dvd playback just because. Nintendo please do something that surprises everyone for once.

So far my only surprise is they came up with a worse name than Wii.

Anyone else here saw Kung Pow? Remember the weird girl who kept saying the new Nintendo system name? "Chosen one!!! WiiU WiiU WiiU!"
Even that is at least better than a name literally sounds like PISS.
Yeeeeeah I get what they're trying but I don't think they thought it out much. I mean Pac-Man had a lot more thought behind it. Originally it was called Puck-Man, but they knew in arcades it would be vandalized and could easily be read as Fuck-Man if done.

But Nintendo are content with naming their device after someones junk or urine or apparently what a crazy woman in a comedy re-dubbed movie was yelling over and over.

On the plus side, this makes the system price lower, correct?

But on the downside, even the fucking PS2 could play DVDs.

DOES THIS MEAN THE WIIU WILL USE...CARTRIDGES?
Well..the pictures of the console shows a CD slot..for Wii games...and a cartridge slot under?..idk really, looks like it is.

Could ofc just be the slot to the plugs for standard classic controller ;)
Probably like on the Wii. SD card and gamecube controller plugs.

Whoa! Idea! Since it has a touchscreen, why can't we play DS games on the controller? I'd love that. Also, why not N64 as well?

This doesn't surprise me, it even seems sensible, but I'm surprised they keep revealing bad aspects of the console and havent confirmed HD graphics or if it's more powerful than xbox/ps3 etc details which would add to hype/comfort stockholders.
They have confirmed all those things, repeatedly. The WiiU will support up to 1080p resolutions, as stated on practically every gaming website, and both AMD and IBM have confirmed that the respective GPU and CPU units they're providing are custom made for the WiiU and will be significantly higher-spec than 360/PS3 tech.
Ok I missed that, I thought they were still rumours so my bad. However, they still haven't revealed some details. From Eurogamer:
"However, the released data gives away very little about the performance of the console, omitting any kind of detail on the graphics chip utilised and the make-up of the IBM CPU. Other important information - such as the resolution of the 6.2-inch 16:9 touchscreen are also omitted from the PDF contained in Nintendo's official press pack."

OT: The WiiU isn't living up to the hype already. The screen isnt multitouch, the gameplay displayed was xbox/ps3 based at E3 and now no DVD enabled. I'm guessing they won't support gamecube either which is a shame.

Well, damn, now my only two options are to spend $40 on a new DVD player or use one of the 3 I already own.

Why are video game nerds the snootiest people on the planet?

Besides, physical media is so 2007.
Seriously.

Come on guys. Physical discs are going out fast. It would be stupid for Nintendo to hike up the price to squeeze in a DVD or Blue ray player at this stage. Especially when you probably have one already anyway.

Now, if it still doesn't have a hard drive, that will be a problem.

I don't see a problem with them removing DVD playback, I agree with them that practically anything that'll accept a disc will play a DVD and we don't really NEED this function (whether we want it or not).

I have a problem with what this represents; they are already giving reasons for shortcomings in a console they haven't even brought out yet. They're already saying sorry for something when they haven't even sold one unit.

I waiting for the day they try and you know sell this thing on it's perceived good points and not keep saying sorry for its perceived bad points.
