They are correct, I own a PS3, yet have never used it as a DVD or Blu-Ray player.

Reaction here if Nintendo said it would run DVD or Blu-Ray: "Oh Nintendo... now you're jacking the price up with pointless stuff games consoles don't even need."

Truly, Nintendo can't win with you people. It's getting pathetic how much bitching and moaning happens here about anything Nintendo does.

Yes because it will play HD-DVDs! If it keeps the price down, they can use whatever they want on the system. I just dont know what media form they will use. (I hope its easier to keep track of then my postage stamp sized DS games though).

How about you go for the one thing people will be asking for...the ability to play some of their older Nintendo games on your hardware?

Or is that just madness talking...

We don't need DVD or Blu-Ray players here people. You're already in close proximity to a device that can play DVDs just fine. It's called your computer.

Also that parrot video in the trailer seemed to look an awful lot like Youtube and I can only assume Netflix will be on it as well so there's really nothing to complain about here.

Big deal, Nintendo hasn't been at the top of the technology charts for years, that's not why their things sell.

Sony owned the Blu-Ray format so it made sense for their consoles to support it.
Look at it the other way - would Sony have included Blu-Ray if Nintendo owned it? Doubtful.
If Nintendo had included Blu-Ray, they'd have to pay money to Sony - their rival - every time a console or game was bought - and it would make everything far more expensive.

You wanted a hardcore gaming console - you've got one :D
Sony does not own the Blu-ray format they just have a large market share in it. Just like Microsoft didn't own the HD-DVD format.

That's...highly inconvenient. Maybe it's just me, but I rather appreciate that the roomie's Xbox can double as a DvD player when we're traveling.

Well I guess I understand but they still should have included it.
WHY?

To me it suggests that they're already anticipating that the Wii U will not be many people's primary system, since it can't necessarily fulfill all potential needs.
Or MAYBE, JUST MAYBE, it's because they realize that all of the hardcore gamers they want to win back already own consoles and/or computers that play DVDs... not to mention the fact that anybody in the market for a gaming console probably already has SOMETHING that can play DVDs... sounds like you're just one of those haters who's gonna hate

Nintendo are cheaping out on an aspect of their next console? Who'd a thunk?
You're right. Clearly, they need to make a console that can do EVERYTHING, and then laucnh it at $600. That's a winning business strategy.

Pretty much correct about that. Sony is one of the members of the Blu-ray association that developed and own the technology. HD-DVD was pretty much owned and developed exclusively by Toshiba.

Anyway to weigh in on this. I have never used a console to play DVDs, ever! And I have had several in my living room at various times that could. I just found they weren't as easy to navigate as my dedicated media players so I never bothered. I also think that the days of people being excited that their console is also a DVD or Blu-ray player have died down. Sony's PS2 was the device that made its money on that (I had two friends who owned PS2 but never played a single game on them - they were just used for DVD players because they were a cheap option, the PS3 is not a cheap option for a Blu-ray player).

I forgot said:
Not having a DVD function is hardly what I call "no longer able to compete based on the quality of their product".I buy a games system to play games. And how will gaming be better if they go Sega?
Not having a DVD player is just drop in the bucket when it comes to Nintendo these days. Both of their current systems, the Wii and the 3DS, both rely on some form of gimmick to get them over rather than being a quality product that can compete on it's own merit. The Wii relies on horrible motion controls and the 3DS relies on equally horrible "3D" technology. Furthermore, it looks like the WiiU is following right in their footsteps. Nintendo is FAR more interested in the bells and whistles they've all but abandoned the core elements in favor of meaningless gimmicks.

As for how would gaming benefit from Nintendo abandoning the hardware market and becoming just another game developer for proper systems? First off it would allow them to focus on what they are good at. Nintendo games typically are high quality despite being horribly redundant. They would do well developing games for Sony and Microsoft.

Secondly they would cease to continue to embarrass themselves with shoddy hardware offerings. Outside of a couple of decent portable consoles Nintendo has released nothing but a solid stream of shit when it comes to hardware. They are simply unwilling or unable to compete without some sort of gimmick to get their consoles noticed. Honestly, the Wii only got over because of motion controls. However, they tried to catch lightning in a bottle a second time with the 3DS and that is in the process of going downhill quickly. I believe the WiiU will ultimately suffer a similar fate.

That actually seems like a fair reason. Blu-Ray is Sony's, so that's fair. Since, just at a cursory glance, five things in my living room already attached to my TV play DVDs, so I don't need that many more DVD players. There's also the fact that Nintendo has said they're going to be 25GB discs for the game. We wanted a hardcore gaming platform, and Nintendo seems like they're going to deliver.

Adding a bluray player is everything?

It is however pretty necessary for the next generation of consoles.

With games being as large as they are at the minute. imagine how big they're going to be in 6 years time. What are they going to do, put them on 7 disks?

It won't survive the next cycle as a heavy player. Unless it's just going to go the same way as the wii.
I wasn't specifically looking at blu-ray as 'everything,' just making a hyperbolic statement . Not including the ability to play DVDs isn't 'cheaping out,' though.

Also, if Nintendo's new disks do store 25 GB, I'm not really sure that disk space is going to be a problem... at least, all of my pc games indicate otherwise...

Having a Blu-Ray player is not necessary for the next generation of consoles. God forbid people get up and change the disc once every 7 hours of gameplay. Only the pickiest gamers would choose one system over another because of how many discs a game takes in order to play and it's a terribly petty thing to do in my opinion.

And Nintendo's using custom discs for their console so no one (besides Nintendo and certain developers) know how much space is on them. It will probably be at least more spacious than Microsoft's discs and hopefully on par if not more spacious than the PS3's.
